What have you read (or watched) lately?

I read "Alone: Orphaned on the Ocean" a true story by Tere Duperrault Fassbender. Very interesting.. happened in 1961.

I also read "The Three Only Things" by Robert Moss. I found the first parts (dreams and coincidence) of this pretty good. I've read lots of books on coincidence, but this is the first I read that now has me paying more attention to my dreams.

Movies I've seen include "Shutter Island".. this got really good reviews but I found it just 'okay'. DH didn't like it at all. "Leap Year" on the other hand got bad reviews, but I really liked it. Just a funny and predictable romantic movie.. just what I was in the mood for. We also watched "The Lovely Bones". Not at all like the book which I had read beforehand. I did like it though.

I like science fiction, "very" light reading and "fun" movies. I'm reading "The good, the bad and the undead". :0) Last movie I saw and loved....Avatar. Nothing deep. lol

The last book I read was the China Bayles mystery, Lavender Lies. I enjoyed it as I've enjoyed the series. The last movie I saw was Letters to Juliet. I really liked it.

I haven't looked recently; DH does the basic bill paying. But I was astounded the last time I looked at the bill for the upcountry house, which is a semi-private line (cheapest type available) and was used once, for a local call, in the preceding year. Bill total for one month, including taxes and fees, $26. I told DH that the one local call cost us $300. When we began the service, total cost was $5 per month -- and that isn't very many years ago. OTOH, cell reception is nearly non-existent, nearest neighbor is away more than not, next nearest neighbor is about a mile away. If someone has an accident and we need emergency help, $300 per year is cheap. I have to be honest and say that I resent paying long distance charges as a monthly additional fee. Fair enough to pay line maintenance fees, but ALL calls can use those lines, so why should I pay for something that I personally don't use and which in actuality is not a separate measurable service. If I make a LD call, charge me then!

My Sis-in-law sent me some books to read while I'm recuperating from foot surgery so I just finished reading: Peace like a River by Leif Enger...very good book with a Dad that has amazing faith and miracles seem to be answered through him. Like Jodi,I just finished The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Hard to get through the first few "set up" pages and it's set in Sweden so the names and currency system are different but a very good, although disturbing book. It draws you in through the mystery part of it but the events that happen to the girl are heartwrenching. And how she retaliates paints a mental image that is hard to get out of your mind. I must say, I'm looking forward to reading his next book "The Girl who Played with Fire" and as soon as I can hobble to the library, I'll get it. And then, for a fun book, she sent me the first in the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich, One for the Money. How have I gone this long and not read any of this series? Definitely a fun, easy read so I'll be getting Two, Three, etc. soon. I love to read, just usually don't make the time. Having to sit and keep my foot elevated is a perfect excuse. I enjoy all the recommendations from other KTers. I'm making my library list right now and adding Glass Castles among others.

Adella- that sounds interesting! I just finished Hillbilly Elegy which was an interesting as well. Here's a quote from the book jacket, " In Hillbilly Elegy, J.D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hanging around your neck." I really enjoyed the memoir. It seems similar to White Trash, which I will be looking for.

I just finished rereading "Anna Karenina." I'd read it 25+ years ago and loved it then, and wondered if I'd like it as much now. I did, and maybe even more. If you've never read it before, don't be daunted because it's long - it's not difficult to read, though it's quite thought-provoking.

As for movies ... "Toy Story 2"???

I'm reading Silent Truth by Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love. It's a little bit conspiracy with black ops and international intrigue, gives food for thought about how world politics can manipulate and change the world overnight given the right tools, a bit science fiction with a healthy dose of romance. I can hardly put it down. I started it yesterday and will finish it tonight.

I recently rented A Serious Man (Joel and Ethan Cohen). A rather dark comedy that I loved. Definitely not light entertainment. It's comedy that forces you to think. I enjoyed it immensely and watched it twice.

The last thing I watched was "Drop Dead Diva". I don't watch a lot of movies.

Ths last book was Earlene Fowler's latest Bennie Harper mystery "State Fair". Like all of the books in the series, it was excellent.

Maryanntx, I also really enjoy the China Bayles series, and think you would like the Bennie Harper series.

I'm currently re-reading Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales," Sigrid Undset's "Kristin Lavransdatter," and Stephen Crane's "The Red Badge of Courage." I like the classics!

I started reading "The Spire," by Richard North Patterson, but gave up on it. It was my first book by him, and I found it boring.

Now I'm reading "The Two-Minute Rule," by Robert Crais. I like Crais a lot, and this book has many fans. So I'm persevering, but I must say the book hasn't grabbed me yet.

I don't watch many movies, but I was sick this week. In addition to lots of episodes of Gilmore Girls and The Closer on DVD, I watched the movie "Enchanted." I thought it was charming.

I just finished reading "Cat O' Nine Tales" by Jeffrey Archer. It was a fun book of short stories. Enjoyable, but not spectacular like his "A Prisoner of Birth", which I read recently.

I recently read, Steve and Me by Terri Irwin. I really enjoyed reading about their life together. He was "The Crocodile Hunter". I am now reading, Behind The Grand Ole Opry Curtain, by Robert K. Oermann. Tales of Romance and Tragedy. It too is good. It has stories of many country stars in it. I don't watch much television so have not seen a good movie lately.

Over the weekend I finished the 4th of the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich and read "Suzanne's Diary to Nicolas" by James Patterson...I cried my eyes out...it's an early book of his and what a wonderful short read!

I've been watching Season One of Criminal Minds...great show...I'm really missing my weekly's...Grey's, Private Practice, CSI...Castle...but they'll be back soon!

Denny and I went to see "Robin Hood" with Russel Crow...both of us really enjoyed it.

Last night we rented "Avatar" and enjoyed that a lot too.

I just finished "Roll Around Heaven" an all-true accidental spiritual adventure by Jessica Maxwell. I never buy new books but I'm getting this one. If you liked "Eat, Pray & Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert you'll love it. For light reading I like Dick Frances.

I read "The Help". It didn't take long because it's one of those books I just couldn't put down. Harry read it after me and was the same way.

We just watched "Taking Chance" the other night. If you watch it, make sure you have a full box of tissues handy!

I went to see Killers with Katherine Hiegl last night. Not a great movie but good mindless entertainment. A fun watch.
