Love the cork floor need help tying the room together (pics)

Hope these pictures come through! First time I've ever uploaded pictures, used a photo sharing site etc. If someone can post how to embed them I would try.

Love the cork floor. It is warm, soft to stand on and I love the fact that it is "green". So far the floor gives great support when I stand-I had absolutely no back problems after baking, cooking etc.

This project is not a total kitchen makeover. Prior to discovering this site we had taken down the wall between a small dining room and my 8ft by 10ft kitchen to allow more light, add a peninsula and more storage space. My husband did not want to remove our cabinets so he cleaned them up and re-stained them the same color as that is the color he loves. We had and have kept to a $8,000.00 budget by doing most of the work ourselves. My mistake was wanting both a warm and shiny kitchen without a real vision of how all the elements go together. We both loved the Romano Blanco granite and i wanted a MOP back-splash or recylcled glass-I ended up with recycled tiles that have a soft iridescence with hints of blue, violet and yellow. Originally i was going to add accent tiles but after they came in with an error decided to forgo them. To pull it more together I painted the kitchen the same color as the dining room, painted the window trim white (it had been stained) and tiled around the window. I picked out very simple pendants that fit in with the light fixture in the dining room and added light nickel hardware. We still have not finished putting in the hardware, putting the floor trim in or hanging the lights. Would a blue color on the walls pull it more together? I would be willing to stain the peninsula (darker?) my dh will go along with that but not the other cabinets as he worked hard on them and really wanted them the way they are. I really appreciate your help. Thanks!

I do think the yellow color on the wall makes the counters & bs not flow with the rest as well as they could.
I think a greenish blue would be nice and might help keep the tones from being off. I would not go with a blue that has gray tones to it.

Dianalo I guess you were able to get through. Do you have a specific color in mind? I tried several Behr samples on white posterboard but they really didn't fit. Thanks for the input.

kiki how high does the niche in the fireplace go up? I'm seeing a beautiful print or a huge mirror in there. I'm a mirror over the fireplace gal. I keep looking at that beautiful bright room and something is not right to me. I think the furniture placement is not showing off the architectural features of the room. Listen to me, sound like I know what I'm talking about, don't I? Not really. However, I do watch a lot of HGTV (I hear the hisses and boos now) and I do pay attention to what the good designers say about furniture placement. Can you post a photo of the entire room or if it's too big, the other side that we can't see from the photo you posted? I hope you don't mind that I want to rearrange your room. It's so pretty, I just want to play with your furniture and accessories. LOL I know there are others with a better eye than I that can chime in to assist me in my quest to rearrange the room so the fireplace and those magnificent windows are not blocked. johnatemp, ty so much for the tips. I'm going to copy this and save for DH. He'll need all the help he can get when coming time to paint :) kmc, I really do love the antique what. I just wonder what it'd look like with my bright white trim. rose, I'd love if lowes or someone here would offer making us a template, but I asked. They said they'd only do that if THEY were installing. I even offered to pay them to come double check measurements, and they said nope. I did find a local company yesterday. They claim the starting price for their laminate WITH install is $8.50. Goes up to $9 something, depending on the edge. And just $6.50, if I wanted them to just slap some new laminate on my existing counter tops. I actually talked to two smaller companys, both were about the same. Sooo..we'll see what kind of estimate I get. Both are coming out next wk. I just know I don't want to pay the $1400 for laminate that Lowes priced us at. And I know painting the cabs may be a turn off for some. But, I can't live with them any more. I really can't, lol. I've consulted my realtor, as well. She knows the area, the neighborhood, the block, my house AND my cabs, lol. And she says go for it. She thinks if I can pull it off, it'll only help set ourselves apart from the rest of cookie cutter land :)

You have a very pretty room with a lot of potential. I really like the color and the natural light. I think the piano could be a beautiful focal point. Will it fit between the windows? If so, move the piano between the two windows and put the collage frame over the piano. Move the sofa in front of the window wall and the large blue chair perpendicular to it with the back facing the edge of the wood floor. Then put the ottoman in front of the sofa and chair as a coffee table. Put the entertainment cabinet on the large wall with the wood chair in the corner near the window and the leather chair about where is currently is. I would also move some of the accessories from the top of the entertainment cabinet to the top of the piano - maybe the red vase and a basket. I think the basket table is too light feeling for the other furniture. If it needs to stay in the room, I would move it to the far side of the sofa so it is not as visible from the room's entry point but it will still be functional as an end table. I would also suggest breaking up the pillows. Keep three on the sofa and put one on each chair. If you can't move the tv, I would still recommend the same arrangement but swap the recommended tv and piano positions. For future furniture purchases, I like the idea of a sofa and two chairs also. It will give you a lot of flexibility to have different arrangements. I really like your windows and blinds. I would suggest putting blinds on the quad window too to cut down on glare as you watch tv and to give the windows a more cohesive look.

Very strange my last text is no longer here or maybe it didn't post? I'd written how much I appreciate all the time, thought, research and effort everyone has put in. It has been very helpful. I took the advice of a poster above and after school went to a BM store where I thought they might have a color consultant. They had two very helpful women who suggested after seeing my pictures on this site Wickham Gray for the kitchen and gray mirage for the dining area (it looks like a moss green) Both colors are soothing. The Wicham is similiar to several of the other colors people suggested. I put large sample squares of it up on the soffit over the window and it looks blue. I like it and if my youngest wasn't coming home from college tonight I'd run out and start painting. Instead I'm going to make a comfort food dinner. Homemade mac and cheese along with roasted brussel sprouts and salad. Ever since I found out you can roast the sprouts I'm a big fan of a formerly disliked vegetable. Regarding the fridge-it's actually just a normal size one door fridge and works just fine. Maybe it shines because I gave it a good cleaning after we put down the floor! Cannot justify the expense of replacing it for aesthetic reasons. I have a kitchen cat g-d vertical flag that one of my daughters brought back from Japan and could hang it on the fridge! That should add color. Wishing everyone a great holiday. Thanks again for your help.

I'm not sure about the color choice. And that doesn't mean I don't like it, I just struggle with picking my own colors that I can't help you with this. If you think it will look good, you should give it a try. You can buy a can of sample paint and try it out on a poster board that you can move around the room. A lot of people love the Wyeth Blue and Palladian Blue from BM. They seem like really nice colors.

I totally agree with staining the island dark. You will love that. PLUS, if it looks incredible, you never know what Mr. Lottie might do next! Gel stain for all!!! We call this "Baby Steps". You may secretly have a plan but you give him only what he needs to know. If you like the look, you can secretly manipulate the situation so that Mr. Lottie thinks it was his idea to continue on and do the whole kitchen. Hey, I know a thing or two about expanding projects....lol
