Joann,,,that email the says its from the IRS is a scam called "phishing". They are trying to entice you to respond personal information. You will also get emails from ppl in Africa that claim they are in some way related to a diposed king or other leader and they claim they have hundreds of thousands of dollars they need to clandestinely move to the USA. They will offer you a huge sum to handle that money through your bank account, then they go on to get all your banking info....don't you believe any of that none sense.

My IRS emails went to my spam folder. I deleted them without reading.

The IRS does not email anyone.
Bet it wasn't even addressed to you by name.

How in the world would the IRS even get your e-mail address? It doesn't get put anywhere on the tax return forms.

The FBI also emails me a lot, guess the agents from there and the IRS are bored!

I worked for the IRS. Believe me, the IRS NEVER EVER EVER emails customers. They communicate only by letter and phone calls. If you are worried, call the general IRS phone number at 1 800 829 1040. Whoever is sending you those emails is either joking or phishing for personal info. Don't bite.

I've only gotten one of these but had heard about them previously. Mine went straight to delete but, it was addressed to me personally. Scammers can get your email in many different ways. Just think of all the different people and companies you give it to. Could be any one of them or someone they forwarded an email to. Don't let that keep you from shopping online or corresponding with friends and family. Just be extra careful about opening emails from unknown sources. Better safe than sorry and if it was important and from a safe source, they will try again and in a way that you will recognize.

I've seen these before and they want you to send a copy of your ID and other personal info to them. No, of course it's not the IRS. Cynic's Rule #3: If information comes via email, odds are high that it's false.

Seriously, Don't even open spam emails! Just by opening them you can be sending a confirmation that your address is active and that you will open anything you get, which makes your address more valuable to scam artists. All it takes is a little bit of code written in there. Quite simple and very effective. People who open all email are much more likely to be gullible enough to do what it says.

Also if you're going to forward an email to, for instance, the IRS' phishing line, be sure to include the full headers. They can get all of this from your mail provider but it simplifies things if you do this.
