First Trip To A Penzey's Store

I had to go with my husband to Madison, WI for his 5 year out check on his transplanted heart and had a lot of time on my hands. I'd seen a Penzey store half way between the hotel and the hospital other times when we were there, but never went to it. Well, this time I did. Went with a list of spices I wanted off their online catalog which would have run around $30. Came out with $78 worth of spices. Went back the next day and bought a container of their Arizona Dreaming.

Also found out they have a store here in Indiana, probably 50 or 60 miles from me. Life will never be the same.

Also checked out the Wisconsin Cutlery and Cooking Supplies store a few doors down from Penzey's. Found some of those little tart pans with the removable bottem that I'd been wanting.

All in all, the trip was a wonderful sucess. DH's heart and arteries are perfect with no rejection and I got to add a bunch of spices and the little pans that I've heard about on here to my pantry.

bcskye, good for your husband, may he have a long and healthy life ahead.

I love Penzey's, I just walk around and sniff things and I always buy more than I think I'm going to. I love to just smell their almond extract, I think I could wear that like perfume!

OK, so bake something yummy in those pans and post pictures, I want to see them!

bcskye, congrats to your husband, that is wonderful! Good haul for you too!

My DH needs to buy some special tires for his car. Seems if doesn't get them he'll be needing a heart transplant! LOL

Anyhow, he has to go to Buffalo to get them and being the good wife I am, I'm going along with him. Nothing to do with the fact there happens to be a Penzey's very close to the tire shop... ;)

Cinnamon, smoked paprika, chipolte powder and nutmeg are on my short list but I have 5 days to make the long list!

BAFrancy & Bubbam, Good grief!!...I wish you two could come to ND to our store!! We've had Cabinet-Coat for YEARS! We're an ACE store. MOST ACE stores can get CC, but some may be Gun-shy if they've never had it. Minimum order is 2 gallons. * On a similiar note, ACE just came out with their version of CC, called "ACE Cabinet, Door & Trim" paint. * The big win with the ACE is that it's 50-State VOC-legal right out of the gate. * Both CC & the ACE clean up with soap & water. * The ACE is tintable to 98% of the normal ACE colors, although there's no "Red or Yellow-Base" in this new line. * Both have Alkyd & Latex resins..."Hybrids" if you will! >>> Myself & others have posted lots about CC & the new ACE version on this forum. >>> I grinned pretty wide when you referenced the BIN primer comment!! We sell a lot of BIN, to novice AND Pros! >>> 123 IS a good primer on wood. Kinda smelly for a Latex, but a very good primer. * I wouldn't use Oil anywhere on your cabs. bayareafrancy - as has been written here quite often, you sometimes don't get the best advice at paint stores. Trust the guys on this forum who paint for a living. I did stress using a dry brush with the waterborne. I learned this was best when once when I went to paint, the brush I wanted to use wasn't completely dry from a previous washing but I went ahead and used it. The paint really gummed up on me fast. Since then I use only a bone dry brush. It is true that the waterborne paint gums up on the brush fast, sometimes as quickly as 30 minutes. Then you start to leave brush strokes. When that happens to me, I just start with a clean, dry brush. I have a working rotation of about 8 brushes in various sizes and shapes so I can always find a dry one. Chinex brushes work well, but are hard to find around where I live. I ordered mine online at "thepaintstore.com". I got Coronas. You'll be happy with the Impervo. I use the SW equivalent - ProClassic. I wished I had taken the time to practice on some scrap lumber before I started using the ProClassic. I painted a few six paneled doors (vertical) with trim before I started to get the hang of it. But when I got the sags and drips, I just sanded them out when the paint was dry and lightly touched them up and you can't even see the mistake. If you can, practice first, esp. if you're doing vertical surfaces. If you're doing horizontal surfaces, you will have instant results.

You won't need a tape measure in your purse, though--you'll probably come home with half a dozen paper tape measures in various pockets :) Yes, textiles of all kinds--pillowcases, rugs, curtains...Some Ikea draperies are used in very upscale houses I've seen in magazines... Also bathroom accessories--several lines of them. Office accessories. Storage of every conceivable kind. Hey, you know what--go to the Ikea website and get a preliminary look! Then at least you'll have some destinations in mind for after the AS-IS room :)

sarschlos_remodeler and twoyur - Jungle Jim's is an oddity of a grocery store/market in OH. It is seriously one of the weirdest grocery experiences. But, the selection is AMAZING. It's like a bunch of ethnic grocery stores under one roof. Stuff from Hungary, Norway, Japan, China, India, the list goes on and on. It's even got rare fresh produce that I have never seen in some of the best grocery stores. It also has some random displays - example: the exterior of the bathrooms look like port-o-lets, there is an 8 foot bear (I think) that is animated and dressed up and sings elvis songs. There's a giant swinging Campbells Soup can with arms, legs, eyes, etc. Weird but neat.

Good news about your husband's ticker!

I am ashamed to say there is a Penzey's about half an hour from here and I have never gone. I don't use much in the way of spice, so I just stick to what's in the grocery store. Anyway I can't afford another vice at the moment.

May I just say...there are worse vices than adding a little spice to one's life! I call the drawer with all my Penzey's stuff my ''secret ingredients''.

bcskye, That's wonderful about your hubby check-up. I hope he has many, many years with that new heart.

Where is the Penzey's store in Indiana? I go to the Farmers Market in South Bend and there is a booth there that sells it. I was just afraid that it might be old. They sell many other things too.

Congratulations on a great trip for both of you!

I've never been to a Penzey's. DD and I go to Birmingham for Mother's Day and our birthdays every year. We leave the kids with her husband and stay 2-4 days (We figure he can't take any more than that). Every time we go we plan to go to Penzey's and haven't made it yet. Always so much shopping and so little time. I'm probably better off as I have numerous racks of herbs and spices as it is. Better off financially that is. ; )

I perked up when I saw you were at the Madison Penzeys, as I was hoping you'd also visited WI Cutlery and Vom Fass, both in the same shopping center. The Century House gift shop, directly across the street, is also good, and I also would have recommended a trip to Orange Tree and Trader Joes (if you don't have one where you live).

Glad to hear his ticker is doing well.

Thanks everyone for your congrats. Yes, one of the transplant team ladies told my DH he was amazing and he truly is. He outlived the time they gave him on 5 by-passes, then when he had another massive heart attack that should have killed him and they told him there was nothing more they could do for him, he kept himself alive long enough to get a doctor to put him on the transplant list and another year and a half to get the transplant. I like to feed him healthy meals and spices can and do have a great place in them.

Lakemayor, the Penzey's in Indiana is on 82nd Street, north of Indianapolis. Its got to be in the Castleton area.

Jazmynsmon, I wish I had known to visit Vom Fass, The Century House gift shop and well as taking a trip to Orange Tree and Trader Joes. Haven't checked to see if there is a Trader Joes in Indiana, but if there is, I'm sure its many miles from where I live. It had been two years since the last time I got to go with DH to Madison, but I'm beginning to feel like its a place we should move to. By the way, Brennans is a must go to place whenever I'm up there, too.
