I've never seen one before, but my birthstone is opal. I love them and sure wish I could wear jewelry. I like the length of your chain--just right.

I've loved opal since they were popular when I was a teen. Our daughter was born in October so we bought her a ring when she was sixteen. I've never heard of a "floating opal" though. It's very pretty.

My father bought me a pair of earrings and a necklace to match. They were blue floating opals. I wear them to this day. He has been dead over 33 years. I love them and wearing them reminds me of the great dad I had.

I always wanted a floating opal, since opal is my birthstone..but never got one. If I remember right..they stopped making them because they tended to "burst" in really hot weather. I'm sure they've come up with a new better way of making them, with maybe something othe than glass!

They were popular when I was a kid. I was going steady and my BF bought me one but we broke up. When we got back together , he tried to buy me another but they were sold out. He got me a rhinestone one instead. I always wanted one.

Wearing an opal stone next to your skin is good for the opal. Skin moisture and oils help to keep the opal conditioned. Some opals are not stable and can loose water content over time which causes them to loose luster and become susceptable to fracture. If you do not wear your opal, its a good idea to soak it in water about twice a year. However, if the opal is proven stable, the water soak may not be necessary. Do not use mineral bearing water as it may stain the stone.

The ring is a darling piece, but a bad idea. Opal is a soft stone, about 5 on the Mohs hardness scale. It can be scratched by a hard pocket knife blade. About the only sucessful opal ring stone is a doublet or triplet. A doublet has a hard crown cemented on top of the stone; a triplet has a hard crown and a backing. Triplets usually are made with thin pieces of opal, and is percieved by some as way to make the stone appear more than it is. This is true in come cases, but a good triplet can enhance its appearance and protect the top.

I do not recommend using 100% opal as a ring stone. Opals are fine for necklaces, ear rings, medalions, etc. A good opal has no rival for beauty.

I love opals-the fiery ones! My parents gave me an opal and diamond ring when I graduated from high school. How I loved that ring! I wore it on my right hand for years. Then I put it away in my jewelry box. Wore it only on special occasions. I checked it every few years. Then one day when my kids were small it went missing. I knew it had been only in the jewelry box. I figured a babysitter must have gone snooping and took it. I felt so bad and I never told my Mom. Then one day about a year ago I was cleaning out a closet, saw a box on the floor and started going through it. My ring! I was so happy!

My opal ring is over 45 years old and still holding it's beauty as when I first received it.

Why do you think a big ring spells divorcee? I have a friend that wears big rings. She's been married for almost 40yrs and has grandkids!!

No need to yell,Glenda! I was just trying to understand why wearing it would spell divorce! So, you don't wear a ring on your ring finger on the left hand. Seems to me that would spell "Divorced" "Widowed" or "Old Maid"!*S*

A lot of married people don't even wear wedding rings.
