Countertop insert?
Comments (9)I just bought an 8 ft length of pre-fabbed Wilsonart laminate countertop for my pantry at Home Depot for $90. They even sell lengths with the 45 degree angle cut into them, and all you do is insert some metal biscuit-type things and glue to make the joint. You use some adhesive laminate "tape" on any ends you have to cut, and voila - new countertops. I bought black to look similar to the soapstone we're installing in the main kitchen, but they have lots of color options. You really could do all new countertops in a standard-sized kitchen for $200-400. If I couldn't swing that, I'd go with soapstone tiles or trivets that I could put hot pots on....See MoreSwitching to Laminate/Goodbye Large Stainless Sink?
Comments (28)I recently had WA oiled soapstone installed in lieu of granite and I LOVE it. I really didn't expect to be so happy with it as granite was my first choice, but for budget reasons it didn't work out. 28 linear feet of WA cost $850. I had to pay just a little extra for a straight edge as it has to be done by hand. But the straight edge looks more like soapstone or granite. I don't really like the rounded machine made edge. Honestly, I'm really glad we didn't force the issue and stretch ourselves too thin by getting the granite because I'm that happy with the laminate. Someone will surely post that if I'd ever had granite I wouldn't "settle" for laminate. Truth is, I had a cambria countertop in my former home so I've experienced basically the same thing...plus I've had tons of experience working on granite counters at the homes of friends and relatives. Of course, we all know the differences, but the new laminates are another really great option available. I know of others who've replaced laminate with granite and didn't tear up their cabinets. That's not to say it can't happen...but it's not a given and can be done. Also...two homes ago I had laminate for a decade or more and it wasn't over marine grade plywood...and it lasted just fine with no swelling or water problems. Again..tha'ts not to say it couldn't happen, but with proper care I dont' think it's the norm....See MoreBudget but nice sink and faucet?
Comments (28)I didn't want another 25" sink either, nor did I want to go as large as 33", so I ended up with the Blanco Stellar 28". Perfect size for me! It doesn't come in a drop-in version unfortunately, but if you find that you can actually do an undermount, you should consider it. Edited to add: I see that the Karran Edge series that Joe cites above has a 30" sink, but cost information isn't there -- in my area it is only available from fabricators....See MoreCountertop Quote Advice
Comments (16)It’s a discontinued color that is now special order only. It’s a custom hand done edge, not machine post formed. That’s the highest dollar combo that exists in laminate, unless you’re also ordering a specialty finish other than standard matte. You likely can do an import quartz that has a terrazzo type look for not much more money....See Morekylan
