My adventures of the past week

Hi everyone, You have all been in my thoughts the past week, even if I have been gone!

I was able to take my parents camping last week, as we had temps in the 70's and beautiful weather. It went great. The kids came out Wed. and had a good time, DH, DB, dsil, dn came out Wed & Thurs evening along with some friends. It was great! And very good for my parents. Then I drove the coach to Walmart to restock (all by myself!)and came home to reload water and DH and I took of to western OH to watch trains. That went great, too, until I woke up on the 4th to sun poisoning. I go to the dr tomorrow. NOT FUN! I was started on new arthritis meds 3 weeks ago, that said to watch the sun. I used spf50 sun screen and stayed in the shade. It wasn't enough, so now I am stuck in the house, red, welted, tired, and sometimes slighty nauseaus.

I will be catching up with what you have been up to!

Sounds like a great time! Sorry to hear about the sun poisoning, though. I hope the doctor can help.

Thank you everyone. So the truth be told: that butterfly wouldn't sit in a spot lighting it properly, always shaded on one side, so I set my focus on the plant and just kept snapping, hoping to catch him in the right light. I got lucky on this one! Darren

I am having so much fun growing roses, I never liked gardening at all until I started with the roses last spring and now it is nice to see the rewards from all of that hard work! jaceysgranny -- thanks! I am really enjoying monkey business, I mainly bought it because I thought my kids would get a kick out of the name and I was intrigued by the "licorice" scent that was mentioned when I bought it (although I haven't really noticed it yet) Sara-Ann -- if I were to only have one striped one it would be Rock n Roll, I am just so impressed with the blooms and the rich colors. Give it a try and I think you'll love it too! Ingrid -- thank you for the compliments! RCT is great, I believe it was introduced in Europe under another name. My Julio bush is not that big but it sure likes to bloom! Lesley -- thank you :) Tammy -- Thanks!! I wonder what is up with your Grimaldi? Did you say it was still in a pot? Mine went straight into the ground from RU and it has loved it. I didn't get many blooms last year (a handful) but maybe it appreciated the Michigan winter? It did have a significant amount of die back but has bounced right back. I just noticed a huge basal cane coming up this morning so I am excited! My Raspberry C.T. is also from Edmunds and I cannot believe the growth on that one -- the most of all the roses I planted -- I'd say give it a lot of space if you can! Jeannie -- thank you! I think you'll love Raspberry Cream Twirl if you give it a chance. I got mine from Edmunds and it has been such a strong grower. Carol -- thanks, I love those stripey roses! My Paradise has no scent either but I love the blooms, they are shapely and seem to last quite a while on the bush without losing form. I bought a 3rd Paradise this year since my two from last year were such strong bloomer. I have one in a not so sunny location and it does surprisingly well so maybe it appreciates a little shade. How is yours with sun?

Suggest to your mom to point a light toward the plant, to try to get it to bloom. It's difficult to light these huge plants properly though, just because they are so big. Maybe a T5 bulb of appropriate length, suspended vertically - because that is a way to light up the most of the leaves. It's an absolutely gorgeous specimen plant, by the way! > The fertilizer I used said it was okay to use a stronger dose, bi-weekly. Though the more I think about it, consistency might be better. Use 1/2 or even 1/4 the label dose though. They want to sell you lots of fertilizer, so they generally mention the highest dose the plant can take, which is not optimal - especially if your cultural conditions (light, water, temps etc.) are not absolutely perfect, which indoors they generally aren't. > I've been considering repotting it, actually. It is common advice to create a well draining potting medium. Well, you gotta be careful with conventional wisdom. If conventional wisdom says one thing, but my eyes tell me another, I am going to be open-minded and attentive to what others are doing, but at the end of the day, I am probably going to trust my eyes and my experience, and what the plant is telling me. Your plant is growing - which is my answer to any sort of criticism of your setup (including the criticisms I came up with myself, as you noticed!) Yeah, or replace it with fluorescent if it seems like there's not enough light. > I've created a box to cover my plants at night. This might be overkill, but I think it might be a good idea. Yeah, I think it's an overkill. A few other house plants (not hoyas) absolutely require a (totally) dark uninterrupted period of a minimal number of hours for blooming, but I do not think I've ever read any requirement like that for hoyas. Not for H. carnosa anyway. > I've decided that when summer rolls around, I will place my carnosa outside. Yes, a good idea. I do not have outside space, but people say it's a whole different ball game - their plants go on all sorts of amazing growth spurts, mostly unimaginable to indoor-only growers.

