I'm In Kitchen Decisions Purgatory -- Please Help!!

I was going to say I was in kitchen decisions hell, but realized that if that were so, I would already be at my (albeit awful) destination instead of being stuck in limbo! Hi all, I am new to posting but have been lurking here for a while. I am awed and impressed by the depth of thoughtfulness and knowledge I have seen on this forum, so am hoping maybe you can all help me with these kitchen decisions.

"Simple," I thought. "I'll get a new kitchen, with lots of counter space and cabinets," I thought. "Oh yes, and it will be beautiful too," I thought. "Oh, and I won't spend a fortune either," I thought.

So anyway, now here I am, coming down to decisions. I have picked out my cabinets (finally!) They are going to be white painted maple with a simple square recessed panel. http://www.kraftmaid.com/doorsfinishes/index.cfm?navigationid=312X0&doorstyleid=52

I am thinking of having honed carrara marble countertops, and after obsessively reading threads about marble here and elsewhere, I think I can live with the etching and enjoy it and love it.

I also love the look of the white subway tile with the above. An inspiration picture for me is http://www.newoldhousemag.com/features/summer06/images/CK-25.jpg

So here is where the purgatory comes in. I also want to have definite bursts of color in the kitchen. I love the simplicity and beauty of the white, but I don't want it to be a formal-seeming all-white kitchen, more old-fashioned or retro is what I am going for. I love colors like jadeite green, warm yellows and even turquoise and wonder if there is a way to incorporate them into the above without having it turn it to be too much of a weird-looking mishmash, if you know what I mean. Another inspiration picture for me is the "after" shot here:http://www.hashai.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/before_after.jpg

I love that mix of classic and retro-modern. We are going to get those little open rounded shelves you see in that picture.

One option I thought of was to run a line of "pencil" tile through the white subway tile, sort of like they did in old bungalows or like you sometimes see in bathrooms. You see it here in the black tile. Only mine would be in some color, like jadeite green or yellow or ??

Or would it make more sense to go with a colored subway tile, such as http://www.modwalls.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=11

Or is there some other option I am not thinking about at all?? My head is swimming trying to think about how to get this right ... I have never had the chance to do a kitchen renovation before and we plan to stay in this house a long time. I don't want to hate my kitchen every day!!

Any thoughts and suggestions are VERY welcome, including design ideas and sourcing ideas. Oh, and I haven't even gotten around to asking for backsplash ideas yet. I thought I had that all figured out and then that idea turned out to be unworkable ((sigh)). Thanks so much in advance for any and all responses!
