Well, Toni, it's actually my father who has terminal oral cancer (diagnosed almost two months ago) and is talking about cancer treatment (oral and lymph node surgery, facial reconstruction, radiation, etc.). I don't feel it's appropriate to talk too much about for possible legal reasons, but like I've said...cancer is a horrid situation regardless of who in the family it is and what type of person he/she is, and it's a unique situation here, where the person diagnosed is rather hateful, and fairly broke. My dad's an ornery old coot, and always has been, and is of the opinion that a wife has no claim to anything financial if the husband has provided the income. His personality is impossible to describe. It's like, if you'd been with someone for thirty years, who has verbally abused you, quietly racked up credit card bills, never let you see a bill in that time and refused to give you any account information, and isn't quite all there mentally due to several strokes...and then after he's cut all insurance coverage, suddenly he has cancer and, with treatment, might live an extra year or two, you'd be caring for him, and you'd likely about go bankrupt in the process. It's very hard and very scary for my mom. Normally such things would be a family decision and with some consideration for the spouse, and with some more logic about the expense and the chances of survival. He's a mean old brute--an absolutely terrified one, yes, but still how he is. He's dying and not taking it well. You mentioned mood changes with cancer treatment...God, can't even imagine with him!! haha. I know families go through the expense and hardships of cancer treatment all the time. It's just, sigh, a weird household. I've certainly learned, know who you're marrying before you marry. And if this all progresses, we'll seek help. You're makin' me want to run out and buy some plants. ;) Such good news about your job, CG! I'm so happy to hear.

I'm in mourning, I lost my last rose cuttings today

Nothing goes like you plan. Had everything ready. I forgot to ask George how he moistens the peat/vermiculite mixture so I used the garden hose sray in the cups before I stuck the cuttings in. It got too soggy. I tried to drain and squeeze out as much as I could. Then I look at the cuttings and don't know how to prepare them right, made another slanted cut under water as best I could, cut the flower heads off as best I could (some of these had three flower heads), some were very healthy but some had some brown stuff on them (none had mold) so I pulled those leaves off but not all of them, shook the water off, dredged in powdered hormone, stuck a pen in the mix, felt I had to pull some of the bottom leaves off or I couldn't poke them deep enough, stuck the cutting in that, pressed as snugly as I could, then buried them as deep as I could in the ground. I figured burying the cups in the ground might keep them cooler if it gets hot again, but then it was frustrating trying to get the pepsi bottles over them without touching the leaves and disburbing the cuttings more and getting the leaves tucked up in there. Some of the leaves are touching the sides, I guess that can't be helped. Finally I put up an old window screen to filter out some of the sun that will get through on the east side, most is blocked now by trees, but a little gets through in the morning. The north side would get some of the morning sun anyway and is not a good place right now, ground packed from cement work that was done, too hard to dig for me. I toyed with the idea of stapling translucent plastic to the screen but just ran out of patience. Once the sun hits the south, they should be ok in the natural light that is left. I was afraid the plastic would block too much light and I would have to move the screen every noon. I put the seventh one, the only one that didn't have a spent flower head, looks very healthy, in the cup, in a gallon baggie, blew some air in, sealed it, and set it on the table by my north window, put curtains to block the sun from the east window very close by. It made me nervous, and all I can do is hope for the best. You look at those cuttings and must have to have some special knowhow to know what to do with each one because each one is different. Then what to do with the rooting hormone with all the warnings about not getting it on your skin, wear rubber gloves, I didn't, so I sealed that up in a plastic container and will use it again because I don't like to waste it. I was thinking as I was struggling with all this and back was hurting, legs stiff, why am I doing this? Why not just buy my roses? Two more sets to go, one tomorrow and one the next day, I hope. Have to go to the grocery store and buy back some bottles. Maybe in time I'll gain confidence and more of a knack with it. It is not easy for me, and it is messy.

Roommate broke my bed
Q

Wow - years ago we got a call from my mother-in-law one evening saying a couple of 2nd or 3rd cousins of my husband (whom we'd never heard of, let alone met) were visiting from the UK and needed a bed for the night (M-I-L was out of town, cousins were in ours). Next thing we knew, two big and boisterous young women with backpacks were at the door, and what could we do but invite them in. Well, apart from "our" 2nd fl. bedroom, I had made the finished attic of our old Victorian into my own get-away space, complete with... aerobed, which I loved as being more comfortable for me than our shared bed (my now ex is 6'4" and I'm not :-). I hauled out some bedding and said goodnight, not being thrilled with the imposition to begin with (not completely their fault - MIL could have just told them to find a motel, hostel, YWCA) but one has to be civil). They left the next morning and I went to clean up, only to find that they'd broken my bed ... and I was furious! I had prized it so much because it suited me so well, and now I no longer could use it. Anyhow, your roomie is wrong (as you are aware) and as he plainly has no intention of taking care of it for you, would take him to small claims court to get back your money. No point in continuing the disagreement as it won't go anywhere good, and at least you know where to serve him with papers now. All your arguments are valid, and you did not even mention that the new bed he got apparently never got your seal of approval either. Get going on this and good luck!

I am so sorry. I know it has to be devastating.

I really know nothing about this but the barest of info, just seeing little ads on news sites, etc & I hope it IS true (not a scam) .... something about Pres.Obama wanting working moms to go back to school to further their education or get training. Perhaps there are some incentives? Maybe you could do a web search to check into it further?

I wish you all the best & truly hope good fortune is right around the corner for you Nicki.

I'm sorry to hear that.

A suggestion. When you sign up for unemployment, be sure to look into what programs are available for retraining--often courses at the county college. Sometimes, you can get free tuition if you're on unemployment.

Even if you can't get your courses paid for, why don't you consider taking an apprenticeship program at your local community college? You work during the day (getting PAID) and take classes in the evening. If you can get into a program like that, the college will help place you in an appropriate work situation. The pay probably won't be great to start with, but it's a step, and after a couple of years, you'll be qualified as a professional. Some of the apprenticeships our county college offers are things like: opticianry, paralegal, and other para-professionals. Good way to get a career and earn money while you're studying. And this is a good time of year to look into enrolling for fall. Good luck
