Please help me make decision on cabinets

1/ Pay $2800 to have cabinets prepped and painted white, buy satin nickel and knobs for hinges. Drawback is I have to keep the exposed hinges which I think is outdated.

2/ Pay $5600 to have new cabinet doors and drawers with European hinges and then for the rest of the cabinet such as rail and frame would be painted. Is there a drawback that wood will be solid but made of popular and MDF?

I have a contemporary living room, traditional dining room with maple dinette set. Living , dining and kitchen are all in open area in a rectangular shape.

Any suggestions?

Are your current doors and drawers in excellent condition and in a style that you like? If you love your current cabinetry and think it is good condition, then go ahead and just paint. I know with my cabinets, my doors were in good condition but my drawers were a mess (sticking, sagging etc...) so I will be replacing everything. On option 2, will the be replacing the entire drawer box, or just the face front? If you love the new door and drawer in Option 2 and hate your current door & drawer, this might be your best bet. Also, are your current cabinets white or oak? If they have a lot of knots, the texture will show through even after you paint.

Are you going for a contemporary look in the kitchen?

Have you considered getting all new cabinets at IKEA? There has been a lot of success on this forum with IKEA. Just a thought.

If you are looking for new kitchen cabinets I would highly suggest Wood-Mode Brookhaven .. First Wood-Mode cabinets installed in 1972, updated cabinets in Sept 2007, old cabinets looked as good as the day they were installed but we wanted to update .. Wood-Mode has web site where you can find a dealer in your area, check business records before you contract with a dealer .. If you are looking for wood flooring I would suggest PermaaGrain, they have a web site .. you would buy direct from them .. my daughter is a project manager & has used this flooring in her projects .. great product

In early 1900's kitchen, function would be more important than form. Since the handle is functional and you have been wanting to stick to the look and feel of an 1900's, that is what you should use. I know you are trying to disguise it as a drawer handle but if you think of it as a big heavy drawer, it still makes sense :).

I was very pampered as a child. Toys, dolls, books, you name it, I had it. My Mom saved a few of my Little Golden Books.(The Pokey Little Puppy,The Saggy Baggy Elephant, etc.) She gave them to me to keep when I got married and had a house where I could store them. I think she was de-cluttering more than anything. I held onto them, looked at them once in a while. I eventually had two daughters. When one was a toddler, I gave her one of the books to look at. She started tearing out the pictures! Tried again when both were older and in school (more responsible) but by then they were not interested. They liked their school books better. So I donated all my old books to a local charity (Salvation Army). I went back a few days later and saw them on display. I don't know what happened after that but I knew my kids didn't want them. And I was rid of them without actually throwing them out.Maybe a young mother with little money bought them for her child. At least that's what I'd like to think.

I know nothing at all about inset cabs and I can't tell you what to do. However these two statements stood out: we will be in the house a long time...I have no idea how long, but it could be our "forever home" and we are already building way above the price for the houses in our section of the neighborhood ... I think that's what's getting to me the most. IMO, those two statements negate each other. If you were planning to sell in say, 5 years for example, then you'd probably want to take into account at least an idea of what you might recoup from the remodel. The longer you stay in the house after the remodel, the less the remodel is going to affect salability or the amount you can sell for. In addition, the longer you stay in the house, the more YOU are benefitting and enjoying your remodel. Or conversely, kicking yourself for not getting what you really wanted.

So you are saying that the auto shutoff of which you and the others on this thread are talking about is the feature whereby a hob with a pot on it and the heat turned on will shut itself off after a prescribed period of time at a specific heat level? And it does so when it reaches, say,ten hours? Or eleven? Yes, we are saying that. Because we downloaded and read the manual for the Bosch induction cooktop, and that's what it said. And you dismiss my definition where the hob shuts off simply because it is empty of a pot? You donot consider my scenario as a or the true definitation of auto shutoff? I look forward to simple answers. Nobody is dismissing your definition. As Chanop said, you are correct as well. When you pull the pan off the burner, it will shut off. This is true of all induction cooktops. However, some induction cooktops will automatically shut off after a certain amount of time with a burner on, and a pan present, without anybody touching the controls. This is not voodoo. None of us are guessing or speculating about how the auto shut off works. All of this information is laid out clear as day in the manual, freely available online.

How nice of Joe to join today and plug specific products... This smells a bit SPAMMY. Not that WoodMode doesn't make excellent cabinets -- but add another 0 to the cost of your project.

I don't think the exposed hinges are a big problem, so I'd go by the overall shape and condition of your current doors and cabinets. If they're good - keep 'em and save the money for something more important to you.

I agree: it depends on the condition of your current door and drawers as well as how you like the style. If you like everything but the color, then paint. If that's just a holdover fix, then spring for the extra few grand and get doors and drawers you love.

Also depends on how long you're going to be in the house. The longer you expect to live there, the more worthwhile it is spending to get exactly what you want.

I had a similar dilemma in my last house, but the cabinets were already white. I switched the ugly brass hinges for white ones, and they just disappeared. Then, I spent all my money on a new island. (WoodMode, strangely enough. Hee hee)

I bought the hinges at HD and they were cheap. I even did it myself, and if you knew me you would understand how remarkable that is. I'm the opposite of a DIYer. I can post a pic if you want.

Can you seek around for a local cabinet maker? I am not a fan of MDF and wouldn't want it in my kitchen...you will find some good cabinet makers out there that don't cost an arm and a leg and use only wood products...I paid 8k for a complete kitchen...solid maple/alder (11x14 + island) frames and all..and hidden hinges...I would never have found this maker on my own....I bumped into someone who recommended him and he only works on referrals, never advertises..he's not even in the yellow or white pages! So they're out there..you just need to look!

I also had this choice to make. My cabinets were in good shape so I had them painted and glazed. The hinges I wanted were not cheap so they were spray painted to match the hardware and no one would ever know.
Plus that allowed me to afford the cost of a new island and granite countertops. I'm for saving money wherever possible.
