Am I just being stubborn...

about the hutchlike cabinets on the counter? I just feel like I am fighting against them in my design. If I kept all the cabinets on the stove wall at regular length, I wouldn't have to worry about X amount of counterspace on either side of the range, or getting the right width proportionally to the height....and I don't think the lack of symmetry to the left and right of the range would be as noticeable either. Part of me thinks I should stick to my guns, and I appreciate all the suggestions people here have given me to make this work, but I'd love for someone to play devil's advocate and tell me I should scrap the counter sitting cabinets, that it will be just as pretty with all wall hanging ones. (of course I'd equally love to have someone reassure me that the design is just fine the way it is!

One more idea ...what if I switched around the glass versus closed cabs, so that I would have double door hanging glass cabs on either side of the hood and single door closed cabs on the far left and right running to the counter? Does that help the look/proportions in any way? I'm not sure why it would, but I was looking through the pictures of black and white kitchens in atticmag.com and I saw it done this way and it looked really nice.

I wouldn't want the glass fronts right next to the stove...grease spatters.

And I've already told you my opinion that I think you should stick to what you've been fighting so hard to have and make work. (How many posts have you had about to-the-counter uppers, so that you can figure out how to get them just right? I don't ask to make fun, but to point out how important they are to you.) Really, it will look great. You can leave things as is, or move the range 3 inches and do what Mom2lilenj suggested, and have both tall cabs at 21". Again, it's going to be great, and when it's in, unless you let yourself 2nd guess, no one will question how it looks, because the beauty will overtake them! ;-)

booberry is right on tomatoes not setting in extreme heat. I have found that morning sun is the best for tomatoes (and other vegetable plants as well), so try to have the tomatoes out in the morning sun. When it has been upper 90's here, I have allowed the tomatoes to get full sun in the morning, then provided shade to them about midday until around 4:00 PM. After 4 PM, the sun wasn't quite as strong and I uncovered the plants. It seemed to help them, and they still received about 8 hours of sunlight. Also make sure you are watering them probably twice a day if they are in containers in that kind of heat. The curled leaves (the lower few limbs are curling?) is usually a sign of stress, but normally will not effect production unless the stress gets serious. I hope this helps, and good luck. Tee

...so I hope herbal ordered more than the one plant mentioned. Male seaberry plants tend to single-trunks and go straight up. Females are all over the place, especially newer varieties (that is, not the German varieties offered since the 1990's). The potted seaberries on sale at garden shows are all very upright; bare-root stuff pulled out of storage can be pretty funky. Perhaps the nursery sales policies will give you time to plant it and see if it grows well next spring.

Oh man! Im sorry to rub it in, everyone. I know most of you are just buried in snow, with no end in sight. If its any consolation, we have had rain. And rain. And rain. Snow for a minute. Then more rain. *yawn* Sooo boring. Yep the seeds are commercial. Botanical Interests, purchased in December. Im pretty sure they are viable. I'm just paranoid, since this is my first attempt and all. I must just learn to trust it! Heh..wouldn't that be something if that one little sprout was a weed. Imagine how foolish I would feel if I coddled that thing all through spring, planted it out, and it ended up spreading everywhere! Not that ANYONE here has done that before. *whistles* Steff ;)

I finally got to read your whole post. I bet you are feeling like tearing your hair out because she sure doesn't seem to value your time or that you have other things to do. I am so sorry. My dad will be 91 in July and had hip/femur surgery in November and, sadly, it just hasn't healed. The next step is a partial hip replacement with a titanium rod inserted in the femur. What I have noticed is that on the days he has pain he can't seem to hand me his lunch or dinner plate or mail in order for me to clean up. I think it is a mental decision that they can't do the simplest of things. I think contacting any senior centers or any senior programs available through government services might be a great start. There are organizations that will take your mom grocery shopping or to appointments if they are fairly local. Some charge, some take donations and some are totally free. Many grocery stores have online ordering and will deliver to her home for a fee. That could be a lifesaver for sure. Do insist on being in charge of her calendar or you won't be able to attend or drive. She cannot make decisions for you when you are the ride. Let us know what you have decided to do and know that we all support you and most have gone through (or are going through) similar situations. The is a great place to vent! Robyn

I wouldn't compromise on this. I think what you have now will be beautiful even if they aren't perfectly symmetrical.

I really like the hutch sort of cabs-- they are just so not-typical.

If you can afford to loose the counterspace, I'd definetly go for it.

If you can afford the countertop space then I would keep them if not: bye bye. Only you can decide what you think you will need but I wouldn't ignore the practical.

Caryscott, no, counterspace is the least of my problems. Between the island and the peninsula, I have counter space as far as the eye can see. And even with the hutches I have 27" of free counter space on either side of the range. It's more an issue of struggling to get the dimensions and proportions just right. The corner turn to the peninsula and the $#(%*)@#$ load bearing wall are really the problems. But, I am going to stick with the hutches, and not second guess. I promise! Thanks, rhome and mom2lilenj. I meet with the kd tomorrow...we might even be able to finalize and actually order the darn things.