Regal is aptly named. Tuxedo cats are always so good looking, and he is no exception....I like the colors on All Revved Up too. Your 2 pictures of it reminds me again, why bud counts are important. I have a daylily that went through a good 1/2 dozen blooms early this spring before finally settling down and producing what I bought it for. ..........I also like Linda Sierra and Sherry Candy. Thanks. It was a good trip, too bad I had to make DH come home a day early! He's been great. I'm still not very hungry, but most of the rash is gone. I will stay out of the sun as much as possible for a while, tho! We'll see what the drs say on Wed & Thurs. Be very very careful if you get new meds!

I've had sun poisoning and it's no fun. So take care of yourself and do what you're told.

Hi Tami

I found, wearing a sun protection shirt works better for me than sunblock.

As I am in the sun a lot while riding my bike, I wear a long sleeve top every third day. No sun allergy since.

Hope you won't have to avoid the sun all together.

Tami, any chance it was the new meds instead of sun poisoning? It sounds like you had a good week, though. And you get a medal for bravery for taking that big RV to Wal-Mart--and alone, too!

Moni, I will keep the shirt in mind. I don't usually have a problem with sun burn, let alone sun poisoning. I have enough Native American in me that I usually just tan. I go to the dr tomorrow.

Patti, I am pretty sure the new meds is what caused it. I have driven the rv by myself several times lately, but this was the first in that type of a parking lot! I even emptied the holding tanks with my dad supervising! I had to help him do his, as he can't bend over and breath at the same time to do his own. Then he helped me. I am learning that I can do a lot driving that monster! I was talking to a truck driver this weekend about it, and he told me it sounded to him like I wasn't afraid of it anymore. I told him that when I told him I had driven it around Washington, DC alone, then he could tell me I wasn't afraid of it anymore! I want to learn to drive it well enough to take DD and Damien to Colonial Williamsburg in it, without DH having to go to do the driving. If 4 of us go, we have to drive another vehicle, as we can't fit 4 of us in his little pickup that we tow. DD and Damien are skinny enough that we can fit the three of us in it and still be able to shift gears, but can't do more than that, no back seat!

I found just enough energy to cook dinner and ate better than I have since Sunday morning, so I think I am on the mend. Most of the rash is gone, just mostly red. I don't know how much the doc will be able to tell by tomorrow, but I am going anyway.

I'm glad to hear that you had a nice time. I love that you took your parents along with you!

Did I read that right? You drove the mobile home to the store?? You are much more brave than I am. I have a hard enough time driving our little car. :)

I'm sorry to hear that you got so burned even after taking all the extra precautions. :( Hope your feeling better soon!

Heather, Yes, you read that right! I drove that thing all the way to Wapakaneta Memorial day weekend and back alone, then again to the state park near Wellington (both in Ohio)last week. Mom & Dad have thier own motor home, but their health isn't good, so the only way they can go is if someone else goes too. My SIL's mother & stepfather had one like ours, just traded it for a class c, and she rides on the bed watching movies the whole trip & refuses to learn to drive it. He got sick once, and they had to stay in a campground for a week because she won't drive it. He wasn't so sick that he couldn't ride, just to sick to drive. If any thing serious ever happens to him while on the road, she'll call my DB and fly him to where ever they are to drive it back. NOT ME! I WILL learn to drive it, and everything else that goes with it. I might not like it, but I WILL learn! I went to the store on the way home!

Well, I went to the dr. I have a script for a steroid in case there is a next time, but I apparently did every thing right, as most of it is gone. I see the arthritis doc tomorrow and see what he says about the meds.

As to sun screen, check Web MD as they just did some articles on them They claim up to 25 is all people need. Anything else is a waste of money. Also it depends on the brand. I wish you the best.
