Two strikes on knobs, try try again?

I think this is my last decision! And I've failed twice already, so if this is wrong I think I'll have to go all pulls. I ordered the Amerock Abernathy, loved them until I felt them - they are acrylic and just don't look nearly as pretty IRL as on a screen. Then I ordered some square glass from Amazon - another disaster because they were mirror backed and crazy sparkly - like mini square disco balls.
My kitchen has white shaker cabinets, and I want an informal, slightly retro/industrial, peaceful and elegant but not fussy kitchen. I have Amerock candler pulls which I don't totally love, but it may be that I'm still getting used to them. I don't hate them, and intended to use them vertically on the uppers with solid doors. But I'd sure like to use glass on the up-uppers and the one set of glass doors that isn't shown here facing my breakfast table.

Please tell me if putting these lovely square glass/crystal knobs from Emtek on the glass front cabinets and up-uppers would be a mistake?

This is a similar kitchen with Candler pulls and a similar (but not nearly as pretty backsplash
Would it be "off" to mix vertical pulls on the uppers with the glass knobs on the up-uppers above them?

I like knobs on both sets of uppers, as shown in your picture. What about the square knobs in that picture? They look really good with the Canadel pulls.

Kk, I love the Candler. It was one of my choices. I would have used the chocolate bronze.

I think mixing the sparkly ones with the Candler will look wonderful. I love the Emtek crystal knobs. Your kitchen will be a stunner!

Agree with 3 strikes and you are out ------ don't necessarily follow it. After 2 strikes I take pause and try to find out as much as possible about the natural environment of the failing plant. I also try to identify a grower who successfully grows them. I have tried over and over again with Dendrobium cuthbersonii and have always failed . So I finally talked to Tom Perlite from Golden Gate Orchids who grows these things like I grow Dandelion and got some hints from him. Now it takes me 2 years to kill them instead of one. I have finally given up on these little beauties. Dendrobium nobile is another example. No matter how closely I follow the instructions as to how to grow them, winter rest etc, I cannot get a decent bloom. Either they don't bloom or they make a few lackluster blooms. So I finally talked to the grower in Hawaii who is the source of most of the commercial nobiles you see on the market every spring. Success, last spring all 3 of mine bloomed ------------ with a few lackluster flowers! Enough, they went on the plant table of my society and I'm done with them. Miltoniopsis; Killed every one of them in the past. Finally talked to Theresa Hill form Hillcrest Orchids who grows beautiful Miltoniopsis. Her advice was simple, keep them cool in the summer, warm in the winter, they like to be within 5F of 60F. Doing this I am now growing them successfully, meaning the plant is increasing in size. Last year they even bloomed, one or two spikes on a large plant. That should have been 10 spikes or more. So I'm not there yet and unless they pick it up may also give up on them but not yet. Parvisepalum Paphiopedeliums: I just got started with these so have no failures to report. Go to the Gallery where you see an entry I placed yesterday of my first success with Paph armeniacum. They also have a reputation of being a little difficult and I had a discussion with Dr Holger Perner at the San Francisco show who thinks most people are growing them wrong. Most people treat them as cold growers. True in the winter but not true in the summer. In their natural habitat, the ones from China get treated to a bright, sunny, cold, dry winter and a shady, hot, humid and very wet summer. The result of the monsoon season there. So unlike Dracula who should be kept as cold as possible in the summer, these Paphs should go in the warm greenhouse and drenched every day. Since there are 35,000 species of orchids available, I generally don't mess with ones that don't like me. My greenhouse is full of robustly growing plants. Not because I'm a genius but because that is the price they have to pay in order to stay. If a plant lingers, grows poorly and fails to bloom, I will get rid of it. Visitors to my growing area think I do magic because most plants look very healthy when in fact it is a process of throwing them against the wall and if they don't stick, they don't stay. Here are two more buds, they are both growing at the same time! I will either have two that bloom together or close to the same time, I am so happy that I had one bud bloom, I was not expecting more. I guess my grandmother did leave me her green thumb! Thanks grandma!!! God bless her soul, she was a great influence in my life and I sure do miss her when a particular flower gives me trouble, she was someone I could go to when I had a plant question. I know she would have loved the moonflower bloom.

So here's an interesting note about my varigated dayflower find... someone on the "Name that Plant!" forum suggested it might be Tradescantia fluminensis 'Variegata' or Tradescantia albiflora. Both are often kept as hanging-basket houseplants, and get white dayflower-type flowers. Also, if they do not get enough light, the foliage will revert to green, and sometimes they throw green segments for no particular reason. Both are referred to as "wandering jew" on various websites, and mention that they do escape cultivation occasionally. I have never had them as houseplants so I'm still not convinced this is Tradescantia and not Commelina. I will wait to see the blooms. Even people who say they have encountered these as weeds have had people volunteer to take the "weeds" from them. The color is striking. I will grow as much of it as I can so I will have some to share! I'm thinking we shall all have to try to overwinter it in order to keep it from disappearing...

