I love everything, you background color, the hair, the husky and cat, the colors; very intriguing is the 'lack' of eyes....usually the eyes make a painting. Yours stand alone without it. How very interesting.

Thanks...this is my favorite painting to make. I re-created it to sell and hopefully it will. The only difference I did was I made the wolf's eyes black. I will take a picture of it this weekend and post it on Monday.

My brother had the book back in the 70's and asked an artist friend of mine to paint it. He has the original in his basement.

My brother had the book in the 70's. He commissioned his painting in 1979. I did my copy of it in 1985.

Did you check with the artist first about selling recreations of her original artwork? I would think that copying it with intent to sell could get you into legal hotwater, SK.

Long time lurker here and had to register today just to ask Karen if you ever do any of your own designs? All I have ever seen you post is things that you have copied from someone else.
Someone, somewhere spent a lot of time creating the designs that you copy and paint.
Something is just not right about that. Don't you feel the least bit guilty taking a design someone worked very hard on and making it your own. And you want to sell these designs.
I think they are not yours to sell.
You might want to rethink your 'artwork' One of these days someone is liable to slap you with a copyright infringement lawsuit. You have posted your copies many times here so it would not be hard for some attorney to prove this was an ongoing thing with you.
Show us what YOU can do, not what someone else can.

I'm an artist, both of my parents were artists and grandparents on both sides were artists. The very first lesson I learned from my mother growing up was to never copy someone's work.

You can use others art and ideas inspire you, give you a spring board for your art, but bring your own ideas and talents into whatever you create.

Art is not only about how well you are at executing a technique (i.e., your talents as a painter, sculptor, singer, actor, whatever) you need to bring something new to the table.

I must confess that I waited to see what other folks wrote before I posted (I know, I'm a wuss, but I've been accused of being too "prickly" before). Changing something when you copy someone's work does not make it your own. It just means that you're adept at plagiarizing. I recall other posts regarding this same subject and you defended your right to call your art your own because you had changed one small part of the original artist's work. Now here we are again and it's really pi$$ing me off that you still see nothing wrong with what you're doing. I can only hope that you (finally) get the message and heed the advice that's being given. If not, maybe if you get jammed up in a lawsuit you'll finally see the light.

Disclaimer: My dad was a working and well-known artist and he also taught Art History/Fine Art at numerous universities over the years. He would bristle when a subject like this would come up, and he would be the first person to tell you where he stood. If all else failed and you still didn't heed his very sage advice, he would take whatever legal steps were necessary to protect his work and his reputation.

Just as a follow up....I have contacted the publishing company regarding this and have asked permission about recreating this. If i am not allowed to do this then the painting I did will go in my basement. This is a unique task since the author died several years ago, the book is out of print and I don't know the artists name.

As for my other designs.. I am contacting the web pages where I found the photos and asking for permission as well..

Karen- Let me know what happens with the artist permission. I think this would make a very cool cross stitch design. I would not sell it, just want to do it for myself. I love the colors!

I would not begin to try to sell if I just plain copied it.

I agree, I have gotten ideas from other work, but the end result is my own.

This looks like you have one of those machines that light it up on a larger piece of paper and you trace it.

You may have a real talent of your own...and since you like doing things like this...give it a try.

There is no talent in tracing the work of someone else.
And to then try to sell it as your own is just plain wrong.
Karen maybe the time you spend copying others could be better spent developing your own talent.
Wouldn't it be much more rewarding selling something you actually created yourself.

I was referring to her attempt to contact the artist, not that I am thanking her for her attempt to copy another's work and profit from it. I figure it this way: once Karen does the "homework" and realizes just what she's up against, and how serious plagiarizing is and how preposterous her thinking someone will actually agree to it is, maybe the lightbulb will go off (hopefully?).
