Hi, everyone! I'm Kathleen and I am posting on this forum for the first time. I got in touch with this sight through JoAnn. Are most of the posts about recipes, gardening, etc? I would love to join the chat! Thanks!

You could ask these nice people: http://www.bovees.com/ Who are the US authorities on vireyas, apparently, However I would also try some Australian gardening forums if you can find them; specifically ones for people in Caires, Darwin and other truely tropical parts. The collusion between Commonwealth culture and tropical climate could well mean they are particularly inclined to growing such plants if they exist; even in mild, oceanic Sydney the vireyas are used as garden subjects so I think, overall, they probably have more expertise with them as a country than anyone in the US. Or even a Florida gardening forum though I suppose it's only Miami and south where conditions are similar to yours. Obviously the various standard southern indicas and southern native Azaleas grow around northern to central Florida but I don't know what their southern limit is. Sorry on the zone thing...farmland south of San Antonio, Tx is our location. Thanks for trying to help and responding so quickly. Tis not cold here...quite the opposite. I've tried sun, half-day sun, semi-shade over the past month (each method about 7-10 days at a time) with no improvement where ever I put them. I think am correctly watering (moist not soaked) and fine-mist spray my fuchsias each morn as it is very dry here. Fertilize once every 7-10 days. This is very frustrating. Should I cut it back hard, bring inside, and hope? Only the top 1/3 of each stem/branch has leaves and blooms and this "strange leaf problem" is continuing to progress upwards to the remaining leaves. :-( On another topic, I recently purchased "diatomaceous earth-organic grade" (dust form) and "beneficial nematodes" (spray into soil form) to help control fleas, June bugs, and other nuisance pests from my yard. When I get ready to use these products, are my fuchsias safe? Can I dust/spray them with these?

Thank you Lulabelle, I will check out the square foot gardening forum. I have discovered that most of my questions on how to set up my garden is the result of wanting two different styles of gardens :) I really need to have a big vegetable garden that I can easily access. This is ideally for corn, potatoes, pumpkins, melons, beans, tomatoes, etc. We have a short growing season, but it's really warm, so it's important to grow as much as possible in the three to four months available. On the other hand, I love the idea of a more romantic garden, with some vegetables, but also lots of flowers, herbs, fruit, etc. I think your garden captures that style perfectly. I've decided to keep the majority of the vegetables in a "kitchen" or vegetable garden with some edible flowers and a few herbs, but fairly utilitarian. However, I want to use a smaller child-friendly potager garden to grow some fun miniature vegetables, lettuces and spinach, strawberries, some herbs and flowers. This would be the garden my nieces and nephews can "help" me with. I saw a cute idea for a children's garden, using fairy tales. The example they used was planting some pole beans on a narrow, four foot bean teepee, putting a house at the bottom, a "Jack" figure on the beanstalk and a larger "Giant" figure on the top. Welcome, CampinKid Kathleen, thanks for joining the KT. We do talk a lot about food and gardening, but you'll see we talk about just about anything. (Except politics and religion.) ;-) Join in anytime and please do as often as you can. We need fresh ideas and points of view sometimes. Makes it more interesting.

I've met JoAnn in real life and she's so sweet. She makes a mean red velvet cupcake, too.

Hi kathleen A big welcome from hte middle of South Dakeota. I don't drink coffee but would share a cup of Hot tea. I don't drink Ice tea either. Yes we talk about just about anything here. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

I didn't know what it was for the longest time and just didn't check it out. Now I check it all the time. There are great photographers here and they post beautiful, amazing pictures and then others of us post just ordinary photos. Join in! Pam

Welcome....love the name Camp Kid (and Kathleen). I am one of those RV campers, but this summer I am camped 'at home' and enjoying the weather and abundance of Raspberries here in Southern Oregon. Wish I could give you a bowl.
