Look what we found in our yard today....

She's been feeding in our yard and Denny saw her up in one of our pine trees .

Wonder if she'll still be hanging around here in November....hehe

Had two ducks walking through our yard yesterday. I think they were on a Saturday night date. They went up through our yard and then walked right across Main Street. Of course, I was out there ready to throw myself in front of oncoming traffic.lol

That looks like a fall hunting turkey for Denny he wont even have to look for him....Then in the freezer fo Thaksgiving dinner....
I;m sure that is what would happen here.But the funny thing is they know when not to come in the yard.They are smart turkey..Most of the time smarter than the hunter but I would not tell your hubby or my hubby that..
Hope your leg is better that sure looks sore and nasty.

Yeah, if it were my propterty, the rocks have to go, if you keep your trees and especially if you add more. You'll surely regret the combination for maintenance, plus it looks odd. Give bit more thought to what you really want once you understand what's going to happen under lots of trees. Roots, no grass, need to mulch and will still have rake up leaves out of your yard every year and will have to weed the grass-less mulched areas to some extent. I haven't been impressed with the "natural mulch" of falling leaves in the front yard--they drift where they want to and leave bare other places, drift up against the house, etc and so you usually need to rake or shred or otherwise deal with lots of leaves on a residential lot. Not saying you have to make it all TIDY, with nary a leaf in sight, but just that I've not been able to just let them all stay where they will and still carry out proper home maintenance and even growth of other plants (in the forest, it's survival of the fittest and not necessarily in the shape you'd like). It may well work, but I think I'm hearing you may have a kind of fantasy image of a domesticated forest floor. Certainly the gravel is out of place in it. You might do just as well with nicely placed shade tree or 2 and some shrubs. Have you made a mostly-to-scale sketch of your front yard? That will help you decide where to place trees, which you can sketch in with their expected canopy spreads. It already looks like yours are too close together, but it may just be the problem with evaluating distances from a photo. 30'x 40' seems only big enough for 1 or 2 shade trees plus a few smaller understory shrubs or trees.

You know there are some plams I really like but there just ain't no use gowing them cuz they do nothing,heres my short list-S.minor,T.nanus,C.humilus( a larger plant would probably remove this from the list but cold hardiness has to be factored in)Needle palms,these are hard to establish this far north but this is one I will probably keep trying as it is extremely hardy!Blue needle palm,I would like to try this again as I think my small one may have come back,they are very sloooow and I will replace with S.louisiana-anyway you get the point,this logic reverses when you consider something like a Washy,they may not be super cold hardy but they repay you with incredible growth!

I love how mother nature created critters to blend in so well in their home. We get some type that's all white and fuzzy. Last summer one of my grands broke out in a rash all over..turns out it was from the fuzzy caterpiller. He didn't touch it but was looking at it and it was a windy day. Beautiful picture you've shared. Thank You.

I have never seen a wild turkey. I have lots of birds in my yard, I have seen hawks.

Several years ago they brought in a bunch of turkey's to our area...Now they are overtaking many places. This is the first time I've seen them this close.

We've been expecting to see them roosting in the trees in the dry creek area. The deer come there every spring to have their babies. We always have fawns out there. They are so cute.

Patti those things are all over our land. I love watching them and especially when the Toms fan out their feathers. Beautiful!

They transplanted a bunch of turkeys to our area a couple of years ago. It was quite the sight to spot them and make a u-turn on the canyon road to see if we could spot them again. This last winter they were ALL over town. So now it's a ho-hum, turkeys again. We should start seeing them again soon as they bring the poults down with them to "graze" in the fields around town. I never put food out for them because they scratch like hens and I certainly didn't want to invite them into my garden. Luckily, they stayed on their own side of the fence. The dogs made sure of that.

There are so many wild turkeys around us,we have two farms, and I sure would like to know how people cook them. I would think it would be different from our regular turkeys. We saw a mama with her little ones crossing the road in front of us the other day. We could kill some in season if I could find out what to do to them to get the wild taste from them, do you know anyone?

That's strange I saw my first wild turkey here just a week ago. He was in the pasture walking toward the tank, but when he saw me he took off running.

Couple of years ago the kids were up visiting and we were deep frying a turkey in the driveway. A wild turkey came strolling up the driveway, like he was going to join us for dinner.
Turkeys do like out yard. Last year when DS#1 and wife were camping in the front yard, lakeside, every morning around 8am a turkey would come and walk around their tent. DIL got quite a kick out of it.
