Clock ticking: please make this decision for me! DW: pull or knob

Ok, I've gotta get this figured out! It's a teeny detail, and I'm stuck! Help!!

Cabinet guy wants to put the DW panel together, but I can't decide knob vs pull (and I have to decide fast, cause the handle goes on before the panel can).

My original design has a knob, so the DW is the same as its "sister cabinet" on the other side of the sink. (Pardon the cardboard drawer fronts that I made) Then, the skinny trash pull-out on the end (next to DW) has a pull. Like this.

But, a pull on the BIG dishwasher would be so much more functional. And the trash cab is so skinny. It looks good with the little knob. So switch em. Like this.

But while this design seems to make more sense, it is different from my original vision of complimentary units on either side of the sink. I'm sure this agonizing over knob vs pull will soon be a forgotten memory. But of course, right now I'm STUCK.

Please unstick me. Which do you think looks better? That's what I really want to know: which looks better? Please make your decision with certainty and authority, so I can just do whatever you tell me and be done with this!

(I hope you tell me that the pull on the DW looks great, b/c that is the "functional choice." No, no, forget I said that!! Do NOT let me influence you! Does the knob look better??? Forget function. It's all about appearance! My gut tells me to go with the pull. AHHHHHH! Be quiet gut! Stop talking to me. *fingers in ears* I'm not listening to you gut. La La La. I can't hear you. i am an extremely symmetrical person, so my 1st instinct was knob. but looking closer, you basically have four spaces there including d/w and sink. so, having a knob on the two "outside ones" is still symmetrical...and functional. :) just one question, though. what will go on the two doors under the sink? if you put knobs there, the pull may then seem more out of place.

I prefer pulls over knobs hands down because of function. As far as looks, both look good in general and either will look good on your cabs. No one, not even you, will notice it one way or another down the road. However, I believe you'll miss the function of a pull on the dishwasher..I think it is much more stable for the use it will get. Go with pull!

I'm so glad it's not only me!!!!! :-) I keep wanting to tell my builder that I am normally a very reasonable person. But I know he wouldn't believe me anyway. At this point, my indecisiveness about cabinets is delaying the whole project! Ugh. I do think, though, that there are many things that make it hard to be decisive: 1. Some of us have never done this before, and there is a LOT to learn. I frequently make a decision only to learn later that there are good reasons not to do it that way. OR I get conflicting information (what's better? particle board or plywood for my cabinet boxes?) and don't have the knowledge base to judge for myself. 2. It's hard to shop when you can't see the prices. How many times have you spent hours finding just the right tile--only to discover days later when you get the quote that this particular tile requires special handling (or whatever) and the labor will now be more than budgeted? Or that the roof shingles you've selected are discontinued in a 30-year and are now only available as a 50-year--which means more expense. Back to the drawing board in both situations. And it can be even harder to find something I like the second time around; after spending so much time finding just the perfect thing, it can be hard to let that go and settle for something else. 3. As someone mentioned above, everything is interconnected. Today, for instance, I am having serious second thoughts about the bathroom tile, after I saw something similar at a friend's house and did not care for it. But if I change my tile color, I will also want to change my vanity stain color. So back I go to the tile store--and the cabinet shop, where the KD will probably shoot me for proposing yet another change. 4. Sometimes things happen that necessitate or encourage a change. For example, the plumber discovered that the plumbing in one bathroom was not up to code. The wall behind the sink had to be opened up, and suddenly I saw the opportunity to put in a new recessed medicine cabinet. But this meant moving an outlet that had just been put in. Or then there was the day that the sheetrock went up and suddenly a different bathroom seemed really dark. So I requested an additional recessed light. The electrician thinks I'm wishy-washy when things like this happen. I think I'm just reacting to changing circumstances. But when I think about the YEARS I spent designing this house, I know that the "indecisiveness" will ultimately get me exactly where I want to be. Yes, it's excruciating to me, to the people working on my house, and to my very patient husband. But everyone agrees that the house so far is flat-out stunning. It took a lot of back-and-forth to get the design just right, and I guess it's just going to take a lot of back-and-forth to get the interior details just right too. Oh, and by the way, about the dark cherry cabinets? I had the same exact conflict when I started this. I always imagined I would get cherry cabinets because it would go well with the dark wood trim in my house. But it wasn't sitting 100% right with me. What finally helped me make my decision was when I took out all of the magazine pages I'd piled up over the years and began narrowing them down. But instead of pulling out pages where I like a particular detail, like I usually do, this time I selected out only the ones where I liked the overall look. At the end I realized, much to my surprise, that out of the 10-12 I loved best, 90% had white painted cabinets. And that was that.

