layout thoughts - sudden change of plans?

So my cabinet maker threw a monkey wrench into all my plans yesterday. This is my current layout:

{{!gwi}}

That big gap between the fridge and the cabinets is a doorway that is a short cut to the bathroom and our bedroom. The cabinet maker suggested closing off that door and going with a more traditional u-shaped. If we did that, we could move the stove from its current position across the room. The appeal of this (for me) is that we get the traffic flow out of the work space. The part I don't like is that to get to the washroom and the bedroom, we would have to walk through the dining room, then to the end of a 30 ft hallway. Besides, closing off doors just seems wrong.

If I went with the u-shaped kitchen, the only arrangement I could think of would have to have the fridge at either end of the "U"... which would mean you would enter the kitchen right beside it. I find this feels like you are entering a tunnel (very closed in feeling).

Does anybody have any thoughts?
