An Eventful Day

Never a dull minute. DH finally got his skin problem correctly diagnosed Saturday and has started using the ointment for it. (After dumping the highly recommended dermatologist who was treating him for 'rosacea' and making everything worse.)

Today our DS, DIL and DGS came up for the afternoon. Had a great time, romping with the 4-year-old, our Westie, the guys. We were sitting around the table on the porch when DH leaned too far back in his chair and went over backwards. He rammed his left shoulder into the porch wall and really got hurt.

DS, who has worked as a paramedic, was concerned. DH was white as a sheet and perspiring. We took his BP -- 81 over 46. That's when DS said to call 911. The ambulance was here pronto. DH was still in a lot of pain, but his BP came back up and I drove him to the hospital ER. DS and family followed.

Only an hour later we had X-Rays and a diagnosis: partial fracture in his collar bone. We're home now with pain meds and a sling, still using ice on and off. It's going to be a long month ahead while this starts to heal.

DH has always been totally healthy. Nothing broken since he broke his nose on the tennis courts in HS over 50 years ago. He is not used to hurting or being a 'patient'.

I may be sitting at the K.T. more than usual.

That kind of 'eventful' we could all do without. I'm sorry to hear that your day went that way. I hope your hubby is soon all over all of his problems. And you, take it easy and just sit here as much as you need.

Aw, that's too bad, your poor guy. Hope he heals quickly. My DH is very healthy also for 71, and I hope he stays that way.

You are welcome Tiger Fox. The Dutch growers and flowermarkets have used the forcing process for amaryllis to controll the market so tightly for fall and winter holidays seasons by incorporating it into the world distribution chain. This has been great for introducing some of the most beautiful hybrid flowers on Earth, but has almost reduced this fairly easy perrenial plant to an expensive annual. I would like more people in more regions to enjoy more scapes per bloomset; more flowers per scape; more bloomsets per season; very long seasons [4 to 6 months]. You will find many well known experts saying these techniques can't be done. They are correct. They can't do them. You can. Try it and enjoy. If it does not work for you, email me. I have failed in my instructions and need to improve my communications. Two of my most troubling failures have been with people who speak another language. In each case it was an assumption I made that they would know a specific step. I am about to try to help one of them with my techniques and some other difficulties they have. Homestead Heritage is a wonderful place to visit. The people are friendly, the crafts are well-done and original in design, and you can get some really good stone-ground flours and corn meal (for those of you who bake!). Also, their gardens are a great place to get ideas. The restaurant offers good food, and a selection of cheeses and breads to take home. You don't have to buy anything, though. If you just want to wander and look, visit and absorb the peaceful surroundings, you are most welcomed. I suggest that your first visit not be during one of the special weekends. You get a much better feel of the place without the crowds. Then return for the Harvest or Spring special weekends.

UMass Extension Landscape Message #4 - 2015 RE Winter Moth Excerpt: "Some good news with all this snow is that it actually protects the winter moth parasitoid fly, Cyzenis albicans, so in the areas where Cyzenis were released, there hopefully will be great survival and lots of these flies to emerge and to continue their work in reducing winter moth populations. In fact, Cyzenis albicans flies have been released at 30 sites (from CT, RI, and MA to ME) and UMass Entomologist, Dr. Joe Elkinton hopes to release Cyzenis albicans flies at 10 more sites this spring. According to UMass Entomologist Jeff Boettner, “the goal is to collect winter moth caterpillars from as many of the 30 release sites as possible and rear them, to try to see how many Cyzenis flies are being produced and how far they are spreading.” Dr. Elkinton is looking for volunteers to help collect caterpillars in mid to late May, and he is organizing some collecting event days. If you are interested in volunteering to help Dr. Elkinton and his crew collect winter moth caterpillars this coming May, please send him an email at elkinton@psis.umass.edu." so sorry to hear that. sounds like my house *always* eventful too and not always in a good way....good thing son was there and family at least you had support. hope things go ok for you. oh and yes thats one of the reasons kt is here...to vent share the good and bad. we all need someone for that!

What did the 81 over 46 indicate? I know its a blood pressure number but I have no idea what it means....

So sorry to hear about your DH's accident. Hope he's feeling better this morning. And for your sake, I hope he's a better patient than my DH. He gets really cranky.

Sorry about your husband's injury. What a way to ruin a lovely day. I broke my collarbone when I was a kid. I was running in the house, fell against the big dining room table. My parents took me to the hospital, I got taped up and sent home. I remember it was painful.

I forgot to tell you how Sunday started -- before the kids came up and DH fell down.

I took a bath in the morning, and when I got out I used the diverter to rinse out the tub as I always do. When I switched back to the fill faucet it refused to turn off! I wiggled it this way and that, but hot water continued to gush out into the tub.

I threw on some clothes and went to the basement to try to find a hot water shut-off under the master bath. The tub is over a crawl space, so I wedged my nice clean self in among the spider webs and who-knows-what, looking for a shut-off. Above me it sounded like a hot Niagra Falls. I couldn't stand up and I couldn't crawl on my hands and knees for long on the concrete. Ow! Ow! Finally I deceided there was no shut-off.

The tub roared on upstairs and I cruised the basement, trying to think what to do. I didn't want to turn off all the water to the house, just the hot. Finally I shut off the water supply to both water heaters and turned off the gas that heats the water. Ah...silence above.

Why do these electrical or plumbing emergencies happen on weekends? I called our regular plumber; told them what I'd done; they said it was OK and they'd come Monday first thing. (And they were good to their word; were here and gone by ten a.m.)

See, I sorta started the day in the hole, then DH did his back flip. There was no 'third thing'...or I haven't discovered yet what it is.

Chisue, I'm curious ... if your DH didn't have rosacea, what was it?

Jodi -- It's eczema. The first dermatologist he saw, years ago, said she thought it was eczema, but none of the things she gave him to try helped. The "Bad" dermatologist (who gave him the topical that ended in disaster) had diagnosed roseacea. This new dermatologist says it's eczema. When we were in the ER for the collarbone we asked the ER doc and he unhesitatingly replied that it was eczema.

After using the hydrocortisone cream for three days, his skin is almost completely normal. (He wasted months on a wrong diagnosis.)

Well, good grief! What a series of boo-boos!

Hope he's on his way to mending soon. (I can't say anthing about men. I fell down in the carport Sunday and I'm sporting a couple of gooood bruises, myself! LOL)

Don't ya just hate days like that? I feel so awful for you and DH. Hopefully you now have these things out of the way, and smooth sailing from here on out.
