Formica or Wilsonart?
Comments (24)I am one of the few who like laminates. We recently did a DIY refacing in our kitchen. We looked at all different types of counter tops and decided on premium laminate. The durability and ease of care is what convinced us. Granite is beautiful, but I didn't want to seal it, solid surface scratches too easily, not practical in my much used/lived in kitchen.. We went with Formica fx180, their premium line in antique mascarello. I also love Wilsonart HD, but they didn't have the color I wanted. The Wilsonart has a higher gloss to it than the Formica fx180, which I did like and probably would have purchased if it came in the pattern/color I wanted. It is true that premium laminate is not much cheaper than solid surface or the lower priced granites, but it works for our family and I am happy with it. Both Formica and Wilsonart will send you larger samples for free if you go to their websites to order them. The Formica was a large 12 x 12 size sample, (The wilsonart was a 4 x 5 think) This sample still comes in handy, I take it with me when I go to pick out paint and backsplash tiles. And I did test it, scratching it with sandpaper, knives, brillo, etc, its tough stuff! The sheet laminate is not expensive, its the installing that costs. But if you can get it in a preformed counter top that might be cheaper. Still, for us it was the right choice, my last kitchen's laminate was 28 yrs old and was still in great shape and it took plenty of abuse from our 3 kids, the durability and ease of care and cleaning is what helped me to choose laminate again.....See MoreWilsonart Laminate Countertops
Comments (25)I posted my counters and kitchen photos previously in this thread. My countertop installer highly recommended that I NOT install a typical laminate backsplash. After my counter was installed, I applied a bead of clear silicone. After my DH installed beaded-board paneling as our backsplash, I again applied a silicone seal where the paneling met the counter. We finished off the transition with a piece of waterproof quarter-round molding. I haven't had any issues with water, although I have accidentally flooded that area behind my sink a couple of times. I just wick the water away with a paper towel. Concerning the shine, my counters don't seem to have as much shine in person as they do in photos, probably because the flash of the camera bounces off the counter....See MoreWilsonart laminate
Comments (7)I have oiled soapstone and love it. I planned on black absoulte granite but we got to the end and I didn't want to spring for it because we were renovating the entire downstairs. I read several reviews on this forum about the oiled soapstone and thought it would be good product I could put up with in lieu of the granite. However, I honestly love the the countertops. I had in mind to change to granite in a couple of years, but I'm not sure I ever will...at least until the kitchen needs an overhaul in the far future. The last time I had formica was in the late 1980s...it has REALLY come a long way. I was able to get large scrap pieces from the place I ordered the countertop from. it was a local privately owned business as opposed to a big box store. They keep large scraps from previous jobs for potential buyers to see. Also you can call Wilsonart's 800 number and order a larger sample of any of their products. I think the fee is $1.00. It's not as large as a scrap sample, but much better than the 2 x 2 square you probably have....See MoreFinishes you love/hate in Formica or Wilsonart counters?
Comments (15)We are going with Wilsonart winter carnival in our kitchen. I'm a little worried about how busy it is but at least it won't show stains, my biggest frustration with our current laminate. For the new house we were going to go with quartz or granite but finally decided that we would put more into the cabinets themselves and save on the countertop, a decision I'm pretty happy with. Granite here is 2x the price and quartz is nearly 3x. Jannicone: I almost got the Formica version of the boomerangs for my laundry room but settled on Greek Key in charcoal. (Jonathan Adler 9494) I think it will be fun with white cabinets, white appliances, and gray floors. I REALLY wanted the Formica Jonathan Adler charcoal malachite (9496) but the saleswoman convinced me a gloss finish would be a bad idea in the laundry room and I would have had to buy an entire slab to get the matte finish. I wish I could figure out how to link things from my phone!...See Morerhome410
