Poor Shadow! Of course he's in my thoughts and hoping he gets better soon. Wish I could find a vet so dedicated.

I have had a bad feeling about this since Sunday.Shadow has pulled through each time and it is harder each time he has a spell like this.

I just got an email from DD. The vet came and he is definitly worse than before. Gave him another shot and upped the prednisone, DD asked what is next if the shot doesn't help? Vet told her there is nothing more that she can do. DD's crying. So the vet will come to the house again tomorrow night after supper and they will see how he is.

Damn I hate this part of loving animals! I was crying trying to type a email in reply to DD's.

good thoughts coming for shadow and his family! if you have access to a canine accupuncturist i very highly recommend them. both of my furgirls have gone to one, sandy for 3 slipped disks in her back (just did this april & may 2010) and tracey for severe hip displasia (several yrs ago). tracey flat out had a miraculous reaction, surpassing our vets hopes even, who told us we could try it, it would not hurt...she needs replacement but w/ this and supplements does very well. sandy had a good reaction, i wanted it to be just as great as tracey's but she's too nervous & agitated during treatment but it did help get her off most meds. she now goes back for touch ups and we notice a big difference in her activity level and energy for a few weeks afterwards.

I know how terrible back issues can be for our furbabies. We thought we might be saying goodbye to Kobi back in October when he had the disc problems.. thankfully he pulled through wonderfully and we got another 8 months with him.

Good thoughts for Shadow. I agree with what Big foot Liz said. Spinal manipulation and acupuncture has helped Amber's Harley a Jack Russell. I really would take my dog to a specialist.

I'm sorry to hear this. I hope they find a solution for the sweet little dog, Connie. Back pain is so debilitating, I feel bad for the little guy.

I'm so sorry to hear this, Connie. I hope they can find something to help little Shadow. Doxies are notorious for having back problems, but like bigfoot liz said, I have heard that accupuncture can be a big help.

Sue got a doxie in the late '60s, after we settled in Canada.

And, after our parting, had a couple more.

I dog-sat Lena occasionally, when she was old, after Sue's death when Kathryn was looking after her, so became somewhat attached to them.

I imagine if I had an elongated back, even of the vertical variety, I might have substantial problems, as well.

Thanks everyone. The vet was there again tonight. She is not ready to give up on Shadow and feels she can help him, told DD that she will tell her when there is no hope at all. Vet wants to keep an eye on him over the weekend. will come every day and has increased the prednisone. Gave him a increased shot of cortisone last night. So i hope she can help him.

I also have Dachshunds and they are just precious little dogs. My heart goes out to you and your family. Please keep us posted as to how Shadow is doing. (((Hugs)))

I'm sorry to say the vet couldn't help Shadow anymore. DD wanted so badly for him to get better.
They put him to sleep tonight a little after 7. The vet came to her house as she usually did.

Other DD and Heather's DH were with her when it happened. My DH and I were there for burial.
Heather is heartbroken. Everyone was crying. Thank you for the good thoughts.
Shadow just turned 8 this past April. Such a good,good boy had a short life.

I'm so very sorry to hear this. My thoughts go out to all of those who loved Shadow.

So very sorry. Boy do I know how very hard it is... it's been a week today for us. RIP Shadow.

Your family has been through a lot with the little guy, and you tried everything you could. He's not in pain now, but I know it's little consolation to you and your DD.

It is so very hard to let a pet go ... even if one does not make the decision. e.g. run over by a car ... but when that is on one's plate, as well, it becomes so very much more painful.

My sister has a vet like that. After her dog was hit by a car, the vet took him home with him for the weekend, just so he could keep an eye on the dog.
