Hi, I just think with the arched door it reads more old fashioned. Especially with the routed detail of the panels. I would think any panel number would be appropriate, just what ever number you like. When I think contemporary I think cleaner edges of the stiles and rails, without the rounded edges. I think there are examples of very clean doors on the link I provided. I like the first door for instance. There are also doors shown that I wouldn't think of as contemporary, but I am not a designer. You could post over in the decoration forum. What did you end up doing? If you are still deciding, I would advise against a 4 panel door for your 10 foot space. As another poster said, that will result in a lot of posts within a small area. The result will be less glass and a more crowded look. Once you factor in all the posts required for a 4 panel door, and the large section in the middle where the two closing panels meet, you will loose a lot of light and your opening will not actually be that much larger than a 3 panel door. I think 3 panels would work very well and, after allowing for the posts, will leave you with an opening that is around 3 foot wide. A 36" opening is very respectable - also, you will then only have one moving panel which equals less moving parts (see: things that may/will break some day) and only one screen door. A 4 panel door will generally be less weather resistant: two moving panels must join in the middle and try to create a seal with one another, which weakens the door's structure. this counts when a storm kicks up and you get a lot of wind driven rain. with a 3 panel door, each end of the moving panel will always close/seal against a FIXED panel. This is more stable and reliable. i'm not making this up - check the DP rating of a 3 panel door Vs. a 4 panel door for the same manufacturer. The 4 panel doors always have a lower rating. Another negative score against the 4 panel door is that you are forced to have the opening in the center of your room - which makes it difficult to furnish, as you must allow a passage way through the center of a room. Not an efficient use of space in many situations. 3 panels allow the flexibility to have the opening on the left, center, or right side. I'm not an authority on this... just my opinion :-) Good luck! I'm in a situation much like yours: 70's brown doors that don't match anything with a long narrow hallway. What I did in the interim is paint the hallway a deep rust, which makes the doors disappear. Next year will be the Year of New Trim for me. I'm very excited! The thing about this kind of space is that the more you have going on, the smaller and more cramped the space feels. So you need to have simple lines, flat planes and monochrome colour. In your case, because the floor tile is patterned, the rest of the space needs to be very subdued. That's not to say you can't have arches on your door panels-- but 2 panel which is less busy than 6 panel is a better choice. And rather than having wainscot, have simple but substantial (think 5-6" ) baseboards and door casings. Woodwork and doors should be the same colour as the walls, but in a slightly glossier sheen. If you really want wainscotting, save it for your dining room where there will be space to admire it. The style you prefer is more baroque than the current fashion but by no means tacky if well-executed.

For posterity: Eurowall has a max-panel width of 96" or a whopping 8' per panel (although there's some weight limitations that might make this not work for 2 panel applications). It looks like the 2 panel depth is < 5". Arcadia has a lift-slide door (tsx6000) allowing up to 6 ft per panel (covers 12' total w/ 2 panel) and can work with ~5" exterior walls. Weiland looks like they got bought by Andersen. Andersen has a max of 108 for a 2 panel with their e-series gliding door. So they're out for this width. Fleetwood supports 76" panel width (6.3') with their 3 series sliders and looks like it'll fit with "standard" exterior walls. Now off to get some quotes ...
