Nope. We love bread and like toast or sandwiches, but bread served at dinner. Not at all. I don't even eat a roll at Thanksgiving or Christmas, because I don't want to fill up on bread.

The only time I have bread with a meal is if I've baked something that day, or my meal is a sandwich, or toast with an egg. Mom's meals were the same when I was growing up. Now, when I was married, he had to have meat and bread at every meal. I never acquired that habit.

When I make breads such as I did today, 90% of it will be frozen so that it lasts a long time.

Grains = carbs or starch. When I was a kid in Memphis, I was always always seeing platters of plain white sliced bread on the table when I ate at friends' homes, but we never had that at home, except when the meal was sandwiches or breakfast or when we had a fancy big dinner, and then there would be some sort of rolls. But it was never on our table as a rule, even tho neighbors did put out plain bread.

Today, the only time I serve bread is when it's garlic toast with certain meals like pasta, but it's only a small piece.

Yes, we usually do have bread at each meal. If I don't have it out my husband will ask if we have any. Butter on it too.

Yes pretty much every meal. My DH doesn't eat it when he is doing a high protein diet but other than that...most every meal. For breakfast I have a piece of toast, and I usually have some kind of bread with dinner. We mostly do two meals a day here.

Absolutely!!!! At least most of the time. Bread is one of my favorite foods. And I'm not too fussy about what kind but by and large I like the ethnic breads best. DH loves bread too.

My mom always put a stack of white bread and some margarine on the table with dinner. The only time I add bread at dinner is some garlic bread with pasta or the rare times I bake braided bread.

I grew up with bread on the table always. Our bread box held several types of bread, sliced white,rye,french,bagels,English muffins and rolls. We had at meals, we ate it for snacks. Lots of butter on everything. In the evening a snack might be English muffins, buttered and placed under the broiler. No one was over weight either.

Now I don't have it on the table when we eat unless it is special type to go with something. I do serve it at all holiday meals or when I have dinner guests. Actually we don't eat that many meals together at home. With only two of us ,on different schedules we tend to graze.

I still love bread products to snack on. I just don't keep too much around. It also helps that really good bagels and English muffins are hard to get. I am picky about my food. Whether it is a boxed snack cake or an expensive import or something home made it has to be something I really enjoy or I will leave it.

Forgot to mention we almost always had a bowl of yeast dough in the fridge. Not for making bread but for making things wrapped in dough ( piroski and such) or fried bread for breakfast. The flour covered wooden cutting board on the counter was well used in our house.

My hubby is diabetic. Bread is a carbohydrate. It is only on the table when the rest of the meal is very low carb such as a salad entree. Whole grain is all I buy, including a wonderful whole wheat sour dough from a local bakery.

I've been doing the low-carb thing and it soon becomes a lifestyle. I rarely have bread products in the house anymore. Every so often I'll go out for a morning bagel, but that's about it. No bread with other meals.

Not anymore, but growing up we did. I don't know if it was to help us fill up or just habit. This was back in the 30s and 40s, hard times. I remember in my pre-teen years eating at my girlfriend's house and asking where the bread was and her mother snarkily replied "We don't need bread to fill up." That remark has stuck with me all these years.

We seldom have bread.... UNLESS it is garlic bread (with Italian usually), corn bread, biscuits, etc (which is only once in a great while). We do have bread for sandwiches.

With four kids and two adults brown bagging it, any bread was reserved for lunches and we went through a lot of it. It burned my mother's butt that we would go through an entire loaf in a day, but when you are making 6 sandwiches with 2 slices each, what do you expect? Then she had us start toasting it and slicing each piece in half to make two paper thin pieces of bread to make sandwiches with ROFLMAO! We could stretch a loaf for 2 days then. The end pieces were eaten as toast, or used for peanut butter and jam sandwiches in lunches.

Now,FIL, he wanted sliced white wonder type bread at every meal. He grew up working tobacco (they worked the farm, but did not own it), and often there was not enough to eat. Cheap bread bought as seconds from a baked goods factory near by was a good way to fill bellies.

Growing up we did. I think it must be a Midwest thing by my own experience and reading others here. Had to LOL at Linda in Iowa--same here--no white bread (unless it's Italian or Harry buys it), no margarine and definitely no Miracle Whip.

We rarely have it, but since I made that cornbread of Glenda's we have had it lately. I'm freezing the rest of it today to avoid the temptation.

I have to have bread if the meal's Italian. But a plate of bread like mother used to put on the table? No way!

Wildchild, I never heard of English muffins or bagels until I was an adult and far away from my home town. :-) You must've lived in a larger city.

not like the good old days when people were working the farms and needed the calories....i make toast on sunday big breakfast...and often i'll have my raisin bread from sam's for breakfast..(very hearty)

we buy sour dough at costco and the raisin...then usually picked up a kaiser roll for lunches...they double for hamburgers and hot dogs...used to get "milton" brand (very hearty wheat) but got tired of it...

No not with meals unless it is sandwiches or something special like garlic bread or something to go with soup. I do occasionally make the Grands golden wheat biscuits for breakfast on the weekends. Being diabetic doesn't allow me to indulge in breads any more unfortunately because I love breads.

You definitely will not find miracle whip in my house either. We use Brummel and Brown which is made with yogurt when we want a butter spread.

Not at *every* meal. We have cereal and fruit most mornings -- and wheat toast or English muffin with butter or jam -- or a piece of a muffin. Most 'muffins' these days are just unfrosted cupcakes; a third of a Costco muffin is plenty.

