I think it should be painted. if the side walls ended at the same height as the sink wall, I think it could be considered "ceiling". But since the angled part ends at the top of the side walls, I think it should be considered wall.

I didn't see your previous post about this, but wanted to chime in that we had that exact dilemma for years in my son's bedroom-previous owner treated it like ceiling painted it white and it always bugged me. Several years later we finally painted that little area to match the wall color and the ceiling (and room) looked SO. much. taller.

I agree with malhgold-paint it the wall color. :)

What's the electrical there? If it's a light cutout, I'd definitely keep it as ceiling!

Wow, photos are so interesting. You are always going to have a different aspect on that angle because of the variation in light effects. That angle can be a major design feature of the room, a real plus if it's handled in an interesting way. I've been reading in old House Beautifu magss about decorators who use many shades of the same color for reasons of light effect.

Is the wall under the angle the same color as the two side walls? If not, I'd consider making the angle the same as the two sides and have ceiling and window wall colored differently. Or, add a 3rd? 4th? color, neither fish nor fowl, which makes that angled area its own special place. So many ideas, so little time.

There are so many variables still to be seen--the color of the cupboards, the shadowy area above them, the effect of the woodwork on the windows and door on the rest of the room, reflections from shiny and dull surfaces, etc. etc. etc. You might want to leave the lighter color there for now and wait to see how the light effects play out with more stuff in the room.

I think I have to agree with staceyneil if that is going to be a light.
After it is all said and done you can still change your mind because without the cabinets and lighting it can be tricky.

There's something interesting going on with the photos. The sink wall and ceiling look the same color, the angled part looks lighter and the side walls look dark. Before I read the question, I thought you had a cool look. It narrows the appearance of the room, but it would look cool if you had the side walls the buff color, and the ceiling, angle and sink wall all of a tint of the buff. That is, the buff mixed with white. Then you'd have a light ceiling, and a tall sink wall, and it would create an interesting colorblocking.

The electrical is for a pendant light.

The walls are all painted the same color (BM Powell Buff). The ceiling is BM Marble White, which will also be our trim color.

There will only be two upper cabinets on that sink wall, and they are blue:

It is very hard for me to visualize how it will all look once the two wall cabinets are hung (they are 36" wide, 48" tall, 14" deep). Since there is no run of cabinets, more of the wall/angle will be exposed than it normally would; in fact, if I had a run of uppers around the room, I would no doubt paint the angle as ceiling and forget about it...but since more will be visible, it concerns me more.

I didn't respond in your first post but did agree with the majority it should be painted with the ceiling. Now that I see it I have changed my mind and I would paint it the wall color.

FWIW - I like walls and ceilings painted the same color. When we moved into our current house, our designer told us to do that and we thought she was crazy. But we tried it and loved it. (We have lots of color throughout the house, from green to rust to purple! WHatever is on the wall is on the celing too!). This would take the decision-making out of this process. Just a thought.

I still think it is ceiling and that you could always paint it later if it bothers you after everything is installed. It is a relatively small piece.

You can also use the same color that's on the wall and lighten it a little for less of a contrast between the wall and the ceiling. Then use the white only for the trim.

I think you should have a lot of wine and then flip a coin.

I have these angles in the kids rooms and I think it opens the space up more with the angle included in the wall.

One more vote for painting it to match the wall. I think if you look at other places where you see angles, such as dormers, they are all painted to match the walls.

I still say ceiling.... I come from a family of architects and it just seems so totally WRONG to have a pendant light emerging from something your brain will read as "wall" if it's painted wall color. Pendant light = hanging from ceiling. But I'm not living there, so if it won't bother you, go for it :)

I vote for mixing 75% wall color with 25% ceiling color, paint.

Or use the 75/25 for whole back wall and 50/50 for the "is it a wall or ceiling section". In that room you can afford to be creative, it will even look nicer if you do.
