How Cold Was It Last Night At Your Place?

It dropped to 46 degrees here last night. I tried leaving a bedroom window open all night but had to get up in the middle of the night and close it because I was freezing! By 8 a.m. it had warmed up to a toasty 48 degrees. Paula, my peppers are loving the weather too and so are the green beans and cucumbers I planted for fall. They all have lots of blooms. The tomatoes are 'iffy'. The few remaining from summer still have some fruit coloring up and ripening although I lost a lot to major weather-checking and cracking during the endless days of cloud and drizzle. The fall tomatoes have small fruit but whether they will ripen before a freeze is just dependant on when the freeze comes. Ironically, we often have an early first freeze here in our area along the river because it is, after all, a low-lying river vally. So, sometimes we have our first freezing night a full month before the thermometer officially registers a freeze in Marietta which is on somewhat higher ground and farther from the river. I will cover up what I can when temperatures are forecast to go into the low 40s because sometimes (though rarely) it will get as much as 15 degrees colder at our house, although more commonly we only get 8-10 degrees colder on some of those early cold nights. Once they forecast 50, and we went to 32 or 34 a year or two ago. I'm going to keep hoping for that Indian Summer even though it likely will be nonexistent or just very brief. With our weather, you just never really know because sometimes it seems like we have fall, winter, summer and spring all in the same week. Jay, It sure has slowed up ripening....not that I have a shortage of tomatoes, but I'm afraid that all the greenies on the plants will turn red or pink or black or yellow the same day and then I'll have to can 'em or dry 'em because it will be too many at once. Everyone, after starting the week with 1600 peppers to process, I am down to one quart of peppers (habaneros) left on the counter this morning. I have a huge batch drying in the oven--one-half (stemmed, seeded and cut in half) is going to be ground down to powder after dry and the other (stemmed and then shredded in the food processor) is going to be habanero flakes....like red pepper flakes only hotter. Since it is cool, I have all the windows opened, and the pepper fumes are still impossibly strong all over the house. If I couldn't open all the windows and doors, the pepper fumes in this house might be lethal. Dawn

Every time I hear one of these stories I think, "The Menendez Brothers". 1993 I don't think to this day anyone knows what to believe "really" happened in THAT case.

When I sold my apartment people assumed we had staged it, but we didn't really change a thing except we probably kept the desk and mail more neat. Ida, I think that people are really losing their sense of the mind's eye and their ability to visualize and imagine despite being otherwise intelligent. Most people don't need that skill anymore and as knowledge gets more specialized, this just get shoved to the back. We also don't need to be able to spell correctly, or write grammatically in many fields anymore. Obviously one sees a lot of misspellings and and poor grammar in these forums. Or at the very least poor proofing, which still sort of proves it's not important. How many times have you read posts by people who misspell, have poor grammar, and don't seem very culturally literate who are building a 6000 square foot house with all the bells and whistles and no mortgage. It seems to happen enough. Obviously they are good at something. But being "educated" or well rounded is of less and less importance.

I've been to quite a few places that were outside my comfort zone. The one I would never go back to is Venezuela. We spent 4 days at a beach front resort in Caracas. Getting out of the airport was terrifying - people tried to grab us and take our stuff. The guy picking us up (from the hotel) was in an older unmarked van, we thought we were being kidnapped. He turned out to be a good guy and explained that he and we would be in danger if their were any signs on the vehicle that he was carrying foreigners. Our hotel was ringed in barb wire and there was a wall of plexiglass between us and the beach, with armed guards at both entrances. This was pre Chavez, so I can only imagine what it must be like now. I've been to mainland China five times, and I am quite comfortable there, although I am not a fan of their government and always kept my wits about me. I've also been to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia and Macau. I would go back to all of them except Indonesia. I have also been to and enjoyed Turkey. The people there were very kind to us. Egypt was scarier than I thought. As a woman, I couldn't be more than an arms length from my husband without being accosted. Guns were everywhere and that took getting used to. I would go again (so many amazing things to see), but would be very careful in where I stayed and book all private tours. South Africa was also scarier than I expected. We drove ourselves between wildlife camps and it is common to not stop at stop signs or red lights outside the city and their were signs requesting we not come to a complete stop due to 'high kidnap risk'. The camps themselves were safe and well run. I'd love to go back to Africa, but would do Tanzania next time. Russia was interesting to see, but also very sad. Tourists are only taken to the nicer parts of town, even so, they looked really run down. Once was enough for me. I think you can have a dangerous experience anywhere. The only place we have been robbed or attempted to be robbed was in the US (Las Vegas and New Orleans). Our scariest travel experience thus far was on a remote private island in Fiji when a former US serviceman on his honeymoon had a PTSD episode and attacked his wife with a knife. The locals had never seen anything like it and had no idea what to do. We sheltered his wife and barricaded ourselves in our unit until the threat had passed. He was very apologetic the next morning, but still we were glad to be checking out and often wondered what happened to her.

