Love at first sight for this backsplash at the coffee bar(!)

Upon seeing this standing pebble tile in a kitchen magazine, I just knew I had to have it. My contractor put it in on Friday, and it was truly love at first sight. Thank goodness for the 'Resource' section of all those kitchen and home and garden magazines. This backsplash was easy to find and purchase online with the help of the resource guide.

I'll post the rest of the 'coastal' inspired kitchen soon. Still waiting on the finishing touches. But, this backsplash had all eyes waiting to see what it would look like.

A home run. I highly recommend it.

Very pretty! I look forward to seeing the rest of the kitchen. Is the backsplash grouted or do they grout the standing pebble?

Hi, I dunno where you are in France, but if you're in the northern part of France (Loire valley and farther north), you should be able to find real slate tiles intended for outdoor terrace/patio paving in any DIY store. I do not see why you could not use those as a backsplash. If you're in the south, it is almost impossible to find slate as it is not considered a local material ... If you're looking for a better selection of tiles than the ones at Castorama and Leroy-Merlin, you should look at stores that are specialized in tiles and sanitaryware (here in Paris area, they are called CMR or Espace Aubade). I personnaly think that a slate backsplash would provide too much contrast ... I would look for a white/cream tile with a matte finish but an interesting texture (like the "Clays" series for Casamood) or something that evokes concrete ('Zoom' from Villeroy&Boch, 'Masterplan' from Lea Ceramiche in 'Grigio' shade), or glass mosaic with metallic effects (Vetro Metallico from Casamood). The later would recall the mettalic touch of your countertops ... I think one of the things that ends up missing in a lot of discussions about backsplashes, is that they are supposed to be easier to clean and more durable than a painted wall, and a painted wall is fairly easy to clean and pretty durable. I think the argument that a backsplash is needed because you are going to splash things on it gets a little weaker when the backsplash is stone or mosaic that is primarily ornamental and would be susceptible to stain and water absorption without sealing it. My gym recently updated the showers with stone tile and mosaic. They removed tile showers that were probably 60 years old. The stone requires a lot more maintenance, isn't as bullet proof as glazed tile, and, since they are used heavily, you can tell when they need to be resealed: they smell bad, like a combination of mold and mildew, and they feel slimy. I don't take showers there anymore. Not that this is going to happen to a residential kitchen backsplash---but my point is that a good paint would probably be just as good a backsplash from a functional standpoint as cleft stone. This sort of backsplash veers into the Ornamental category. As for the 1" backsplash not Adding anything to the look. I agree, but it doesn't subtract much from the look either: it's there primarily for function.

Thank you everyone! I'm so happy to have found this cream....after looking at so many different ones! Here is the info: From the sample board.... Manhatten Series MN11/B36 Cream 3X6 beveled edge Best yet, the price is just $4.68 per sq foot! Honestly, I've been looking at tiles that range from $6-$31 per square foot. To think that my very favorite is under $5 really amazes (and delights!) me! I can't wait to post photos of the finished project....right now I have to order more switchplate covers!

I think I am open to either glass or ceremic right now. Maybe that grayish taupe would work best, I will try to ask for that color tomorrow at a tile store. And I agree that the 3 X 3 would look good, I also thought about going even smaller? But I think my color choices and finishes get smaller. As you can tell I also want to avoid going for too much of a country look. lukkiirish, I did consider that but my husband is against it and I also included a picture of the mantel which is across the room from the bar area. I would have to stain that too, and I was hoping I was almost done with this project. :)

Amylucey, love it, is it dry stacked?

Also, looking at your pictures, can you tell me what the hardware is in the picture showing two different kinds? Noticeably, the bottom one, which looks almost black.

Lyno: No, they don't grout the tile. It's up there - believe me - I think they used the suggested adhesive. The company is called "Design 4 Less" and on their site you can see all kinds of inspirational pictures of the standing pebble. They use this type of tile in outdoor showers a lot... amazing. There is no water at the coffee bar, so it gets low splash possibilities.

Susied3: The hardware in that picture is actually from Lowes and it's from a company called "Atlas Homewares". I was SURE i was going to use it - I LOVED it (and so affordable). In fact, I think I posted a whole thing about finding it and passed on the good fortune. The color is actually dark brown, but looks black against most surfaces. It's really pretty.

I had my mother put it in her kitchen, she has oak cabs and while it looks nice, i think it would be smashing against white or cream.

The pulls are gorgeous. The knobs, eh... so so, but I had found others that matched fine and would have used. As you can see, I used a different set of hardware all together - antique weathered nickel (and those cup pulls on the coffee bar are Dakoda pulls from Restoration Hardware). The glass knobs are from Lowes.

Amylucey, I followed your link, looked at (and loved) the other pictures of your weathered wood wall finish, then posted a question on your earlier posting about the paint color. That posting is now scrolling onto old pages so I'm hoping you see this and then look for the old one. I am loving your choices and can't wait to see the whole thing!
