Oh my goodness, it is gorgeous *already* - it will be amazing with the backsplash and counters! I think whatever you choose for the countertops, wood or marble, will be lovely. I think it would work either way, and I love the idea of the rich wood against the glass.

I hope you keep us posted with more pictures after the backsplash goes up, and then with the counters, whatever you decide : ).

Love those marble slabs!! Go with your heart. Either will be fine with your chosen backsplash. Your chosen edges seem fine also. Good luck and yes-post more pics as you go along with the remodel. You're going to have a lovely kitchen.

It depends on where you will expect to do most of your prep. I'd rather do the majority of the prep work on wood counters and do less on the marble (on cutting boards, of course, lol). While I know marble can be sealed, I'd still put it in the "lower traffic" areas.

Have you considered IKEA butcherblock at all? I know it is quite reasonable, so could solve the cost issue. You could stain it whatever color you want and no one would be the wiser.

teapotmissy - Your kitchen is already beautiful. Are your floors going to be wood or something else? I love the look of wood in a kitchen, especially a white kitchen, it really warms up the look. I can see why you want to have the marble on the perimeter - it would really work well and compliment the back splash you have chosen. And a wood topped white island would be striking. That said the reverse would be lovely too - there is not much nicer than a huge expanse of marble in my book. The wood perimeter would "ground" the white cabinets, but might not be as complimentary to the backsplash. But you can put a sample to it and judge - the colors look like the could look nice with wood - just not give you that light feeling the marble and iridescent glass would. I don't think there is a mistake to made in the two options you have, just what is your preference. If you are putting in a wood floor, I think that will add warmth as well. Let us know what you decide.

Several of you mentioned adding wood floors to warm up the space. We are very lucky that the whole house has dark reclaimed red oak floors throughout. They are just covered up until the messy painting is done. When we modified the kitchen layout to add the big island, it necessitated additional sanding and patches, but hopefully it will come out great. They just finished painting the interior today. The hardwood floor guys are coming tomorrow. I'm so excited.
