We have a four-or five-inch thick memory foam topper on our bed. It's four years old and still great. Made a big difference in my sleeping comfort. It was about $100 for a king-size topper then, but I don't know the brand name. Got it from Overstock.

It takes both of us to turn and flip it every few months.

I have an inch of memory foam on top of my mattress, and that is topped with an inch of latex. I bought both toppers at Overstock--$39.99 each.

If I ever have to do it over again, I'd probably eliminate the memory foam and add more latex. Memory foam retains heat (which is how the "memory" works), and even with the latex on top of it it holds too much heat for me in summer. In winter it's a more pleasant feature.

By the way, memory foam mattresses are not made entirely of memory foam. They consist of a number of inches (anywhere from 3" up) of memory foam on top of another foam. It is usually the quality of that other foam that determines how well the mattress will hold up.

After going through a rapid succession of mattresses a few years ago, I learned that a good approach is to buy a decent quality firm mattress (ideally from a small manufacturer) and top it with something soft. This solves the problem of providing back support while cushioning tender shoulders and hips. I finally got it right, and I love my mattress!!

I bought ome for my daughter when she was re-doing her room. Very comfortable! But expensive-I think I paid around $200 for a twin!

I don't like the egg crate toppers. They feel good but get stinky and you can't wash them very easily.

On my queen size bed I use a twin size really fluffy comforter. It fits perfect, fitted sheet holds it in place and can be washed easily.

Yes, I have a memory foam topper for my full sized bed. It was a Christmas gift from my son last year. I really like it.

think egg crate's have sort of been replaced by the memory foam..and we had to replace them more often...

I think I'll try the latex, and thanks for the mention of Overstock. Do you put it under the mattress pad, or between the pad and the sheet or what?

I do not like today's mattresses--way too much "pillow top" and they feel awfully mushy to me. I bought a firmer mattress, and now it's too hard. I feel like crying.

We have the memory foam, it was $200, and worth every single cent. The bed went from so uncomfortable and killing my back, to the most comfy, cozy bed ever! I could never go back. I LOVE it!

The mattress on our bed at home has latex 'toppers' attached to it on both surfaces -- they make me hot.

I bought a foam topper at Costco for our mattress at the Maui condo -- about $100 for king size. That doesn't make me hot. (That one came compressed. We had to open it out; let it expand; air it out for 24 hours before use. I put it directly on the mattress, under the mattress cover.

Susan, I don't use a mattress pad anymore. I just laid the foam toppers on top of the mattress.

I know what you mean about feeling like crying. I'd have to look it up, but I think I my present mattress was my fifth one in four years. I was lucky that I got my money back on all the others, as they were inspected and found to be defective. I think 90% of the mattresses made today are defective!

I hung out for a long time on a mattress forum, where I learned all the things I wish I'd known when I started mattress shopping.

I have and love my egg crate foam topper, which is then covered with a mattress pad. These old bones need soft.
