Exact spacing between Kitchen Wall - Island - Great Room

The layout is virutually decided but we're not sure which way we want to go as far as the EXACT spot for the island.

We know and are following the guidelines but as usually there is still play to be had.

We will be creating a 10 x 4 island that will house the sink, and room for 4 guests to sit.

The area in question is the distance we want the island from the carpeted area of the great room. Space is somewhat limited but still plenty of room.

Because we've always had large kitchen triangles (which hasn't really been a positive) it's hard to get over shrinking them down to the standard of 4 feet of aisle across. If we do that we will have 42" of kitchen/hardwood flooring on the other side of the island (adjacent to the great room plus an additional 15" of carpet area before you encounter any furniture (making the "hallway" for the guests 57") while the kitchen is only 48"....seems strange.

We're thinking about pushing the island closer to the great room, but hear over and over about how others like a tighter kitchen area. If this was your kitchen, how much space would you want between your kitchen wall and island versus your island and great room.
