Sorry if this is a repeat topic; but can someone please tell me about figs. I've seen quite a few recipes lately featuring figs.

Where are they grown? Just in the south? What is the season for them? I have never had an inclination to eat one, but suddenly they are intriguing me!

I do not know any of that, just that I love them and eat them fresh and dried~~in Marmalade form on veggie burgers or cheese sandwhices YUMMY!

Oh, they are SO GOOD - hot from the sun, fresh off the tree in my yard!!!

Grant, it's almost "as easy as falling off a log"! I invited a friend to take some cuttings and I don't really remember when he took the shoots, but they all did well. He took one to TX and reported that it had grown to bush size in just a few months. Most of the sites I visited recommended taking cuttings in February or March. Honestly, here, I think anytime during the winter would be OK since we barely have any winter. On another note, I can't prove it, but I suspect my souring problem is exacerbated by having irrigation and an overgrown tree. I'm going to take a cutting myself and pot it up on the dry side of the yard just to see if it makes a difference. Meantime, if someone has another variety they'd be willing to share a cutting of later this year, let me know. Here is a link that might be useful: propagating figs from cuttings

Difference between Italian Everbearing Fig and Black Italian Fig

They are different. The fruit of the first is large on a small, shrubby plant (12-15') with a reddish brown skin and strawberry colored flesh. The Black Italian is a larger (25') tree and with fruit with jet black skin and dark red flesh.

Tell us more about what you want, a shade tree or figs to eat. If you want to eat figs, that 'bush' is well formed. I had 4 plants in a 12' x 14' space between 2 driveways in Palo Alto, CA. Each year there is at least the chance of a few days in the mid to upper 20's F. I learned about controlling height after the largest had grown so that I needed a ladder to reach the top. I used it to test out new varieties by bark grafting fresh new growth on the donor tree. I'd suggest pruning to restrict the tree to main crop figs; they are the best tasting in my experience. After the last chance of a hard frost I'd cut last year's growth back to 1 bud facing where I wanted the branch to grow. When that reached 6-8 new leaves I'd start pinching out the new growth buds until the season ends. Some varieties only need one pinching, others send up a new shoot that must be removed before it grows to a point that is out of reach. Do an image search on your favorite search engine for the string "fig pruning" to see the possibilities. Remember, main crop figs form at the leaf nodes. Figs can be cut back to the ground. They are tough mamas. You know, I think there still is a Fig Forum. You can try this link. Problem is, discussion on edible figs and someone's Ficus benjamina are all in the same forum. You can also try Fruit and Orchards. https://www.houzz.com/discussions/figs

thanks for that article Kay. I don't want to grow them, i want to know how to buy them. I'm in Wisconsin; do I buy them in a grocery store in the produce aisle? Farmer's Market? When are they "in season"?

Yogalady - sounds like you can put figs on ANYTHING! Grilled Cheese?? mmmm.... and what do you mean "marmalade form". Do you buy it in the jelly/jam section, or make your own? I must try these things now! :)

My favorite fruit of all fruits are figs!

Love them straight off the tree. Yummy!

LOL I just reread what I wrote~~I do not know why I used the word 'form'~~I buy it in a jar at Sprouts~~we have a restaurant in the city over called Eureka Burger~~they make a beet burger, I love it and get it with the fig marmalade and goat cheese served with sweet potato fries YUM!

I love figs, we had a huge fig tree back on the farm. I would go pick them and eat them right from the tree but you had to watch out for ants that had crawled into the center hole and the bees and wasps.
Last year one of my neighbors in the garden club brought me a huge basket full of fresh figs from her trees. You have to beat the birds and coons and other critters to them, they will eat the tree bare.
I bought a beautiful box of big purple figs at Costco last summer and they were the best I have purchased so check out the refrigerator section at your Costco. I see them in the grocery store too but they are so expensive.

Mom used to make wonderful fig preserves, I like them best just raw, pick it and eat it.

Not so crazy about fresh figs, but I do like dried figs.
I did enjoy some wonderful fresh figs in Greece a coupe of years ago.

I usually keep a jar of Dalmatia fig spread in the refrigerator - it's great with Brie.

When I saw "Figs" I first thought it was Glenda posting. Figs are really sweet and a little sticky. You would find them in the produce section--at least that's the only place I've ever seen them.

A lot of my neighbors grow them here in S.Ca. dh and i don't like them,so we don't grow any.We like fig newton cookies,but that's about all we like made with them.

As patti said,they are really sweet.

Speaking of fruit,i had my first fresh apricot right off the tree today.Both my neighbor and I have trees,and today when I was watering plants,an apricot from his tree had dropped into our yard,so I picked it up,washed it off and enjoyed it.
Love fresh fruit.

I'm not sure I'd like them if they're that sweet. but the southern living magazine has a few good sounding recipes (fig pizza!). I need to try one and see if I like it. Just had no clue where to even buy them!

Juellie- Figs trees are not hard to grow. I have (2) here in NY-Zone 6a. They are very resilient and almost like weeds. They do not require spraying of any kind to produce nice fruit. If they die off to the ground (due to frost/freeze) they grow back, often 6-8' in one year. I have hard pruned mine to stumps (to manage their size) and they come back and still fruit. If you find a fig tree, you can take a cutting, place it in water and it will root. They do better in full sun and protected from the winter wind. Some people wrap them in the winter, I don't because they are protected by a dense hedge. Try your local nursery and see what they have. You can always start one in a pot temporarily.

I bought a fig tree cutting at a 450 mile yard sale years ago.

Planted in my backyard and it is producing abundantly.

Unfortunately I no longer live there and son lets the birds get them :o(