In early March of this year I went to Alaska to attend the ceremonial and official starts of the 37th annual Iditarod Sled Dog race, aka "The last great race on earth." Since then, have visited a few local areas as well. Plenty to see and do in Southern CA.

We're in a rut since we bought a condo on Maui. Every winter we go there for 4-5 weeks. This year we stayed a few nights Waikiki before hopping to Maui. Now we know why we just go straight to Maui!

Two of my favorite trips:

Three weeks self catering in the south of England: Converted oasthouse in Kent, cottage at Stow-On-The-Wold in the Cotswolds, converted coach house in Melksham, The Georgian House on the grounds of Hampton Court, The Old House in Birmingham.

Baltic cruise from London with two nights St. Petersburg only months before the end of the USSR.

Chicago and before that a bus tour of the Pacific Northwest, starting in Vancouver BC. The latter one is my favorite vacations in the US. I always wanted to see the rugged coastline there. We rode 3,600 some miles on the bus, the driver drove it to Vancouver, so he put 2,000 on before he picked us up.

Las Vegas - for business.
We had plane tickets to make it a shorter trip, but had to cancel them at the last minute because the pet/house sitter had a situation come up. So, we packed up the RV with everything we owned, including the pets, and made the long trip there from Bend, Oregon.
Las Vegas is not my favorite "destination".
Too many people there for me to feel comfortable.

To my sisters place in Kelso Washington about this time last year.
I spent time with her while she was at the end of her patience going through chemo for breast cancer.

She just moved not far away from her original house, and I would love to go see her. One day soon I hope.

DH just last week got back from sturgeon fishing on the Oregon coast with his dad. I was so envious. I am so glad though that they got to spend this time together.

About 7 weeks ago to Ma. We were in Burlington Mall and saw a security guard riding one of those Segways. My son made a comment about Mall Cop - I can't remember exactly what he said but I was bent over laughing.

When we got back home he told me that part of Mall Cop had been filmed at that same mall. I had to look it up before I believed it.

Drove to Framingham one day and saw the most unusual Walmart. It was painted white and looked like a house.

Washington, D.C. to see my DSIL and BIL. Well, wait we stayed with them and they live in Arlington, Va. We visited Washington, D.C. and New York City. They escorted us around as they are better drivers on their own turf than we would have been, plus they knew the area and best sites.

We took the whole west coast contingent to New York City a year ago this spring to attend youngest son's graduation from law school. We stayed at the Helmsley hotel across from Central Park (Park Plaza?) and son made reservations for us at some of his favorite high end restaurants. We had a wonderful visit, were treated like royalty, and made a significant celebration of the event for our children and grandchild and us. Toddler grandson slept most of the way back on the plane after helping to polish off the fresh fruits my older son had bought for the return trip. He did well on the trip too, which relieved his mother's anxiety and let her enjoy the trip more than she had anticipated.

Since I kicked out DH in February, and because I am woefully underemployed, I haven't been anywhere vacation-y in a very long time. Even with DH we mostly went on river trips, where I would shuttle him on his solo runs. Peaceful and beautiful, but not fun or exciting in any grand way. I plan a quick trip to Las Vegas to visit my cousins should I get a job soon. (Cross fingers, toes -- I have two prospects right now!).

One of the prospects would involve some international travel, so I just renewed my passport. Now I'm thinking a week in Paris and French countryside...but only if DH is reasonable about his divorce demands (grrrr) AND I get a job soon.