Oh, yes, I wasn't following the description that well, and was looking at the labels on the pictures. The dairy sink being the separate one makes sense. I also totally missed the 24" dishwasher on the plan. So sorry about that! Ignore entirely what I said about it. That's why I ask questions. Besides learning more, I also get my mistakes fixed. :) And it helps my approach to know that your rabbi requires separate dishwashers. That pretty well points to the other requirements you have. :) One really important piece of advice: Have a backup plan for Pesach. Unless you're much further along than you sound like, you're in the zone of if everything goes right. Make a plan for what to do if things go wrong and you're not in your new kitchen in time. At least if the sinks and appliances are in on time you'll be able to cook ahead. :) Re the overhang (which doesn't show at all on my screen), 30cm should be adequate. It's a little tight, for long term comfort, but so is the width. For squeezing in a few kids for breakfast or baking it should be fine. OTOH, I have many fond memories of my mother bringing the mixer to the table so that we could make hamentashen, cookies and other fun things. If you're kneading by hand, you might like doing that on the table better than the counter unless you're tall. My optimal height for kneading or rolling is 33", which is halfway between the standards for table and counter. I figured out, however, since I have a carpet under the table and don't want to bake there, that I could use my counter by wearing tall clogs, rather than having a special, lower, baking counter. :) Can you explain more about how the range and window will interact? Do you ever kasher the oven for dairy baking? Would you ever consider getting a wall oven rather than the toaster oven? I know there are budget limitations, but sometimes you can build what works for you now then allows for an easy transition to a planned change in the future. The big problem with the toaster oven niche is the heat. Toaster ovens aren't usually well insulated and they throw a lot of heat around all sides. OTOH, if you have a niche big enough to transition into an oven later, it should work well for either. I think the whole niche should be lined with tile for it to be safe for the toaster oven. That's five sides. The whole plan makes much more sense to me now that I know that the L is the dairy zone. If you had enough produce for that to be your parve zone, I'd think you had a farm and could process it outside. :) Yes, the whole thing makes a lot more sense now. I can definitely see all the baking and dairy meals in that area. I just think you're going to need a bigger dairy oven as your kids get bigger. Teenagers are a lot like goats--they'll eat anything and everything and leave a wasteland behind them. Is the dairy cooktop induction? The boil time would be great for pasta, and it's really wonderful to cook on in general. You can melt chocolate or make toffee (matzah toffee!!! major crowd pleaser) without a double boiler on induction, for instance. The biggest issues I see for the perimeter flow are the path from the stove to the dining room, which I assume is outside the bottom opening, since the other is the laundry. (Do you have a kitchen porch? Or is that the laundry? Or does it open off the laundry?) I'm thinking the straight path is going to be handing things across the peninsula, which isn't a good idea, dripwise. I'm not understanding the prep flow, though. If the parve sink is on the right, then it's the parve counter that runs by the stove? And if you wash meat on the meat side, and then carry it through the parve zone, does that make sense? Or do I have it backwards still? Regarding pantry size, the amount of pantry storage you need is just a bit more than your cabinet will hold. Do you have a makolet (sp?) on your block? That relieves a lot of the storage pressure. 60 cm really isn't enough for a family of 8 for American style, shop once a week, storage. If you can send a kid out for a can of whatever six days a week, it's a lot easier. The best way to know if it'll do is to start with the must haves. If your baking supplies will be in the pantry, for instance, group them together as if they're on the right sized shelves and see how much room they take up. Do the same with all your staples. Since you won't have drawers (roll out tray shelves), consider collecting boxes that will fit that you can slide in and out...but remember, either one takes up some of the shelf width. One way to gain more room in the kitchen is to find some space elsewhere for the cookbooks. You can copy out your most used recipes and put them in a single binder. Keeps your books clean, too. :) That takes a lot less space than all the books. I'm not assuming you have room for them elsewhere, but if you can find it, you'll have more pantry space. I think you've done a good job of squeezing things in, covering your requirements and staying on budget. I keep thinking of ways to change things around, but they start to compromise that. Regarding the backsplash and corner by the range, tile before you put the range in, including behind the riser. Just let it be what it is. It'll be much more comfortable to cook with the range away from the wall, even if it's just by that little bit, the tray cabinet is good to have, and it gives you a place for a spoon rest and a trivet on the far side. As to colors, the Formica sounds like a good color. I was asking about the floor because that ubiquitous stone (agreed about the ignorable factor) is nice and light and should look fine with the color you're describing which is more toward a medium value. I think you could go with either the black or the blizzard white (very low speckle factor) Caesarstone and have it look good. The black will be snazzier, but show more streaks. OTOH, the white can yellow over time and exposure to sunlight. It sounds like it will be attractive, warm and pleasant. Too much "character" in a small, busy kitchen can be overwhelming. Your neutrals should have enough variation not to be boring, and enough boring to be calm amid the chaos.

