trying the moonflowers inside again

I thought I would try to grow moonflowers indoors again, my neighbor that I gave one has had his bloom several times. I have planted two in the same pot and then today transplanted one seedling into another pot. Here is the one that came up first.

Not sure if you mean you are hoping to grow them indoors full-time or? I have started these indoors this year as well and is the first time I've ever got them to actually germinate...YEAH! I sowed the seeds on Feb. 17 and got 3 seedlings within two weeks time. I potted them up into 32oz containers and have had them now in bud for at least the last month. A few buds are getting ready to start opening any day now....possibly even today!!
We have a rather short growing season here in the central Idaho mountains....Clearwater Mountains to be specific....and just was hoping to get a head start. I was soooooooooo not expecting flowering to start so early since reading so many posts regarding late blooming if at all. I haven't done anything special, but am wondering if the small containers may some how be forcing them? Am going to go for a slightly similar circumstance for when I get ready to take them outdoors....hmmm
Also the window sill where they sit is not getting all that great of light....maybe 3-4 hours of direct light at most and they look very healthy. The leader tips were pinched shortly after budding and several new vines are underway; leaves are dark green and big :)

Agree with 3 strikes and you are out ------ don't necessarily follow it. After 2 strikes I take pause and try to find out as much as possible about the natural environment of the failing plant. I also try to identify a grower who successfully grows them. I have tried over and over again with Dendrobium cuthbersonii and have always failed . So I finally talked to Tom Perlite from Golden Gate Orchids who grows these things like I grow Dandelion and got some hints from him. Now it takes me 2 years to kill them instead of one. I have finally given up on these little beauties. Dendrobium nobile is another example. No matter how closely I follow the instructions as to how to grow them, winter rest etc, I cannot get a decent bloom. Either they don't bloom or they make a few lackluster blooms. So I finally talked to the grower in Hawaii who is the source of most of the commercial nobiles you see on the market every spring. Success, last spring all 3 of mine bloomed ------------ with a few lackluster flowers! Enough, they went on the plant table of my society and I'm done with them. Miltoniopsis; Killed every one of them in the past. Finally talked to Theresa Hill form Hillcrest Orchids who grows beautiful Miltoniopsis. Her advice was simple, keep them cool in the summer, warm in the winter, they like to be within 5F of 60F. Doing this I am now growing them successfully, meaning the plant is increasing in size. Last year they even bloomed, one or two spikes on a large plant. That should have been 10 spikes or more. So I'm not there yet and unless they pick it up may also give up on them but not yet. Parvisepalum Paphiopedeliums: I just got started with these so have no failures to report. Go to the Gallery where you see an entry I placed yesterday of my first success with Paph armeniacum. They also have a reputation of being a little difficult and I had a discussion with Dr Holger Perner at the San Francisco show who thinks most people are growing them wrong. Most people treat them as cold growers. True in the winter but not true in the summer. In their natural habitat, the ones from China get treated to a bright, sunny, cold, dry winter and a shady, hot, humid and very wet summer. The result of the monsoon season there. So unlike Dracula who should be kept as cold as possible in the summer, these Paphs should go in the warm greenhouse and drenched every day. Since there are 35,000 species of orchids available, I generally don't mess with ones that don't like me. My greenhouse is full of robustly growing plants. Not because I'm a genius but because that is the price they have to pay in order to stay. If a plant lingers, grows poorly and fails to bloom, I will get rid of it. Visitors to my growing area think I do magic because most plants look very healthy when in fact it is a process of throwing them against the wall and if they don't stick, they don't stay. Hi Kristopher, I'd have to (respectfully) disagree with blazeaglory by saying you SHOULD try to grow the Improved Meyer Lemon (IML), [particularly if your heart is set on it, which is what it sounds] and not let others' difficulties dissuade you. In regards to whether to plant in the 5.1.1. or gritty mix, I've attached an older but useful post on the merits and perils of each; it also has a nice picture from greenman on the size/type of bark you should look for to use for either mix. Like you, I was a new IML grower last summer and I couldn't decide on the 5.1.1. or the gritty. I finally decided to bare root my IML into the 5.1.1. mix since I found the ingredients so much easier to source AND this mix is lighter overall, which has proven useful in transporting my tree to and fro. BTW, if you do go with the 5.1.1., you'll need to use dolomite lime and NOT gypsum (for recipes of either, do a search for "5.1.1." or "gritty" on this forum. Here are some pictures of what my tree looked like from the onset (starting July 2011) to the present. My tree immediately after planting in the 5.1.1. mix and top dressed with about an inch of the bark. The tree was a rescue from my local nursery and was on the decline when I potted it. Within a short while after potting (a couple weeks or so), I lost all the leaves which seems to be very common and causes a lot of people useless grief. Within a couple months (and keeping the plant away from sun and using only water/no fertilizer), I started to see new growth and commenced my regular fertilizing regimen of 1/2 tsp of Foliage Pro (can be found on Amazon) + 1 capful of vinegar per gal of water at each watering. I only watered when, after sticking a wooden dowel all the way into the "soil", it came out dry (which was anywhere from a few days to a week). Late this past Winter/early Spring (on advice from a friend on this forum), I removed all the leaves in an effort to force more dense growth on the tree during the coming growing season. ...And fortunately, the new growths (pics taken earlier today) have just come in and it looks like there will be tons of new and denser leaf growth and some flowers as well this year. gardeniarose - Are the plants getting enough water...sometimes if the plant is somewhat dehydrated >the blooms may not open all the way and be floppy... a cold spell could also produce flowers that only partially open,but I doubt that is the case in zone 10FLA... if the roots are too wet >like soaking in water that could cause problems... the only other possibilities are that it could be an unknown infection of some type(e.g. bloom wilt) or it could be that the particular strain (or individual plant) is carrying for blooms that don't fully open... An excessive amouint of Nitrogen could be 'burning' the plant,but this is usually apparent in the leaves as well... Try some phosphorus based bloom booster on it and see if that helps to strengthen the turgidity of the blooms... TTY,... Ron

