Family Festival

Event: Life on the Ranch: Family Living History Day
Location: Wilder Ranch State Park, Santa Cruz, California
Time: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Cost: $10 parking fee
Learn a bit of history while becoming a part of it. Wilder Ranch State Park invites you to participate in a series of hands-on, home-on-the-ranch activities inside the historic 19th-century Melvin Wilder Victorian farmhouse. Highlights include butter churning, ice cream making, branding, cooking and even roping. Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore the Victorian home and garden, as well an ancient adobe house built by the native Ohlone people, who maintained their village on the Wilder property. Discover what home life was like for early ranchers, farmers and Native Americans.

With more than 200 galleries and over 2,000 works on display, Artissima is Italy’s most extensive contemporary art fair, and has been since it began in 1994. This year’s featured exhibit is Back to the Future, devoted exclusively to works of art created between 1975 and 1985.

See 18th-century French cabinets displayed alongside the latest in the modern art movement, and a midcentury modern chair sitting atop a local craftsman’s carpet. Visitors can see and purchase great vintage works from masters as well as works from up-and-coming contributors to the design world.

The Sarasota Architectural Foundation is hosting its second SarasotaMOD festival. This year, it’s all about the midcentury modern design work of architect Paul Rudolph. The highlight of the event is the official opening of the full-scale replica of Rudolph’s Walker Guest House on the grounds of the Ringling Museum of Art. Other events include tours of the architect’s renowned 1953 Umbrella House, pictured here, and the newly renovated 1960 Rudolph addition at Sarasota High School, as well as tours featuring Rudolph’s work in the Siesta Keys and Lido Shores districts.

This event features over 70 galleries displaying ceramic, wood, glass, fiber, jewelry and metal designs by emerging and established artists. New this year, SOFA, which focuses on three-dimensional art, will have a section of galleries dedicated to painting and photography as well. For those interested in learning more about modern art, more than 30 exhibiting artists will offer lectures on contemporary quilt art, glass sculpting and more.

If you want a home brewing system you can control from any Web browser or are curious about controlling your sous-vide machine while at work, then this is the event for you. Hear an expert panel of speakers discuss everything from healthy habits to recipe recording, all within the context of smart-home devices. Then get the chance to play with these techie toys before they hit the market.
