I think you should ask the fabricators what they normally do just in case there are options you haven't considered, but I think that having the 4" strip of splash going across would be great. It shouldn't be difficult for them. If the run isn't too long, a piece that continues the whole length, with no seams, would be ideal. If a seam is required, you probably want it away from the stove, because that area will get a lot of attention.

Nowadays you can do whatever you want and it'll be fine. If you don't plan on also doing tile or something else back there, I think 4" (or 3....or 6) is a good idea to protect the wall, but you're probably more careful than I am. I guess the 4" is pretty old-fashioned. But it still looks OK. Some people do a really skinny strip, which also looks good with a big chunk to fill the entire area behind the stove.

I do think that common sense as well as habit makes us want to see at least as much splash if not MORE splash behind the stove than elsewhere on counters because it's a messy area. So whatever you do, don't go with a smaller splash behind the stove!

More people these days tend to tile the backsplash right down to the counter top - in that case they tend not to get the 4" backsplash.

buffettgirl....yes, they will put a strip of granite behind your stove and most likely support it with some sort of wood ledge that they'll nail right below it. Then, they'll put your backsplash on top of that. It should look as though your granite continues behind your stove.

You could continue the 4" behind the stove and, depending on the granite you chose, you might also consider doing the same granite, only in tile up the wall behind the stove. It would give you more splatter protection. I have a cooktop, but here's a pic of mine. HTH.

FWIW, last night on DIY channel Kitchen Renovations show, they had my very situation - 4" backsplash on either side of the stove and nothing behind. They ended up tiling back there, but to me it looked odd having the stone (in this case quartz) end on either side of the stove. Hope this works, you can just barely see the backspash on either side but it looks odd to me. (not to say I don't like the tile, it's quite attractive actually)

I agree, buffettgirl--that looks like they didn't think it out, and yet I'm sure they did. It's not like their design would have been affected negatively if they went across. Of course, with their tile design, I think it'd look even better to use a stripe of the colored tile (or left it with the plain tile) instead of the 4" black material...

I chose to have a 4 inch granite backsplash but it stops at the side of the slide in range, which doesn't have a console in the back. We are doing beadboard for backsplash except for a tin ceiling panel behind the range. It will all be painted cream.
There is a small strip of granite counter top behind the range. HTH Sue

I'm putting in a 4" backsplas but haven't decided on what to do behind drop-in range. I'm thinking of putting in a slab behind the range.

My 20" SS riser is a Wolf. I have the 36"DF with the 20" SS Riser with the shelf. I have a 4" granite backsplash around the rest of the Kitchen. I should be able to post pictures in the next few weeks.
