Granite Installation Success Stories, Please Share

Peke's thread about her first lovely stone/bad fabrication and installation and how that eventually worked out got me thinking. Several people commented there that they were living in fear and dread of getting their own granite fabricated because of all the horror stories about seams and gaps and wrongness in general. It's true, we've had quite a few threads on gaps you could roll a golf ball into, seams with all the expertise of a 14 yr old shop assistant, sink cut outs done by someone with a hangover, and other unfortunate outcomes. It might well seem that getting your granite/quartz/whatever installed is a nightmare waiting to happen. I thought it might be helpful to gather a group of "ours came out right the first time" examples, particularly examples of areas that can be tricky. I'll start:

I am a fabricator. My shop, which is mid-sized, does several hundred jobs per year. We have a handful of jobs each year that encounter difficulty.

Sometimes it because our staff consists of people and people make mistakes. We have a formal quality management program so we don't make a lot of them and when one does occur we remedy the situation as quickly as possible.

Another reason a job can run into difficulty is that we're working with a natural material with an EXTREMELY wide range of physical characteristics. The softest stone we work with is a little harder than jello and the hardest is a little softer than diamond.

For example, not every edge can be put on every stone. Since there are 30+ edge profiles and thousands of different stones no shop can know the outcome of every combination. Occasionally even sn experienced shop like mine runs into difficulty with a particular stone or application.

A third reason is that a small fraction of the public is crazy. Ask anyone that deals with the public on a regular basis and they will have horror stories about people that are impossible to please and accept no responsibility for the problems they create themselves. (example: Mrs. Smith changes her stone selection 5 times and then, at install, says we have the wrong stone. Even when presented with documentation regarding the selection she insists the fabricator made a mistake. People like that suck.)

So... if you want a first rate job with with minimal risk of difficulty do your homework and find a good fabricator. It's not likely to be the cheapest one you can find but it doesn't have to be the most expensive either.

I'm a KD- Guess I've handled a few hundred counters.

Can count the problems on one hand. The fabricator I've used the most has had next to none -always on time, schedules viewing, have had one minor scratch issue handled next day, one stain handled next day.
There is only one other I trust and use occasionally.

I get a very small discount and don't add a markup. Keeps prices a bit in line but they are still not the cheapest. I will not do counters if I am not doing the kitchen. I will gladly offer the name of the fabricator to people though.

If I am doing a kitchen and client wishes to shop counters around that is fine with me but I will have nothing to do with it in that case.

I learned about 50-50 alcohol-water for cleaning granite over in Kitchens. A lot of people over there swore by it. I stuck with commercial products though for awhile. When we reno'd our bathrooms recently, I was searching for stone-friendly, yet disinfecting cleaning products to use on our bathroom surfaces (FWIW, Seventh Generation makes the only stone-safe, disinfecting spray bathroom cleaner that I've found so far--I have a bunch of cans of Lysol Bathroom Cleaner still, so sometimes use it just inside the tub itself and in the sink--very carefully!). Anyway, during my seemingly endless search, came across numerous recipes utilizing vinegar (not stone-friendly), borax powder, etc., in conjunction with essential oils (like lavender, or tea tree, for example). I decided to mix up some alcohol, water, and lavender oil and give it a try. The proportions were mostly from following what they were using in the Kitchen forum (although the EPA doc said 10% alcohol to 90% water, or 85% water and 5% lavender oil, is perfectly effective). I kind of trial and error it when mixing up a fresh bottle, if it doesn't smell "right" or evaporate/dry up nicely (without smearing) as I wipe, I add little more of one "ingredient" or another. I don't think it has to be perfect. I ended up not using it much in the bathroom, but tried it on my granite, and really liked the results (no smears or residue). I figured it was worth trying on my SS as well (we stopped having our cleaning person come, and I had difficulty cleaning the fridge doors without smearing/streaking using the oil-based stuff). I had to scrub off any and all traces of the old cleaner, but once I did I was good to go. Now I can spot clean or fully clean the surface with just my spray bottle and a microfiber cloth. I even "salvaged" my bff's fridge (fingerprinted, smeary mess), by scrubbing it with BKF and then following up with the alcohol-water spray. *Note, "naked" SS appliances reflect light differently than the same appliances cleaned/polished with oil-based product. The surface has slightly less sheen, and because of that, perhaps look a little colder, or a bluer-based grey--not bad, just something I noticed. I'm much happier with the ease of cleaning, so the trade-off is worth it for me. I also use the spray on my sink after cleaning with a soapy sponge or BKF (wipe dry with a microfiber and it looks great). Also really nice on our Wolf range's black burner pans for spot or light cleaning (I make sure not to spray when any burners are lit!).

