Bunions. Anybody else have one?

I have recently developed a painful bunion on my left foot. I know why I have it. Partly heredity but mainly because of the shoes I wear. I am in a professional job and wear heels most every day. The bunion hasn't been bad enough yet for me to forgo my vanity and stop wearing my heels but I fear it's getting there!

Does anybody have any advise for how to deal with this? I was reading online about some exercises to do to keep it from getting worse. Just went to Walgreens and bought a gel toe separator and I have to say I think that has helped.

I guess this thing is here to stay??!! Can you get rid of a bunion? (short of surgery!!)

I had one on the outside of my left little toe. Those things really hurt! I went to my podiatrist and he gave me a cortisone shot in it and I've never had any problems with it since and that was years ago. That shot hurt like h*ll though.

My DH's family(as in brothers and sisters...11 kids all together)all have bunions. Grandkiddos too!! Our DD had bunion surgery years ago as she could hardly stand to wear shoes!!

I did some research on them and what I found isn't good. For one thing, they are virtually impossible to eliminate as adults so getting them in the nymphal development stage is what is recommended. This means finding where they are hatching. Also, fall cleanup is very important. They hate cilantro and this is recommended as a deterrent. They also hate peas and sweet clover. A biological control is nosema lucustae, which is a naturally occurring protozoan that causes disease and death in grasshoppers (and crickets). You spread wheat bran flakes, into which spores of the parasite are impregnated, around the garden. When the grasshopper ingests it, the spore ruptures and activates the disease. This makes the grasshopper slow and thus easy prey for the birds. This spore is not toxic to birds, animals or other insects. Like many organic techniques, this is not an "instant" cure; it takes time and is looked at as an overall long term practice that will control the pest. What I can't figure out is why grasshoppers this year? They are known to love dry climates. I never in a million years thought I'd be battling grasshoppers in NJ (Nebraska or Oklahoma, maybe) but not in the wettest year in NJ history. Tomorrow I'm going through my garden leaf by leaf. I'd like it if we celebrated Thanksgiving in October like our Canadian neighbors. After all, we're on the same continent LOL. Then it wouldn't seem like such a gosh darn rush of the season to me. The below sure makes sense as to why Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving earlier, at least to me: "Thanksgiving in the United States was observed on various different dates throughout history. By the mid 20th century, the final Thursday in November had become the customary day of Thanksgiving in most U.S. states. It was not until December 26, 1941 however that President Franklin D. Roosevelt, after pushing two years earlier to move the date earlier to give the country an economic boost, signed a bill into law, with congress, making Thanksgiving a national holiday and settling it to the fourth (but not final) Thursday in November.[8] Thanksgiving in Canada did not have a fixed date until the late 19th century, at which time it was typically held on November 6. After the end of World War I, Thanksgiving Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies were usually held during the same week. To avoid the two holidays from clashing with one another, in 1957 the Canadian Parliament proclaimed Thanksgiving to be observed on its present date."

Yes, it's clearly a sphinx moth caterpillar of some kind. Lol, that would be awful as slow as adeniums grow (compared to tomato plants) and knowing how much they eat.

I am going to have bunion surgery in October. I am so tired of not being able to wear nice shoes. I have had bunions for many years and am looking forward to being pain free.

I had the surgery about 5 years ago...Before that I could never wear a closed shoe even in the winter, there I'd be in some kid of sandal...Since then, it's been wonderful...I did have the shot which helped for a short time before the surgery....At the time, I worked in an office and was off just a couple of days...I did keep my foot elevated on my desk drawer for awhile...Best of luck....

I had surgery for mine - although it was a little bit of an ordeal at the time, I've never regretted it - can wear any type of shoe, and my feet look "normal" now.

I have a hideous bunion and will undoubtedly have to have the surgery soon. I'm limited in what kind of shoes I can wear, plus my foot hurts a lot of the time. Hope you get relief for yours, Jamie.

I have them on both feet, but the left is worse than the right. I quit wearing heeled shoes about 3 years ago except on VERY special occasions. The doc that diagnosed mine said to get the surgery before hammer toe develops. I'm getting closer to that point and will be visiting the doc again this fall. I'll be going straight to surgery.
