Quite the scavenger, nick-named "flying rats" in coastal areas. But if you're bored, entertain yourself with their aerial maneuvers. They perform some acrobatic flying with their wing action. Being close enough, and slow enough, you can practice some action photography, which can be done right from a beach chair. There can be long waits for one to be in a correct position, so take plenty of beer.

Flying under the sun highlights the wings.

They have different looking eyes.

There can be a stare-down if you have food.

In many years, I've only caught one in full speed dive mode.

To snitch food on the sand, they land to eat. For more ambitious action, wade out in the water with some snacks. They prefer to grab it in flight, and use incredible wing action.

Look at those wings to drop down to a snack.

They do get tired after a days work.

Stay late, and see if you can capture one in the shimmer of a sunset.

Nice pics! I spent a lot of time with gulls on Long Island and in Florida. Here in landlocked PA, I sometimes feed them in parking lots. They usually hang out within range of a fast-food restaurant. Even if I don't see them, they'll show up if I throw some peanuts into the air. They are always watching!

Irish rose, What a beautiful boy! I lost my 15.5 y/o black lab,lance 15 months ago. He was my best kid ever! I've been wanting a new puppy for a long time but hubby wasn't ready until now and then springs it on me that he wants two puppies not one! I say it's double trouble but what a fun summer we'll have! I got my first lab from a breeder about 17 years ago and paid 550.00 for him. These puppies were an accident! A family friend has a male and female and thought that they could keep the seperate, YA RIGHT! We went to look at them and he said he knew how we loved and cared for our dog so he would sell us the first for 400.00 and the second for 275.00. What a bargain, huh. They are just thrilled that we would take two. The reason that we can't take them is that new hampshire law states that puppies stay with mom until they are 8 weeks old. It feels like forever! A few updates on these Sans... Gave my Mom one (trifasciata) which she left outside and in her garage all winter. It's kind of yellow, we'll see what becomes of it... Most of my Sans are in the ground at this point. The two main, big pots, somewhat separated and planted in various spots around the yard. Now, for sure, they aren't potbound. Have you ever seen Sans planted with Hydrangeas? Two of the green spots in front of the Sans are baby Hy's I propagated last year. No signs of any flowers yet, optimistically hoping some appear soon... more in-ground pics.

Are yours a linear lighting system? I know Seagull and Kichler had/have similar systems. If so, and if it is similar at all to Kichler's linear lighting system (tracks w/ wires and bulb holders that clip on to the wires/tracks)--no time to post a link or pics, then it could be the bulb holders themselves. We had that exact same problem with our Kichler U/C lights. Some would light, some not, when we turned on the U/C's. Some always needed to be flicked, others tooks turns, and others always lit. I called kichler initially, ~ 3 yrs ago, but problem never resolved. I finally got fed up, and called again last fall. Woman there checked with a guy in tech svce who suggested that we might have had the older style lampholders, that were known for this problem (!). They sent out a few of the new and improved holders for us to try out. They worked perfectly. They sent us, at no cost, replacements for all the lampholders (+/- 25, + some add'l bulbs for the future). Now I can honestly say, I love my U/C lights. I was very annoyed with them before. Worth looking into.....

Thank you justgotabeme! It is true, we find ourselves in the FRONT of the house quite often! The first evening, we poured cocktails and just sat out front and stared. We are very pleased! CEfreeman-Ohhh, what a long, peaceful country driveway that is! I wouldn't want it to look too "maintained!" Hi Lyfia! I posted quite awhile ago, I was very gung ho on the faux wood grain...as a matter of fact, I wanted to do a faux carriage door look, adding the rustic hardware. Most people were against it...and this was when I was planning on painting my house a dark color. Now that my house is so light, I don't want a big dark expanse that takes up such a huge chunk of the front. If my house were bigger, or the paint darker,I would consider it. I do love that look, just not for this house at this time. birdlover-yes, we are thinking two big black pots on either side of the arch...and maybe on the far side of the garage...with bougainvilla or some flowering vine set on a trellis just a bit off from the house walls so they don't actually grow on the walls! The reason we are thinking black pots is...when you drive to our house, you first see the south side of it...with a row of windows with black awnings over each window. So we feel the big black pots will tie the side and the front together. lukkiriish-thank you, I just love those california spanish homes! Thanks for comparing my home to one of those! Ok, again, I really appreciate every single comment. It has been so much work and money and as much as my hubby and I enjoy it, it is nice to see it be well received here!

I have a real fondness for sea gulls. They were so much fun to watch while at the beach....such little comedians ; ALWAYS looking for food stealing opportunities.

Those have got to be (adult and juvenile) ring billed gulls, right? I don't think I've ever seen one of those in person.

I tried and tried to get the laughing gulls in St. Thomas, but these guys are so hard pressed to steal food, they shout in your face if you are eating! And then, when you pick up the camera and aim it at them, they must think you're aiming a gun at them because they fly away so quickly, like they're running for their lives. Silly birds. Never could get a good shot. Glad you have some good ones, I feel sated now.

The below shows what they look like. That leaning in and squaking thing is in your face as you sit at the table trying to eat in peace, but they want your food.

Old fixer your photos are amazing, you've captured the birds so well and each one could be framed and hung. I love that you have such a passion, we all need one. Below I've attached some photos of Jamie Wyeth's enormous painting of seagulls, it's called Seven Deadly Sins and the birds are shown as examples of the sins. I've seen it in person and it's stunning. My passion is art so I'd love you to see these.

I think ring bill is correct. They are NOT my passion, just an easy subject to photograph, waiting for a clever shot. Make up a plate of nacho chips, soaked in a bottle of hot sauce. They will eat it. They swallow a hot dog, whole. PIGS!!
Hey YaYa, just what is that Wyeth painting site? One of my pictures is on it. Who put that there??

Sorry YaYa, the link you gave takes me to a "collage" of thumb nail images, many of them photos, and one of mine is in there. Not all the images are seagulls. Undoubtedly some are the paintings by your person too. Can't explain why your link gives me that weird result?

That is a link to google images so all sorts of results can come up...don't you guys use google to search for stuff? If not, you should start! :)

In the garden of my last house, I had a host of volunteer tomato plants because the sea gulls would eat tomatoes from the fast food places' garbage, then fly over my garden and deliver a perfectly fertilized load of tomato seeds that grew like weeds.

Great pictures! Loved them all. I am going to the beach tomorrow! I see I need to be more patient with photos. DH tells me-take a lot-its digital, not film, its free!

He's right, digital allows lots of extra clicking. Aerial birds sometimes give me blank sky, or tails. I never sit there and look at previous shots, wears down the batteries too quick. Have fun at the sand box.