Two days to grout!!!!!!!!! What a nightmare. No more 3-D stuff w/o using the push/sqush method. Had to use small paint brushes to apply grout and clean some areas. This is the biggest mess I've created in a LONG time. It evolved from sinple to the scalloped front, then decided to put lights behind each scallop, so off to Home Depot for supplies. Used an extension cord and snap-in sockets. Then I realized the hanger I embedded might not be strong enough, so added more to the back to incorporate into the existing hanger. That involved drilling, covering the wires w/lath, stitching it to the back, more mortar, etc. Nightmare is OVER. Waaay to large for DD's purposes, so w/have my yard man hang it on my patio. Here are two moonvine plants and several morning glories too, the area where the axis of the vine for the moonvine is purple and it is growing very good, this is in the picture window and I put a string so it could vine to its heart content, could that be buds getting ready to come on? It looks like a little leaf and the color IS purple, here is the picture, the next pic is the top half.

Here is the top half, as you can see they have branched out several times, you can't see the purple that I was telling you about in these pics, but how much bigger do you think it will get? I don't fertilize it at all just water when it looks dry and only from the bottom. It is now July 1, how much longer before it blooms or can anyone tell me?

This is a picture of one of the large leaves of my moonflower plant that is in the window, will the flowers be that big even if they are inside? And just when can I expect buds, and where on the vine will they appear, along the vine or at the top?

The moonflowers have taken over the livingroom window, here is where they are now. I hope they do bloom, they sure like the area where they are, there is no way I could even move them now. They are above the curtain, so hopefully they won't get too much taller.

I am wondering, what do the moonflower buds look like when they start? I have some things on my vine that look kind of strange, can anyone tell me if these are buds or more leaves? If they are buds I am going to have a LOT of flowers, I hope so.

I hope this is a moonflower bud coming up, it is not like any I have seen on these plants yet. Took it with my hubby's camera because his takes closer pictures without being fuzzy.

Success! After trying and retrying and retrying, I have a moonflower bud! I am so happy about that and also my feet won't touch the ground when it blooms, I will surey take pics of the bloom. If anyone tells you that it is impossible to grow moonflowers indoors, you can show them this picture and the one of the bloom when it opens. Can someone tell me when it is going to open?

Moonflower bud as of Sept.5, 2014, could someone tell me when they think it is going to open? A neighbor who had one said it would in 3 or 4 days, in that case it will be HUGE!

Here it is opened up all the way, I took it at night because it is more striking then. I have 4 more buds and I am going to try to string it out further into the living room, I have a hook in the ceiling and there is a vine that is already on the ceiling and I am going to try to tie a string on it and on the nail above the curtain rod and see if it will find it.

Looks great and of normal bloom size too. Congratulations! My outdoor moon flowers are just about done for the season, with mostly seed pods now to watch grow.

I have about 4 more buds growing, I did not think it would bloom at all and then here it was, I am going to get more pics when the others bloom, I hope to see just how long I can keep the vines alive. We have a storm window that we put up at the picture window but I don't know if the vines would get enough heat and sun there and I sure can't move it now! More pics to follow.

Here are two more buds, they are both growing at the same time! I will either have two that bloom together or close to the same time, I am so happy that I had one bud bloom, I was not expecting more. I guess my grandmother did leave me her green thumb! Thanks grandma!!! God bless her soul, she was a great influence in my life and I sure do miss her when a particular flower gives me trouble, she was someone I could go to when I had a plant question. I know she would have loved the moonflower bloom.