WOW -- you guys have given me so much good stuff to think about. All who pointed out that my inspiration shots don't include any colored tile or other permanent elements other than the wall paint -- that was really eye-opening. So thanks, rob p, buehl, sailormann, lascatx, and debsan. I am now thinking about going a different direction with that element. The white cabinets, white subway tile, and marble counters with a warm green or yellow on the walls, and bringing in color with things like displayed items, and possibly also kitchen table and chairs. @kateskouros: What you describe sounds just lovely. I'm sure your kitchen is going to be beautiful! @elizpiz: I wish I had room for an island, but it was either an island OR a kitchen table. I really wanted the old-fashioned kitchen table, so that's what I'm getting! However, I've yet to buy it, so I will definitely think about a colorful one. And thanks for the attic link. Great pictures there to get ideas from. @chachashea: I can't wait to see pictures when your kitchen is done! Another thought I've had is that I am getting one custom-built cabinet piece, which will sit next to the table and house things like laptop and TV, with cubbies for mail and bills and magazines and such. I was going to ask the GC to paint it white to match the cabinets, but now I wonder if I should have it painted yellow or green (whichever I don't paint the walls). That might be really nice. As much as I love white cabinets, my eye is always drawn in pictures to the painted pieces in old kitchens too. Now for the backsplash -- I wonder if it would be too boring just to continue the white subway tile and paint, and then mix it up a little bit higher up on the wall with a picture, or a starburst clock, or something like that. One thing I'm still mulling too is whether the white subway tile should go all the way up between counter and cabinet, or stop short to expose paint color. What do you all think? Too "unfinished" without pencil or cap tile in black or another color, or could this work where the tile is all white? Thanks so much again! Liz

Angie DIY - the pricing IS closer together and we could make it closer still by reusing the dishwasher. It was over $6000 difference. Now it's a little over $3200 difference (in part due to floor model hood) and if we resuse the dishwasher it's more like $2200. It's all about how the packaging pricing works. We can't reuse the dishwasher in the Thermador option as it's part of the package although we would get a new dishwasher for less than half the price of the one we would get with the Wolf/ SZ package price. We are not buying these items seperately. There are promotions and discounts based on which pieces you buy. We can't just mix and match as you suggest. youngdeb, thanks for your post! great to know you are happy with the Thermador. We are waiting to get a Thermador quote from the same appliance store today. If they come in significantly below our existing Thermador quote we will probably stick with Thermador - the question is at what price difference we would flip over to the Wolf/SZ? I guess at over $6000 difference in package pricing we were definitely ready to go with the Thermador package. At $2200 difference it is much less cut and dry. We have to decide what our cut off point is and that is tough!

Just found this thread again but wanted to weigh in on trader_deb's question . . . We made the decision to use 2 handles on all our drawers 30" or larger mainly for aesthetics as it was more pleasing to *our* eyes that way. Otherwise, our cabinets just seemed too stark and bare . . . the handles are a bit like jewelery and dress the empty cabinet face up a bit. :-) We have Blum hardware on our drawers and don't have the slightest problem opening the larger drawers with only one of the two handles, even in areas where they are loaded with heavy items (like under the cooktop where our pots and pans are stored). It really comes down to personal preference. I always advise people to look at pics of kitchens online and in magazines and pick out handle configurations that appeal to them (and make note of those that don't). It can really help take the guess work out of what will be a pleasing result for you in the end.

The pull looks good there and it doesn't have to match the other side just b/c you have a knob there. A pull is more expected on a door this size, and as much as you'll be opening it, you be happy to have more to grab on to. The knob on the DW door looks lost to me. As for the trash bin, the knob works there for balance (if that's what you're trying to achieve) even though it's not NEXT to the sink. That's my 2 cents.

I'm with Glad. To me, putting the knob on the trash actually pulls it into the grouping, rather than setting it aside by making the DW and left hand drawer the same. And the handle is more functional on the DW.

Which is a wordy way of saying my first instinct: I like the looks of option 2 better anyway :)

Function aside the pull looks better on the dishwasher because of it's size. The knobs look better on the thinner doors. So IMHO form and function agree that the pull belongs on the dishwasher. ; )

I agree with those who said put the pull on the dw, the knob on the trash. Great reasons for all- the knob on the trash pulls it into the unit, the pull on the dw works visually because its a wider drawer, and functionally the pull on the dw is much better.

My last home had a paneled DW, and it took quite a yank to open the DW. I was very glad it had a pull on it, or I'm afraid I would have yanked the knob right out of the panel! It also feels good ergonomically. That knob is just too small to pull such a large/heavy door open.

In early 1900's kitchen, function would be more important than form. Since the handle is functional and you have been wanting to stick to the look and feel of an 1900's, that is what you should use. I know you are trying to disguise it as a drawer handle but if you think of it as a big heavy drawer, it still makes sense :).

I echo everyone else's sentiments...pull on DW, knob on trash pullout.

Not to add to your agony, but I wonder if a full or almost full trash bin will be just as heavy to pull out as a DW door? I guess it depends on what's in it...mostly paper and lightweight stuff is probably fine.

I have the exact same set up as you. As you said, I thought a knob to match up, but my DH said he thought the weight could be a problem where it is opened so much. I did the knob on the trash cabinet, and the cup pull on the Dishwasher. I think it look great.
