DIY Friday: Paint a Dishtowel for Kitchen Color
Brighten your kitchen with a flour sack towel in any color and pattern you choose
Sometimes a quick spruce-up is all we need to make our home feel fresh and inviting. Something as simple as a new and colorful kitchen towel can instantly brighten a space. See how a bit of paint, fabric medium and tape can transform basic flour sack towels from boring to beautiful.
Flour sack towels are great in the kitchen for their functionality, but plain white ones don't add color or personality to the room. That can be changed by mixing some fabric medium with your acrylic paint color of choice. All of a sudden, you've opened up a world of possibilities!
To tackle this project you'll need to gather:
- Flour sack towels
- Painter's tape
- Sponge brush
- Fabric medium
- Acrylic paint
- Small bowl for mixing paint
- Scrap piece of cardboard
Begin by wrapping your flour sack towel around the piece of cardboard. You'll want the center section of the towel to be exposed. The cardboard helps protect your work surface and will keep the paint from bleeding into the other layers of the towel.
Using the painter's tape, create line sections on the towel. Make sure the tape is secured to the towel firmly.
Tip: It helps to carry the tape over the work surface, securing the towel and cardboard to the table so they can't move around.
Once you've made a pattern with the tape, mix two parts acrylic paint to one part fabric medium in the small mixing bowl.
Use the sponge brush to paint inside the lines you created with the tape.
Make sure the color is even all the way across and reaches the edges of the towel.
When you're done painting, remove the tape carefully. You do not have to wait for the paint to dry to remove the tape.
Allow the paint to dry completely (usually a couple of hours), then heat set it with an iron.

Your embellished flour sack dishtowel can be customized to fit your design aesthetic. If stripes aren't your thing, how about polka dots? Chevron? Get creative with your patterns.
