Update on my nephew, Alan

He is still with us....in alot of pain but living still. A few months ago the hospice nurse told them to get the family there to say goodbye to him because he wasn't going to make it through the night. There was about 20 people there to say their goodbyes but he made it. This has been going on like this ever since. He sleeps alot, wakes up now and then to eat or talk a little. They keep him comfortable with morphine, he has painful bed sores. The doctor said his heart his young and strong and that's what's keeping him lingering like this. It's so sad to see......I can see how it's wearing them all down, such a hard thing to watch.

Update added: We went down and saw my new nephew Aiden. What a little cutie. He is in the nursery full time and has an IV in his poor little head running all the time. This evening though they finally got to put him into his mama's room so that is good news. They left the port in his head just in case they need to use it again. The funny thing is that he looks just like Hayden, the two can be twins. I feel for my sil, her mom is totally mean and driving her nuts and is no help at all. She was going to stay for a month to help out, and with the babies problems she will need the extra help but out of the blue said good bye last night and no one has seen her since. My sil overcompensates by saying that she will just figure it out on her own. She hasn't been around babies and only has 2 weeks maternity leave, 2 days gone already. I hope to go down on Sunday when they get home and snuggle that baby. I will post a pic in a new post when DH gets the pics downloaded. Stacie

Gwanny, Six months after my stem cell transplant I was told that it didn't work and the cancer was "raging". I was sent to City of Hope in Pasadena where I was told to go home and get things in order to die. We couldn't accept that, changed doctors and my new one contacted her mentor the head of oncology at Scripps San Diego. I was accepted into a trial treatment (different type of stem cell transplant). I would be the 1st person to undergo 2 stem cell transplants less than a year apart. It's extremely hard on the body. My odds of survival on a good day were 25%. That was 8 years ago :) We believe the reason why the City of Hope wouldn't touch my case was because they anticipated my demise...it doesn't look good for a hospital to have a sure death on it books. And I suppose I understand that part, but way I was treated sticks in my craw. I wasn't offered nor did that "certain" doc seem interested in helping me survive. We were way past fortunate to have come upon a doctor who knew a doctor... My thoughts are with you and your family.

I asked about that too....he's fully covered on medi-cal now and she will have no lingering medical debts they say...I hope they are right. As far as a will, he really has nothing to leave behind. He gave his truck to his sister, that was important to him that she get something that mattered to him. She just turned 17 and is really having a tough time with all of this. They are very close. He has no bills or huge bank account, so nothing really to will to anyone.

This is just so sad.. life is so hard to understand sometimes. This made me think. Why is it that it seem some people are more prone to get this horrible disease than others? It makes you wonder, ya know? Some people go their whole lives with no cancer.. yet, some... get it over and over again. And Alan, being 24.. ?? I feel sooooo bad for him and you.. and all of your family right now. I cannot imagine how he feels. I'm sending lots and lots of prayers and hugs. You have all been on my mind constantly. After hearing how much help the Hospice was for so many people in the posts above, I'm seriously considering calling the Hospice where I live to see about volunteering. I think it's time for me to give back, ya know? I haven't needed medical help, but I've been blessed to be the recipient of alot of other help.. and it's time to return it. Please take care and keep us all informed, k?

I am so sorry everyone is having to endure this.My Prayer is if healing is not to be, that he not have to suffer longer. This has to be h3ll on him and everyone that loves and cares for him.

I'm sorry too Vickki. Prayers for a peaceful passing if there's no hope of recovery. Sometimes it's a blessing. It's so hard on those loved ones around him.

I've been wondering about him too and hoping he's not in too much pain. I'm sorry to hear about the bedsores and hope they're able to treat him. I really can't imagine anything more hellish that to watch a family member/close friend linger this way and I hope he finds peace soon.