Deposit down, name on slab! (#1) It is some type of marble, not sure which, any ideas? Fellow at yard, said they put some type of sealer on it, so normal bathroom use, toothpaste, etc shouldn't be any problem. Remnant is over double the size of what I need, so there should be lots to cut out shelves for shower niches! So, bought pendant lights for vanity at blowout sale, granite guy also sells tile, he gave me tons of samples for backsplash, I think I've found a winner, I had originally thought of pebbles, (which look great with the marble), but this broken stone that he threw in my car goes so well with my lights...LOL Limestone looking porcelain tile, colour I'm going with is the one closest to the stone BS. Marble sample isn't my kind of marble, but the colour tones are the same. Took it home just to play with colours. So, am thinking Limestone looking tile for floor and shower walls, broken stone for BS and walls of shower niches, marble for countertop and shelves of niches. Oh yeah, I got a fan/light combo for $29 ~ $100 off regular price, both pendants were also $29, listed @ $157, but lighting is so ridiculously over-priced saw the same light listed at homedepot.ca for $50, still a deal, just not as good as I'd originally thought! OK, just got off the phone with the tile/granite guy, and the noce BS is regularly $17 each 4 X 12" piece, he wants to clear it out, so he'll sell it to me for 60% off, so $6.80 a piece, now I just need to figure out how much I want....MMMMmmmm Oh, and while in town, saw my favourite ladies dress shop had a clearance sale, nice $115 top for $5, and a pair of $80 khaki walking shorts for $5...am I on a roll or what? LOL

I absolutely second wwwonderwhiskers advice! And, if your digital camera will take videos as well, shoot very methodical videos of each room starting in one corner and working your way around the room in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. Then take your overlapping still photographs immediately after taking the video. It is often much easier to figure out what is what in a video. But still photographs will be sharper and show more details. With a combination of videos and still photos taken on the same date, you can use the video to help you orient your still photos and figure out what you are looking at...especially if you take the time to tape numbered squares of paper up around the room before making videos and shooting photos. Our "open wall" photos have saved us a couple of enormous repair bills as well. And, when we got ready to hang our TV, it was nice to be able to look at the photos and see right where the studs and extra bracing were located. It is also nice when you start to hang a picture on the wall, to KNOW, that you're not fixing to accidentally drive a nail into a hidden pipe. Oh, especially if you're going to have a slab foundation, don't forget to photograph where all the pipes and stuff run UNDER the slab before the concrete gets poured. And don't forget to take pictures of the outside of your house before the sheathing is put on. If your house has more than one floor, be sure you have pictures of everything that runs thru the space between the two floors as well. Water from a leaking pipe or waterline can often travel along joists quite a way before dripping through the ceiling sheet rock and showing up as a wet spot. Rather then unnecessarily tearing out a bunch of sheet rock, It helps to know where the water COULD be coming from.

Honestly, yes, taft, just get it out any way you can. Seriously--you are in charge, not the stuff. That's my "Take It Out Back and Smash It With a Hammer" philosophy. Here's another one of my theories: I call it my "Stop Me Before I Kill Again" theory. It will all end up in the landfill anyway. Eventually. It will wear out, get broken, become so out of date nobody wants it. Everything. Seriously--everything. It all goes in the garbage eventually. Just like--we all die. What the end will be is never in question. It is just a matter of time. And, more important, it is a matter of how much good or evil we do (or the stuff does) along the way. Right now that stuff in boxes is evil. Remember your words: "I was feeling so hemmed in by the stuff in this house I couldn't take it anymore. " That's evil--that's what that is. That stuff is a little (or big!) piece of evil in your life. You can't move; your home doesn't feel welcoming; you look at it and feel horrible about yourself. That's evil. Seriously, it is. The stuff is crying out: Stop me before I kill again! So, you have two choices: rehabilitation or execution. If you can rehabilitate it (give it away to someone who will use it; get it into a recycling bin; sell it for money) easily, that's a sensible move. But will it rehabilitate? Will the cost--emotional cost, time cost--be prohibitive? Do you want to find someone who takes "stuff" and sorts through it to find stuff they can sell on eBay? (an eBay entrepreneur?) Do you want to give it to a thrift shop somewhere, so they can see if they want anything? Do you want to pay your college-age/teenage son/neighbor (or maybe your neighbor's cleaning lady) to go through it looking for stuff like money or photos? But all that sounds like a lot of work, with little guarantee it will be viable. Remember, the stuff will continue to work evil while you sort through it. So just toss it. If you're pretty sure you won't lose a $10,000 bearer bond, or something, just throw it out. (I found $40 in cash in a box I sorted through--but it was just one box of sorting. If I had 18 boxes, and someone said, "would you pay $40 to get rid of them?" my answer would have been yes. So you might not need to be that concerned about what's in them.) Good luck! OH! Here's one other option to consider: Let this forum be your discipline. If you want to, you could decide that every day you will eliminate one box. Every day. (Or, OK, every Saturday, you'll eliminate 3 of them, minimum.) Post here, and tell us how you're doing. (Or, make that a real-world situation, which will be more powerful, even: If you've got a good friend, ask her to come help you sort through 5 boxes every Saturday morning; you'll buy donuts if she'll help you. Even if all she does it sit there and say to you, if only by her presence: "Hey, I gave up my Saturday morning to help you get rid of boxes. Get off your bum and get rid of some boxes; don't waste my time." Don't have a friend? Hire a cleaning-lady-type person for a Saturday morning, several weeks in a row, and get boxes, trash bags, and directions to a donation place in place before you start.) Go get 'em, taft!