We don't do sandwiches -- or hamburgers w/buns. I never buy 'duck bread'. That's the soft, tasteless, nutrition-free white stuff we used to tear up to take to the duck pond as children. (I know, not good for the ducks either!)

We like the La Brea wheat and rosemary breads and similar dinner rolls. (Something that gives your teeth a workout!)I never liked bagels, long before I knew how calorific they are -- even without their traditional toppings.

We have *either* a roll or another starch at dinner -- could be baked potato, pasta, whatever.

No margarine. No Miracle Whip. No "I Wonder Why" bread. No syrup-drenched pancakes, waffles or french toast at home.

We have pizza about twice a month -- with green salad.

We also eat desserts (cake, pie, ice cream, cookies, chocolate) -- just not huge portions and not daily.

I'm 5' 6", 115lbs. DH is 6', 185 lbs. We each carried too much weight in our late 40's, but had dropped the extra 20 lbs. by our mid-50's and have kept it off.

I often have a toasted bagel with cream cheese & a poached egg on top for breakfast, but since I'm a late riser, more of a "brunch" I guess. I occasionally make Beer Bread because it's so easy, but almost never yeast breads anymore. We always have 9 (or how ever many) grain bread around for grilled cheese or egg salad sandwiches. But no, I dont put a plate of bread on the table with every dinner meal as my mother did when I was growing up.

Speaking of the Depression years, habits die hard, and even into at least the 1950ties, my aunt ALWAYS had a couple of pieces of bread smeared with lard and gravy as part of her evening meal. Last I heard, she was still healthily into her 90ties, so it didn't seem to hurt her.

It depends on what I'm serving. If it's pasta or any other saucy dish, I always serve it with a sourdough baguette to sop up all the lovely sauce/juice. Also with soup for the same reason.

I would live on only bread if I could, LOL, which is precisely the reason I avoid it. If I do buy it, I buy whole grain, or once in awhile I'll buy my favorite bread from the bakery, a rosemary/olive oil loaf. I'm trying to avoid processed foods right now so I'm mainly sticking to whole grains like barley and quinoa.

I know you love to cruise, and cruise Carnival (mostly? or always?) but, have you ever cruised out of Port Everglades in Ft.Lauderdale? I know that Carnival does have a ship/ships? out of there. Anyway, I am not a bread eater, at all... BUT... have you ever eaten at the 15th St Fisheries pre-cruise? It's a pretty popular restaurant. Very close to the port. Well, the bread basket they offer is to die for! 4 different kinds of bread in it. You might want to check it out! Every single one more delicious than the last! ;0

I grew up in Newfoundland (eastern Canada) and we had bread at every meal......so it's not a "southern thing" or "midwestern thing". Every meal there was a plate of bread - homemade white that my mother made. Every meal. I remember my mother saying if we were still hungry after our meal to "fill up on bread". There were 6 kids and my parents were frugal. Meals were things like soup or stew or meat and potatoes. I guess bread and butter was a way of stretching the meal.

As an adult I rarely have bread with meals. Sometimes when we have friends or family over for a meal I will put out a basket of rolls or a baguette. But never sliced bread - in fact sliced bread goes stale in our house since there's only 2 of us and we rarely eat it.

I am sailing out of Port Everglades in Ft.Lauderdale on the Freedom, but flying in the day we cruise and same with flying home

Patti49 ~ I was born in San Francisco. I teethed on bagels. Bread and bakery products were a big thing in our household. Later when we moved to the suburbs my mothers started to bake more but bakeries items still remained a staple in our home.

Maybe that was why we weren't fat. Because they were a staple we took them for granted and didn't binge on them. Plus everyone was so much more active back then.

My lifestyle and dietary habits are so different today.

Most times no but if I make soup or stew I will make a loaf of homemade bread. When we have company & I make a italian meal I will serve garlic bread. We never eat out so every meal is made at home

I would love to eat bread at each meal, but my waistline wouldn't! My skinny minnie DH wants bread at each dinner, even if we are already having a carb like rice, potato or pasta! I give in maybe 1-2 times a week, but it's too tempting for me! :(

Growing up we didn't have the sliced bread on the table, but I remember other families doing it (probably the larger ones). My mom used to make these wonderful homemade English Muffins and other breads-SO GOOD!!

Most bread in our house goes stale before we ever get to it. So no, no bread at every meal. The time we eat the most bread is in the summer with tomatoes from our garden.(tomato sandwiches) Maybe I should offer it up at meals so it would get eaten, but probably not, as there is only the two of us and old habits are hard to break at our age.

I don't think I had a bagel until I was grown and out of the house! Growing up, besides white sandwich bread, we always had Thomas' English muffins in the house as well as an English muffin bread (not sure the brand) that was very good for breakfast. (Does anyone know where that can be purchased today?) We also always had Parker rolls for Sunday or holiday dinner (my mom usually forgot about them until half way through the meal so they were burnt). When I was a young adult out on my own--late 70s, early 80s--it was very popular to make banana, zucchini, or other sweet breads. I don't crave bread, but I do crave butter sometimes and hence the vehicle to carry it!

Casey, you have a "small" Nfld family. The Newfies that I used to work with often had 12-14 kids in the family.

That always floored me. That would be making a roast, turkey etc for every dinner! A lot of fish, though for sure.
