Should i avoid these genera?
Comments (4)Ca you create a way theta they could get filtered light with a shade clot of a taller bush. Many cactus grow in the shade of a rock or a thin taller bush/tree. One could get a wispy type of acacia that could create some shade. I grow my rebutia in morning sun in the hot Texas sumer. I water mine about once a week and it gets hot. around and above 100 a lot. I think it is a shade issue....See MoreShould I try to avoid butting 2 deck boards on 1 joist?
Comments (5)David, As John said, you shouldn't overthink a pressure treated deck, as it won't look good for very long anyway. That said, you can still build it well and be proud of it when you're finished. I build higher end, using Ipe for decking, and this is how I frame for butt joints. I stagger the joints, and create a repetitive pattern. I sister joists wherever a joint happens, so each board lands on it's own joist. Butt joints are always problematic...I work with a caliper and a table saw to make sure that I butt 2 boards that have exactly the same width. You'll find out that 5/4x6 really means 1"x5 3/8 or maybe 1"x5 1/2". I rip the wider board to the same width of the smaller. Then there's the cut...the 2 boards need to meet at a tight joint. It's not easy, so I round over the tops of both cuts. It's more forgiving. If there's a slight gap, you won't notice it. Anyway, there is a lot to deck building that you can obsess about, but do you want to? I do, because I like to...I need to. Back to your question...I sister the joists together...no 1/2 gap. steve...See MoreHow to tell if something is a trend or not
Comments (19)If you like them, that's what matters as far as the lines...and I think it's interesting that your sofa arm and dining chair back, both angle out in the same way. Therefore, you must be attracted to that look. The quality of furniture is harder to tell, unless you get underneath and look at how it's constructed. Does it have good quality fasteners, or just glued? Are there reinforcing pieces on the chair legs, or are they solid enough not to need them? Is the sofa hand-tied, how good is the quality of the foam/cushion? These are things that a furniture salesperson should be able to show you and explain to you....yes, I did this for a brief time. LOL If you still aren't sure about these things, go to a store that sells Ethan Allen or Thomasville furniture...and look at the way the furniture is constructed. Go ahead and ask one of the salespeople to explain it to you. If these pieces are out of your price range, at least you'll learn more about furniture and maybe see one splurge piece that you'd like to add, later. While I do have an armoire at Ethan Allen I've been looking at for years, all of my favorite pieces came from antique stores and thrift shops. They've all held up beautifully and are very well constructed...otherwise, they wouldn't have made it to the antique store :) As for colors, styles, design, etc. as someone said earlier, stick with neutral colors on the big pieces and keep your color on accessories. Unless you have a really tall ceiling, it's easier to paint the walls, then reupholster furniture. Color is a fun way to define your style, but you'll probably be happier with a neutral sofa, or a couple of fun slipcovers!...See MoreShould I Avoid Spraying the Side of My House with Hard Water?
Comments (5)In short: Yes. In long: Sorry. Anywhere there is hard water, you will eventually get hard water stains. It's a function of the water minerals, not the windows, siding, or anything else. Do what you can to protect your home from the water inside and outside. If you can put a filter on your system that would be ideal. Be sure your lawn sprinklers, if any, are adjusted to avoid anything but greenery. If you need to wash the outside of your home, try to do it before a good rain so the hard water is diluted. Ask your medical practitioner the pros and cons of drinking hard water....See Moresas95