Oldryder, you are wrong, a small percentage of the population isn't crazy. It's more like 75%.

I wish we could have afforded an independent fabricator. They were more than $2,000 more than the big box for the same exact quartz. About 75% more expensive. That said the guy that came out to temate seemed right on top of his game. I will check in me y Friday after they come to install!

Lol, I would certainly agree there are a decent number of irrationally crazy people out there, and it seems most of them frequent the pharmacy I work at!

My poor granite shop! I asked so many questions after reading GW for a year. I really think the template guy was caught off gaurd, I was concerned about items they do standard, just the way I wanted them, and don't think twice about!

They answered all my questions, gave me instructions on care, and were very patient. They were very accommodating when I was viewing stones too, and knowledgeable.

My install went very well, and the fit against the walls/cabinets is perfect. Minimal gap by the range, I actually was afraid it wouldn't fit, but it's perfect! The zero reveal sink cut is wonderful too. I have one small piece that tapers by about 1/4 inch, but I really don't notice it anymore. It's a small part of the short wall, I think it may be more related to the corner radius than the cut.

If I buy more granite, I'd definitely go there first! I considered granite for the FP surround, and I know they do a lot of those, but decided it would be a bit much for this house. After the expense of converting to gas, tile is more in line with the rest of the house.

Anyone in the NY Albany/Saratoga area can contact me off board if they want a name.

My granite fabricator was fantastic! When my kitchen was still in the planning stage, we took our plans to the fabricator for an initial estimate. I was having some trouble visualizing the unusual shaped island we were considering and the fabricator offered to make a full size paper template for us at no charge or a wood template for a nominal fee.
Having that template was fantastic.

The fabricator used laser measuring and CNC machining and everything "fit to a t".
A seam was needed in the counter to the right of the ovens in order to be able to get the piece in without damaging the walls or cabinets.

He did put seams at the corners of the cooktop to avoid having a longer seam elsewhere on the run. The seams are almost undetectable.

The top portion of my china cabinet was already installed so the granite needed to be slipped in between the space left by the cabinetmaker between the two portions. The fabricator got it in perfectly.

Love the way the fabricator made all the curves in my counters just the way we planned and was able to do zero/flush reveal for the sink

I live in the metropolitan Milwaukee area. My granite was a level 1 granite and the fabricator charged by the square ft. I paid $64 a sq.ft. and there were no add on charges for measuring or cutouts. All cutting including holes for faucet, air switch and soap dispenser was done at their shop.

Wish everyone could have the great experience I had.

I don't have any mid-install pics to share as I didn't take any but our last kitchen while small and simple went in no problem. We went directly with a fabricator. They don't have a CNC and we requested an arch on the peninsula. They did it by hand and it looked great. The shop we went with said well it's not the guys favorite thing to do but they can and will do it absolutely. I DID want it and I loved it all the more after we had it.

Conversely, another shop we talked to continually told me "I didn't want to do that" which translated to "WE don't want to do that" so they were out and I won't even consider them this next time around.

badger-love your curves! Not sure I have seen your 'hutch' cabinet before - ties in so nicely! Sorry a smidge OT.

oldryder - #3 - yes. Most definitely. There are some people that will never...ever...be happy...with anything. Quite sad really.
