Yet another dish drawer question!

Is anyone keeping everyday dishes in an 8 inch high drawer (usable height of about 6 inches)? It works for our current set, but I don't want to prevent making changes in the future. I'd prefer a 4 drawer stack (6, 8, 8, 8) but could do 3 if necessary. The width is about 30 inches of usable space.

I asked this type of question a few months back.

In the end, we opted to stay with a 3-drawer stack. My current dishes would fit fine in a 4-drawer stack, but if we were to change plates (which we are doing after having my Pfaltzgraff for 20-ish years), it might be an issue. My Pfatzgraff plates are rather flat, but some of the plates I've looked at have more of an upward slope. So, we stuck with the 3-drawer. Also, it turned out that I preferred the look of the 3-drawer unit where it was located...the 4-drawer mock up looked "busy" and we were trying to keep clean lines through the kitchen. For some reason, I've found that a 4-drawer unit looks "better" to me when it's a narrower cabinet (24" or less). Our dish drawer is 36" and I just didn't like the look of it as a 4-drawer. So, my decision was made partially on aesthetics.

Having said that, you could go to a 4-drawer and even if your plates are going to stack higher, you could have the plates in 2 separate stacks and use a 2nd drawer if needed.

I currently have a 3 stack but will soon have a 3.5 stack.
My 10 inch drawer is being divided to deal with the weight factor.
I will have a smaller pull out inside the drawer - so I will have full width
The lower part will have the drawer front and handle - so it will look like a 3 stack
I am thinking of swapping some items and putting my serving dishes in the top part.

Hi erikanh, our kitchen in the "in progress" section of the fkb. DH is making some of our lighting fixtures and I refuse to call it done until they are up---so we've been at 95/98% for 3+ years (our cabinets were installed March-June 2005). Good thing we have classic cabinets. Otherwise the kitchen would probably be hopelessly out of date by the time I consider it "done". Please be assured that our cabinets are really nice and straight : ) I know what it's like to fall in love with cabinetry. I first scoped out cabinets in a couple of local lumber yards in the early 90's. There was just one line of cabinet I really really liked and I put some literature in a folder. More than a decade passed and I checked out cabinets again in 2004. I was introduced to CP by a family member. I loved them and compared to some bathroom cabinets we had made by a cabinetmaker friend they seemed like a good value. After ordering the cabinets I found my old folder from 1991 and the cabinets I had loved then were CP! Obviously their sales method had changed (no longer in lumberyard kitchen showrooms) but my heart held steady without me knowing it. Lucky thing we waited so long because we're at a different point in our lives where we're willing to spend money on the infrastructure of a house we hope to still be living in in 40 years. Yet another Double vs. Single Sink question

I use jelly rolls (cookie sheets with a lip around) two or three times a week to roast vegies and such. The only way to clean these is to soak it in the large single sink while we are eating dinner and wash by hand. They are too big for the DW. I also use many large pots and pans that do not fit or can go in the DW, ie LeCrueset. These often need to be soaked. I would NOT want to soak these on the countertop. Just my thing. So even if you wanted to have a double sink, I would make sure that there is at least one sink that you can soak your pots and pans that you use regularly. I think double sinks that are divided to have one large and one tiny can be a reasonable compromise, especially if yo use the disposal quite a bit AND you do not have a separate prep sink. I do not use the disposal. I put everything in the compost. So this is not a necessity for me. I have never washed dishes by "soaking" the dishes in water. I just turn the water on and off as I need it. For example, I squirt the soap on the sponge, scrub what I need to wash, then turn on the water and rinse. For this reason, one handle faucet is a must for me. I could NOT use two handled faucets. They are too disfunctional for the way I do the dishes. I tried the dishpan for a few days. I did not know how I would store the darn thing. (storing it in the sink defeated the purpose of having a large sink!) I tossed it. If I ever need to soak something, I fill a large pot that is dirty (or just get it out) and put other smaller things in there. This is a rare event. I think you have to figure out how you work and create the equipment that works best for you.

Refrigerator/Freezer: what is the length (height?) of each door? I would probably scale them to the door if there's a big difference in size otherwise, probably the same. But, I recommend getting a couple in each size and holding them up to the drawers (and refrigerator & freezer) to see how they look. Don't buy all of them until you're sure what you want. You can use the always fashionable blue pulls until you've decided (blue painter's tape)! HTH!

Three v. Four Drawer Stacks for Dish Drawers

A 24” framed drawer stack is too small in width to be a good dish storage cabinet. The interior space of the drawer will be around 18”-19”, depending on hardware choice. In frameless, you get more like 21”, depending on drawer material choice. The most used dish in any kitchen is the dinner plate, at 11” round. That leaves right at 6”- 10” for either bread plates, or glasses, or cups. If glasses and cups is your choice, as they are actually used more than the plates, then the 24” drawer is significantly undersized. You don’t stack glasses and cups. That means having a much wider heavy duty drawer to combine both those and plates, or another drawer, with glasses and cups in the top drawer. That’s at least a 10” drawer, and it won’t align with the standard 6” top drawers of most cabinets, breaking the line around the kitchen. There are ways of doing this, but there are going to be trade offs on function vs aesthetics.

I'm keeping everyday dishes in a 8" drawer and a serving for 8 has plenty of room. I have large plates, small plates, soup bowls and cereal bowls in a 24" cabinet.

I think it would depend a lot on your dishes. Mine are china, so are not as thick as some sets.

I just measured the inside of my newly-installed drawers. The dish drawer is 10-1/2" from the inside bottom of the drawer to the bottom of the drawer above it. A stack of 10 dinner plates is only 6" and they have a fair amount of "lip". 10 large soup bowls are the same height. I've attached a picture. The drawer is 35" with an Interior useable width of 31".

I have my dishes in a 3-drawer stack and I am doing a 4-drawer stack in my new kitchen. I have too much wasted space above my dishes in the 3-drawer stack. I am doing more 4-drawer stacks all over my new kitchen, actually...

hbr - I agree on the wasted space. Mine is actually a 12 inch drawer but you lose about 2 inches in space. I stack 12 dishes and it is no where close to the top - hoping my inset will be helpful.
