Prayers and good thoughts needed for my new nephew

My sil was induced this morning because her doctor is going out of vacations in a couple of days. They started at 8 and she needed an epidural by 10. The baby's heartbeat would lower each contraction. By afternoon she was still having problems, when she would have a contraction before she started pushing, each time the baby would rise back up in the birth canal and the heart rate would go down significantly. Finally at 5 they decided to do a episiotomy and then use suction to get the baby out. Well by that time it had a bowel movement in the uterus ( meconium staining) and the cord was wrapped around his neck. He also was pure white and wasn't crying or moving. The cord was so tight around his neck that they had to cut the cord off of his neck. They have him in the nursery with an IV since then and will continue through the night. He did latch on and breast feed for a little while. The doctor said afterward that he thought things were okay so he just continued and maybe should have suggested a c-section. He was due today and was 19 inches but only weighed 5 pounds 7 ounces.

His name is Aiden Roger Almquist so if you could spare a prayer for this little fighter. I am just heart broken and am so worried about what the results of the meconium and loss of oxygen might mean for him. He is their first baby. Add to that my SIL 's mom is a real nut and can't stop talking about all the problems and worries, when my sil is so sorrry and worried as it is and doesn't need any more people adding to her worries.

So say a little prayer or spare a thought for Aiden.

Mighty special thoughts going out to little Aiden. Don't worry about the meconium though. It's a sterile substance and won't do him or her any harm. My first grandson did that, too. Aiden should be fine on that front. I think maybe they told about it but didn't mention the doc nurse letting them know it doesn't cause problems and isn't the result of problems.

The funeral was this morning. It was beautiful, & it was the most heartbreaking thing I ever saw. Beautiful church, with beautiful flowers in tiers upon tiers, filling the entire end of the sanctuary where the pulpit was.. & 4 caskets, 1 just about half the size of the others. 3 ministers, 4 eulogies, 1 for a 6-year-old & 1 for a 3-year-old. What can you say in a eulogy for a first-grader? for a toddler? They said Michael was smart as a whip & loved the water & asked pointed questions & never met a stranger. They said little Landon was born in perpetual motion & brought a smile to every face. & Landon, a surprise baby, may have saved his mother's life: Had she not had a sonogram, the cancer that was growing inside her might not have been discovered until too late. Thanks to everyone for your thoughts, prayers, & good wishes. It means a lot to me & to my family.

Thank you all. I felt such a calmness that I knew it had to come from the good thoughts. Well, the judge refused to hear our case today. We got all settled in the courtroom and our attorneys briefed the judge on our case and then she said she needed more information on our retirement accounts before she would continue. So, basically nothing happened. After we get the information she wants, they will give us a new trial date. So.... the drama continues. I do appreciate all of your good thoughts.

Better to have this mixed news that at least he's alive and well. But his walkabout continues with something less than concern for the feelings of his family. The guy decided to take an extreme step and leave with an untidy departure. From the family's perspective, the ongoing situation remains confusing and difficult. They can't sit around waiting for the phone to ring, it doesn't sound like he'll be calling. There was a cause, whether it's a mental health one or something else going on in his life, this was what he did. He's an adult runaway of sorts. People need to come to grips with the fact that "things" will never be as they were before he left. Maybe for good reasons, maybe not. What was the cause of his actions may never be fully known or understood. Everyone concerned needs to work through this terrible and unfortunate experience. and maybe counseling would be helpful. Thanks bestlawn, they did an x-ray of his lungs already and didn't see any staining in the lungs. I am just worried about how long he may have been without oxygen with the cord being wrapped so tight around his neck and having trouble since 10 oclock and didn't snip and do suction until 5 this afternoon.

My DS had the cord wrapped around his neck 4 times and had a very low Apgar score. He turned out fine and is a handsome, smart, strapping almost-22 year-old.

Hope Aiden will be fine. Congratulations, Auntie!

As an NICU nurse, I have probably looked after thousands of little babies with meconium and delivery problems. My best guess is that little Aiden will be just fine. I say this because he recovered quickly. He was well enough to latch on and breast feed. That is a great sign there. If they were at all worried about him they would have fed him by feeding tube to make sure his suck swollow was intact first and he wouldn't aspirate. He doesn't need oxygen or a ventilator because he didn't get any meconium in his lungs.

I'm really surprised they didn't do an emergency C-section after his heart rate started to go down? I thought that was standard procedure?

Anyway, Very special thoughts for Baby Aiden and his Momma!!!

Thinking positive thoughts for little Aiden.

Similar thing happened to my niece's first son after she was induced, Jake didn't want to come down the birth canal and was very sluggish with cord problems too. He was put on a ventilator and all kinds of monitors - very scarey time for us all but he is a big stapping 6 year old boy now. He was a big baby though.

Congratulations Auntie Stacie! Wishing all the best for the family and hope they can bring the little guy home soon.

Update added:

We went down and saw my new nephew Aiden. What a little cutie. He is in the nursery full time and has an IV in his poor little head running all the time. This evening though they finally got to put him into his mama's room so that is good news. They left the port in his head just in case they need to use it again. The funny thing is that he looks just like Hayden, the two can be twins. I feel for my sil, her mom is totally mean and driving her nuts and is no help at all. She was going to stay for a month to help out, and with the babies problems she will need the extra help but out of the blue said good bye last night and no one has seen her since. My sil overcompensates by saying that she will just figure it out on her own. She hasn't been around babies and only has 2 weeks maternity leave, 2 days gone already. I hope to go down on Sunday when they get home and snuggle that baby.

I will post a pic in a new post when DH gets the pics downloaded.

Wow, I never heard of only two weeks maternity leave.
Is that the trend now?

So glad to know Aiden is better, but I don't know what you're saying his problems are or why the tube in his head. Just curious, and still sending special thoughts for the little guy.

They put the tube in his head to use for an IV. My brother didn't understan why they were doing this or what they were adding. Poor kid, only 21 years old and now this, too much to understand and not enough explanations. Being my SIL I don't feel comfortable stepping in and asking questions. My sis the nurse is going in tonight and hoping she will answer questions. One thing was that they thought that he was dehydrated so they started the IV but not for sure.

Sometimes we don't see the blessings we have even when they are right in front of us. Having the Mil out of the picture might be the best thing for the parents. I have a feeling from what you have said, this little guy is going to be a typical baby with typical parents trying to figure out what to do when they get home. Yes, it would be nice to have help but not if its going to CAUSE MORE stress. If I were this babes mom I would ask someone else to help or do it all on my own. I'm stubburn like that. A good baby book and some sleep go a long way for a new mom. Maybe you could offer to hold the baby a few hours while she gets some rest next week. He sure is a cutie.

Toni said what I was going to say. They're probably lucky the mom left. I wouldn't want her around. She sounds like a flake. Two weeks maternity leave??? Where does she work? That's odd. Or could it be just paid for 2 weeks? I'd be suprised if her Dr. releases her to go back to work that soon.

Leslie..they let the Moms' go back to work way to soon don't you think?! My DIL went back 10 days after Ewen was born. I agree, if her Mom was stressing her out, the best thing possible was when she went home. Things have a way of working out , sounds like they have some great family support without her! Kathy