I think the pulls on the lower uppers and the sparkly knobs on the glass doors will look great. Mixing knobs is a wonderful touch and as long as there is a method to the madness it looks great. Have you ever seen Segbrown's kitchen- it's one of the posts on the old 'show me your pulls and knobs' thread which I have linked. It shows how mixing lots of different knobs and pulls works when you have a system

I find the glass to be too boudoir. Not a fan of mixed. Don't see sparkly in your kitchen as the lower strappy pulls on the cabinets are sort of 40s. Those don't play happily together.

I'd stick with smaller hardware from the same range -- just as the sample does.

Thanks for the comment, Romy, I decided you are correct about knobs on both sets of uppers, at least on the less than 42" doors. So I've ordered enough to put them on all short upper doors and hope it looks okay to have pulls on the 6 long upper doors. DH really wants pulls on those, which are also the most used doors, so I think this system makes sense functionally and hope the aesthetics will work.
Blackchamois, we are in Tampa, FL. The cabinets are custom built in my GC's shop, he also does granite fabrication, electrical, etc.

KK I was rereading this post and I need to clarify my comment. I didn't mean that you should have gone with the chocolate bronze, I meant that I would have chosen the cb to go with my cabs if I used the Candler. I was horrified to read what sounded like me telling you that you should have gone with a different finish.....Yikes, I need to reread before I post!!!

I haven't offered alot of advice on GW because I've only done one kitchen and don't feel like an "expert".
The square Candel knobs are elegant (not fussy) but also look solid. I really like them. I think you should use them on all your uppers. Putting the pulls in a vertical position on your uppers is like introducing a third style of hardware. I'm afraid you'll lose the look you are trying to achieve.
I have knobs on 45" upper cabinets. They feel very solid. I was talked into vertical pulls on the pantry cabinets in a hallway & the laundry room. I don't like the look as well. I love my pulls in the horizontal, not as much in the vertical.

Romy718, if it was just me, I would go all knobs on the uppers. But I am taking dh's wishes into consideration, a little, and I do like the look of my pulls in a vertical position. I have them that way on pullouts and the few lower doors. I could certainly be wrong - I have been spectacularly wrong on hardware so far!
Rococogurl, you are likely right. But I just couldn't get those knobs out of my head! I am worried this may be one of Jakuvall's "don't let a good idea ruin a design - use it next time" examples. I may send those knobs back and pay the restocking fee...or decide to use them in my bedroom...or just put them in my kitchen and know that while I love them no one else sees them the same way. I don't think I'm going to have a "next time" in remodeling a kitchen.

I'm quite interested in how design elements successfully migrate from different rooms - I think lots of people first see mop (and my mop mosaic) as "bathroomy" and my GC was appalled by the idea of glass knobs in my kitchen - he said they are good for tween girls and strippers, lol!

People with my level of talent really ought to just follow design rules and use experts. Winston Churchill once said that American will always do the right thing, after exhausting all other possibilities. Call me patriotic, I've got the "exhausting all other possibilities" part down pat!

Kk, with your lovely kitchen and knowing that you made it happen I think you can safely say you have the design thing down pat. I happen to love crystal anywhere and don't think it looks little girly or stripperish (yes iPad, I know that's not a real word.

Can someone please tell me when GCs turned into the design police? I went through that with our second one. He was French so I figured it might be that. But he thought my cabinets should be replaced not painted (fine if he had been paying not us), he called the dining room light fixture the "Camembert" (meanwhile it looked stunning and helped sell the place) and -- after I asked him to keep a relatively new sink faucet he threw it out. Told me I needed a new one.

He was terrific about most things, handled some nasty surprises super well, and kept his cool when the tile contractor turned unprofessional.

But I hired him for his building expertise and excellent subs, not aesthetic opinions.

If you want knobs made out of playdough in the kitchen, your contractor shouldn't have anything to say about it apart from when can he install them.

Wonder how he'd like it if you came through his house and told him all the things that appalled you. Sheesh.

I love your glass knobs! I think they will look really great with your pulls.

I feel your pain though....I photoshopped various versions of all pulls, pulls and knobs, placement of said pulls and knobs, etc until I think I drove myself crazy. It's amazing how time consuming all of the decisions become.

I can't wait to see your kitchen. It looks great so far!

LOL, rococogurl! I do think this guy is pretty talented, and I'm sure he's saved me from myself more than once, but thanks to you I'm fantasizing about having my kids create some playdough knobs and asking him to install them! Ok, so my fantasies aren't exactly novella worthy. I guess strippers get all that fun, too!
Holly-kay, imo crystal is the decor equivalent of garlic or chocolate - isn't everything better with at least a smidge?
Rkb21, I'm alternately really happy and really frustrated that I never learned to photoshop....I think I've hit saturation crazy level without it.
The super great news is that I'm cooking in my kitchen! Nothing as pretty as trailrunner, but I made lasagna yesterday, a puffed oven pancake for breakfast and fish and veggies for dinner. We are on a 4 day no take-out streak - a record since demo in July!
