6 Panel Doors

Can I collect everyone's thoughts on painting 6-panel doors black thru out a 2 Story American Foursquare home? Wall paint grey or beige? Trim white or black? Just not a good idea at all? Please send me your thoughts on this topic!

I adore black painted doors as well as black painted furniture but it has IMO a major downside and that is that dust shows very quickly on it. My black glass-topped stove needs daily dusting every morning! And my painted black kitchen cabinets need much more frequent wiping than I've ever done with wood tones or other color cabinets. I don't even live in a dusty area, can't imagine the extra work if I did.

If you don't mind the maintenance and love the look I say go for it!

Molded door so no true floating panels, therefor caulking will not be necessary. I would select the same paint/finish for the doors as used for the jamb and trim. That is personal, for appearance, not a necessity. I use a semi-gloss enamel. Not familiar with the paint you reference. Make certain the surfaces are clean and free of any oil. Wash with Dirtex, or similar, if necessary. You might find that a foam roller will give you a smooth finish but you'll still need a brush for the 6-panel inside edges and the edges of the door itself. A good quality paint will self-level, just don't rework following application. Yes, personally I prefer to paint doors flat, resting on horses as I have a better chance of eliminating runs. I do two light coats a day apart, flip the door and do the reverse side. I remove the hinges and knobs/mechanism too - less trimming. I'm sure one of the pros can offer some techniques but I don't paint doors often so the above has served me well. Hope this helps, enjoy the new bathroom.

I would go with 2 panel. Unless a 6 panel door is custom made with trim in all six of the panels or vintage, I think they look cheap, even the solid core ones. We recently bought a house and the first thing we did was replace all of the six panel solid core doors because even though they were higher end, they just looked too faux to us. We replaced them with salvaged vintage doors.

I think it depends a little on what the panels on the doors look like. They could be shaker style, traditional, modern, or something else I haven't listed. They could be very rustic/cabiny! The style of the panels would guide my decision. If they're shaker style, I would look for some shaker trim designs. If they are traditional, with several grooves in the panels, I would consider something more elaborate. I hope that helps!

Cpartist, the house is craftsman style, east coast cottage/bungalow, with wide front porch, low pitched roof lines, exposed ceiling beams, thick moldings and trim, and tons of woodwork throughout (we researched and found that the wood is cypress from the builder's property - decades ago). Pecky cypress too. She was quite neglected when we found her, and we are keeping/using every piece of the wood. Yes, the original 6 panel doors are beautiful and traditional. The doors are for the bedrooms, closets, and bathrooms. We just want the doors to be true to the style of the house in the remodeling of our forever home. Those are just as true to the house as a shaker style door. My 1898 house had different doors upstairs from downstairs. In fact upstairs there were also 2 different original style doors. All your doors need are glass knobs.

If you plan on moving from that house, black doors will definitely hurt resale opportunities. I would not touch them with paint...but them I really like original woodwork in FourSquares. I stripped the paint from 7 doors and all the trim in the hallway the doors entered to.

i'd modify the shade of paint to get a color that blends well with the wood.
