Creamy white cabinets, oak floors, and brown suede granite?

I went granite shopping today. I know which ever I choose, it will look great- but...first I was going with leathered black, then switched to bianco romano, then to gaillo ornamental, and today the lady at granite place showed me brown suede. WHAT IS MY PROBLEM? I just can't picture it done, and I guess I'm not sure what overall look I'm going for. I love the white with the soapstone or black. But decided I wanted something "warmer". Kitchen is pretty big with lots of counter space and a 4x8 island. What is your opinions of these granites?

did you bring home samples to see them in the light at your house? This can help with your decision. I was convinced I wanted a dark granite. But none looked good with the natural light. We ended up going lighter, Bianco Antico.

You will know when it is right. You are right, so many look good, but only one will make your heart sing and beat a little faster. Good Luck

What about breaking up the counter expansiveness with 2 different granites. One on the perimeter and one on the island. Maybe the brown suede on the island and the ornamentale on the perimeter. (I'm not sure about the browns but it's an option.) maybe the granite place could show you some different pairings.

Hi Tara, Thanks for the kind words! The design was a labor of love and I second-guessed myself so much I nearly went crazy! So thank you. And yes, those old ceiling fixtures were doozies, weren't they? My husband bought the house without me seeing it (cross-country move and me too pregnant to travel) and those lights were my least-favorite surprise when we moved in... The window treatment is a new addition -- went in just days before Christmas. The treatment over the sink is a faux-shade -- that is, it doesn't really go up or down, because I had had blinds there before and never moved them. On the windows by the table I have roman shades in the same fabric, lined with heavy fabric b/c we need light control there. All were custom made by a woman in Northern Virginia. The fabric is "Paddock Shawl" by Waverly; the color is "Porcelain." Please feel free to email me if you have more questions! Amy

Still debating the whole granite situation. We are getting stained cherry cabinets (not sure how to describe the color, except that it is fairly dark), so I want to get a granite that is not too dark. I love the granite colors that lsander and glad posted. We saw something similar at a granite place, but it was a bit pricey. We need to make our decision soon! I will let you know what we decide. skeetie219, This kitchen from the finished blog looks similar to what you are describing - very pretty: http://finishedkitchens.blogspot.com/2005/06/artteachernjs-kitchen.html I've looked at a couple of granite yards this week. I liked Golden Beach, Giallo Ornamentale, Delicatus, Madura Gold, Lapidus, Taupe, Also gorgeous was a combo of Antique Brown on the perimeter (looks almost black) and danby marble on the island - stunning! I didn't see any nice versions of Santa Cecelia or New Venetian Gold, which although very common would also work well - have seen much nicer in photos here on GW than in person. My problem is that I need a fairly large slab for the island - not so easy to find them!

Yeah, same here, like it's a dolomite or marble. You get so tired of looking, you're like "I don't care any more!!" lol. Actually, it's not funny. It's a true investment that gets used daily...so it DOES need to hold up and endure. I too am a messy cook and am a person that doesn't mind if something sits on the countertop for a few hours esp when you're having a party -- what's on my countertop is my least concern!

I just noticed that you have creamy white cabinets - we do as well and used the giallo ornamental. We needed the lighter counter (lots of rainy cloudy days) but I wanted the dark browns so that I could integrate a dark stained peninsula into my design. Sort of the best of both worlds.

beekeeperwife: I saw the pictures of your kitchen- beautiful. Now I am leaning toward the lighter granite! I'm going to get a piece of bianco antico also. then I'll be more confused. But I think you are right- I'll know it when I see it in my light.
byronroad, Did you post pictures of your kitchen? I'd love to see it. I will have the dining table in the area- and it will be dark brown wood- so our colors will be similar. Maybe I will put the brown granite on the island- I'll talk to the granite lady- she was very helpful. Thanks for the input! Decisions, decisions!

No, nothing posted yet as that is definitely beyond my computer skills. We moved back into the house Mid-september and kids had already started back at university with no time to help dear old mom. I'll have to wait until December when exams are finished, and if there is a poor ski day maybe I can bribe them, I mean, ask them nicely if they can help me with that. I would love to get them posted!

I had a hard time picking between light and dark too.
My cabinets are creamy with brown glaze, my floor is dark (hazelnut) my island is a brownish cherry.

Then I started to think in "pieces". When I look at the floor, what do I see, then my eyes move up to the cabinets (which are light), then the counter, then the upper cabinets.
Do I want to see a slab that "blends" or one that "pops". One with movement or one that is consistent.

After getting a few opinions, I decided on some movement and a granite that popped.

My granite was installed yesterday, and OMG I love it. I don't have a photo yet, but here's a general one of the granite I choose. (Pegasus)

You really should look at cabinet mfgs. catalogs and magazine, decide which look you like - light, blended or dark. Which kitchen appealed to you first and stuck. Then pick your stone. This website has alot of photo's - look around.
