Sheryl, I'm sorry I don't know your whole story about your husbands passing, but if you have any doubts about his care you owe it to yourself and him to get the answers you need. Like you said, you need peace of mind. Good luck. Dottie

Oh, I'm sorry about your loss - I just don't have an opinion on what you should do - I guess it depends on hearing the whole story. Can you provide more details - if you care to?

My husband had the disease Ankylosing Spondylitis and was on alot of strong pain medications. On Monday, November 3rd he went to his pain management dr for his refills. On Tuesday he complained that his lower back had been hurting him but he thought it was just from the Ankylosing Spondylitis, but then he mentioned he hadn't urinated in 24 hours and was in so much pain that we should go to the hospital.

We went around 8pm at nite. I left the hospital at 2:30am and at 10am they called me at work & said my husband was in very critical condition. He was transferred that day to another hospital, but nothing could be done and he died on November 6th from what they said is kidney and liver failure.

Very sorry for your loss. Do what you feel is right and put your mind at ease.

I don't have any advice, except to make sure you explore the situation until you at least understand it well. The lawyer should be able to help you with that, and then you can proceed accordingly.

I agree with you. I think your peace of mind will be priceless. It's hard to go through life wondering "what if"??? I wish you the best.

My sympathies to you millburn. Did your husband take any over the counter meds along with his Rx's? Sometimes they don't mix, or cause an overdose. I'm not sure which meds it is, but that's why they tell you to tell your Dr. before starting yadda yadda. I'd go to the lawyer too if I could afford it. Peace of mind means a lot in your own health. My DH passed away 10 years ago this 4th of July. Long story short. He had an enlarged heart, and had cronic asthma and had had 2 servere attacks. He had to be life flighted both times. (We were only married 6 years, and in our 50's) That day, we'd had some problems with a neighbor kid in his early 20's being on our private ground 'again' at the cabin. DH argued with him. We were going to eat and were at our friends/neighbors up there. Within 1/2 of that arguement, he had to use the bathroom, which always happened with a bad attack. He came out of their bathroom and said "we gotta get back to our place" We had his machine he used to do breathing treatments, and an Epi-pen there. I'd gotten the Epi-pen because I knew if he had an attack at the cabin it'd mean trouble, because we're 10 miles from town. He couldn't even walk from the car and up the steps on our deck. I brought his maching out to him and strapped it on and started it, ran back in and called 911. I used the Epi-pen on him. He was gone in 5 minutes or so. Rescue squad didn't get there for 15 minutes. They asked me at the hospital if I wanted an autopsy (sp). I said "No, he's been through enough." Now I wish I would have. Just to know if it was asthma, or enlarged heart. His asthma was brought on by stress, among other things. But I'd know if I'd done all I could, or if it was the enlarged heart, or maybe an aneurysm.

I'm so sorry to hear about your husband. My DH was at one time diagnosed with AS...and then Mayo said that wasn't it.

I'm guessing your husband was given many of the same meds as DH took for months. And they do have side effects like kidney and liver failure.

No matter what the outcome of your appointment, it is still a tragic loss. I'll keep you in my prayers.

Wow, I'm watching the news and certain otc meds causing liver failure is the lead story. I have no idea if this was the case with your dh, but it's maybe worth looking into. I'm so sorry you are grieving and hope you can soon find peace.

I heard 5 or so years ago, that Tylenol was bad for your liver/kidneys. To much acetametaphin (sp).

I'm sorry about your loss...but, trying to assess blame will not help him, or you.

If you can find a medical malpractice attorney to listen to your story, the first thing they will do is assess the cost of investigating your accusations (and without a specific incident, this would be very costly), the cost of establishing who was responsible, and how much could be recovered from that individual(s) or business.
If it looks like it would cost more to find a responsible party than any judgement would pay....it would be very difficult for any attorney to take the case on contingency...and you would have to pay costs for all this.

Is it worth it to you?
Do you have any specific item(s) that you can point to where "reasonable care" was not followed that caused his death?

Sheryl & Leslie....I'm so sorry for you both. I wish I had some words of comfort. I just want you to know I sympathize with you over your losses.

I am sorry for your loss, Millburn and I am sure at only 6 or 7 months you are still grief stricken. I think an attorney reviewing your dh's medical record could indeed provide you with some piece of mind.

You don't have a "story", you have his medical record. And that is what an attorney will advise you about... whether there was malpractice, neglect, dereliction of duty, etc or that everything was on the up & up and he received appropriate care. I can understand your need to know. Best wishes to you for the piece of mind you seek.
