Our first official trip to the grocery store...

We are going to go grocery shopping today. I haven't done this yet with all three of them so it should be fun.

Boy I hope fun is the right word! :0)

Last night I got on the computer and found little grocery cart cliparts and printed them out. I made two little carts, laminated them and glued the bottom and sides leaving the top open. Last night Tanna, Trace and I sat on the trampoline and made a grocery list. Trace isn't much help but she had fun. Tanna and I went through the sales adds and she pointed out items that looked good either for meals or for snacks. I cut out the items and we put them in her grocery cart so today at the store she can help me shop. She is so excited. She picked things like grapes, porkchops, orange juice and then fun snack things.

I have found string cheese and strawberries are her favorites so those are on her list too.

After grocery shopping we are going to the park to have lunch.

Most of the grocery stores around here carry P. edulis. A lot depends on the variety that you have but most are easy to start from seed and the fresher the better. You can clean the seed prior to planting or plant it with the aril still on (but remove the juice). Barely cover the seed with potting mix and keep it warm. You can cover the pot to hold in humidity but remove the cover when it germinates. If it is an edulis you can probably grow it outside in the ground. It might die back during the winter but will grow when it warms up. Since there's loads of seed in each fruit try some inground and keep some in a container with protection. They might need cross pollination to set fruit and hand pollination might be necessary. If it's edulis I think the purple variety is self pollinating but not the yellow variety. Most like full sun and don't want wet feet. Make sure they are in well draining soil. They are average feeders and I honestly feed my passies infrequently. Potassium increases flower production. I dig a bit of chopped banana peels into the soil around my plants. I don't remember where I heard about doing that but the plants seem to like it. You might want to check out the passiflora forum.

Rosewitch, England was definitely one of my favorite places I have ever visited. My folks took me there when I was 14, and I remember bits and pieces the Crown jewels, walking amongst the Stonehenge stones (roped off now, vandalism), Stratford upon Avon. Time for me to take my own 14YO. Im trying to think how I can get over there for a whole summer, LOL. Dlynn, I could have worked so much more. I didnt really look at night time stuff and there was loads to do. Greece: cant help you, but shoot Yasou a line, she went a few years ago. LOL Annie! Teresa, well go together. It has changed.check out the new atrium. I couldnt keep up with DH and DS16. Afternoons, when I planned museums, I crashed. Next time! Pam, lots of people did more than we did per day! Theater every night, more attractions, I cant imagine. Gina heh heh yeah I need another vacation like a hole in my head. Speaking of whichDH has another week off in August. Nooooooooo! Kathleen, DH says he took an average of 200 pictures a day. Yup. I still had lots of food in the house, but DH told me to go ahead and stock up since he'll probably be on the road for 5-6 weeks this time and the immediate future of our para-transit sytem is iffy at best right now due to budget cuts. (We won't know its fate until March 19. On the 22nd, we'll either have it or it's immediately gone.) So, hey, I'm no dummy. I stocked up. Trader Joes - greek yogurt eggs Cheddar cheese bacon almonds frozen haibut frozen green beans frozen mixed veggies frozen mixed peppers frozen naan butter canned diced tomatos quinoa mustard Regular Grocery Store bread Tortillas raisins black beans lentils canned tuna (my lucky day - albacore at .79 a can!) 5# chicken breasts (on sale at .99 a pound!) 2# pork bag of baking potaotes 2 cucumbers 3 onions 2 gree peppers # asparagas quart strawberries 1/2 gal milk canned mixed fruit # bananas # mushrooms garlic limes flour olive oil freezer bags pinto beans # coffee 2 boxes tea bags On the clearance shelf, we found organic pommegranate juice, V8, cherry juice and peanuts for $1.00 eash. The store isn't going to carry them anymore. So we got two each of those. And I had coupons for two free bottles of laundry soap that expire at the end of the month, so I got those now. Total - too much. OTOH, I'm set for another 4-5 weeks except highly perishable items like lettuce or milk. (Althogh I have some canned milk if I really need it.) That doesn't include the things we get for DH to take on the road as I consider his road supplies separate from my grocery budget.

Fevers in kids are really scary. They'll go from zero to 60 in the space of half and hour. Their body controls don't fully develop until around age 10. Back in the dark ages my pediatrician said teething does not cause fever. However, they are cranky and run down and more susceptable to picking up illness, especially from older siblings. Wait until school starts and the older ones bring home every germ known to man. The youngest will be far sicker than the others. The bronchial tubes become full-sized also around age 10. Before that croup is not uncommon, simply because it is tougher for them to cough and clear their lungs on their own. Just please don't go old school and rub her down with alcohol. A sudden, quick change in temp is just as bad as the fever.

I absolutely LOVE hearing your updates and stories. This is so exciting and heartwarming to me. What a blessing this has been for all of you.

Sounds like you are adjusting really well from going to no children to three. There is so much for you to experience, you're going to love it. Savor it all, it goes SO fast.

I wish you lived closer, I have toys and clothes I would love to give you.

just remind the girls you're ONLY buying what's on the list...kids in stores can get you so distracted...does your store have a check-out that doesn't have candy? try for that one...

we started going to the store as a family, and would hand out coupons for the older 2 to find and get...(those were the days when you didn't panic if they were out of your sight, sigh) it really made for a fast shopping trip, without the "i wants"...

the picnic during the summer became a favorite, and often on the spur of the moment...we'd make sandwiches and drive out to point loma (san diego) and up where the the navy had these real-live seals penned. we think they were trained to find objects...anyway it was an awesome location, and one i'll always remember...

That is kind of how my kids learned to add very well. They knew that if I had extra money left at the end of shopping they'd get a treat. So we'd have peanut butter on the list say, and they'd decide do we want the expensive one or the cheaper one. Sometimes the answer was expensive for taste, other times they'd get the cheaper, see what I'd planned to spend on the item (yes the budget was so tight that I knew prices even), and if we saved enough...treat!

DD#1 has the rule, if you beg for it, you will NOT get it. If you're good in the store you can pick out a treat. This is great, until they beg for a Plum (DS did this), how do you say no to plums? Non-junk food was my only exception.

Thank you for the update....yup, your a natural. I would never had thought of doing what you are doing. It sounds like the eating issue of the oldest girl hopefully will sonn be an non-issue. Good going, Firemans wife, and lets not forget that hunky fireman of yours. He must be quite a man, to so lovingly take on three kids at once. you two are my heros.

I am a long time lurker but had to come out of hiding to tell you how much your story has impacted me. I couldn't even tell my grown sons about it without crying. It just warms my heart so much that these children have found such loving parents -- and that you have 3 little blessings that will change your life forever. I too wish we all lived closer so that we could be there to support you in person but we'll have to be content to do it here. I know you are busy but please keep us up-dated when you can. We love hearing from you. Keep up the good work Mom! You're doing great!

ok...fun is fun...but it's been like a whole 24 hours and we still haven't seen pictures of your little darlings!

I hope the grocery store and park were a fun outing for you!! I know their having a blast and I can feel it in your writing that you are over the top...it's sooo wonderful!

Gosh. I don't remember the back story of why you don't have bio kids but whatever the reason we now all know why. The plan for these 3 little ones was already in place. They were meant to have the best mommy and daddy in the world. You and your DH.

As to pictures being requested I am not sure that is a good idea given the circumstances. Perhaps Firemanswife would prefer to keep things safe and private for the little ones.
I know I would.
