Stone experts--1/4" gap between wall and counter--acceptable?

SO--they came and put in the rest of my counters yesterday...while I was out at a doctor's appointment. DH supervised...they fixed the rough edge on one counter, and repaired the bad seam next to the sink. He was reasonably pleased with the repairs. (He's still not 100% happy with the seam...but it looks ok to me.)

Unfortunately, he missed the 1/4" gap between the newly installed counter and the wall. And we were NOT planning on having till all the way to the pass through. Pictures would help, I suppose:

Tile is SUPPOSED to stop at the inner edge of the blue tape. I guess we could continue it to the pass through...but I'm not certain it's thick enough, even with adhesive behind it, to over the gap:

And then there's this oddity--which I think we could minimize with a piece of trim...but it just doesn't LOOK right:

This is only the second complete kitchen I've done--and my first time with Caeserstone. Is this acceptable? It's an older house (1966)...so it's entirely possible my walls are not perfectly square and plumb...but I thought templating took that into account?

Should the templating guy have pointed out that weird little notch? Or was it my responsibility to notice that? I honestly don't know.

Regardless...looks like I may have to postpone the range delivery again...(Installer won't put it in until the counters are in place.) Unless y'all think the above is within acceptable tolerances. Then I'll figure out a way to make it work.

I've emailed the install supervisor from the stone company, and I've emailed my GC with pictures. GC is out of town for the next week, visiting his grandson who is finally in remission from leukemia...but I'll call him if I y'all think this is unacceptable and I don't get anywhere with the stone guys.

My GC couldn't look at the pictures on his phone...but he said what I described is "totally unacceptable." Told me to delay range delivery...and not to worry. He would make certain all was "exactly as it should be."

(I have a feeling he's going to call the head of the stone company and rip someone a new one.)

So...yay for my GC. Boo for another week without my finished kitchen. But...I'd rather have it done RIGHT than fast.

No, that still looks like your stone guys are bozos. I'm sorry. It's nice to hear your GC is going to fight the battle. (Hope his little GS is doing well.)

Having your counters done correctly is worth a little extra time. Those errors would annoy the bejeezus out of me every time I looked at them if not corrected.

We normally make up our own grout, with a mixture of (1) 94 # bg. of white portland, 14 -15 shovels of mason sand and color from the Cast Stone manufacturer. This allows us to match the grout color to the stone. You can use a SMS grout color that comes in a 25# bgs. as provided by the tile supplier, or Home Depot., and pick the color you like; or have your designer pick it out for you. We always make up a batch of color and allow it to dry, as it is considerably lighter when it dries than when it is wet. If your tile is uneven where it meets the bottom of the stone, you will need a 3/8" grout jt. in order to lay the travertine level. You can lay a 1/4" th. grout joint, however it is more difficult to install. Most stone or brick is tuck pointed after it is used for coping. Tuck pointing allows for the grout to be pushed into the joint and leave a nice tight finish, and eliminate any voids. One little trick that you can try that will give you a little more time, and make the grout, either by hand or premixed bagged, is to add a tiny bit of KARO syrup. This makes the grout more flowable, and allows more time to work the grout. As soon as you add the KARO syrup to the grout, you will notice a creamer consistency.. A lot of the travertine paver( 1-1/4" thick) is sand set here in Florida. A couple of reasons. Eliminate the expense of forming, pouring and paying for concrete, which could crack and causes a transfer crack(s) to anything placed on top of it. If you place 4" crushed concrete(which is recycled concrete) instead, it is considerably less costly. Place a 1" leveling course of screening sand.( In Florida it is made from crushed limestone), then place the travertine paver on that. The perimeter will be mud set, so as to secure the border. If at some point you decide to add to the deck, you just need to repeat the process and it will not look like an add on. NO CRACKS EVER on your sand set pool deck. They do make a special polymer sand to place between the joints of the travertine pavers. I prefer tumbled travertine pavers as opposed to the chiseled edge. On the other sidde of your question, most tile used in backsplashes is 1/4" or 3/8" thick, plus you have the thinset behind that. You can probably allow 3/8-1/2" for your splash, but I agree that 1/4" variations are probably more than norm that unusual. Hope you love your marble. I thought I was going to have to tell you that I had the first stain on my marble, but I think they were actually on the sealer. They came right off with some cleaner add I will reseal the counters soon -- it's about time anyway. I think you are more likely to love them for several years and convince someone else seeing them in a used state that marble isn't so scary that to lose a sale. Worst case, someone wants to replace the counters -- or get Dry Treat applied. ;-) For now, they are yours to enjoy. I like your slabs. The speak to me -- kind of like mine did. Mine had dark lines and squiggles against a background that reminded me of da Vinci sketches on old paper. My son has done reports on da Vinci for school and we have enjoyed talking about his incredible visions and ideas -- and laughed about the line in "Ever After" where da Vinci takes a locked door off the hings and tells them that he shall forever be remembered as the man who opened a door. I think that set me up to love my slab, but yours has a wispy quality that is unusual and I like that too. Enjoy your counters, and if you have any concerns 3 years from now -- well, no certainty that I'll still be here or have the same email address, but I'd be happy to help you get them ready for a resale over a cup of coffee and talk about what your next counters will be (these are it for me -- DH says he's going out of here in a box -- LOL) Love your marble!

The radiation (radiant heat in the infrared) spreads out like light (because it is light), but this only falls as 1/R^2 when it is emitted from a point source. Other shapes only approach this at a significant distance. There are whole pages of thermal transfer functions applicable to one shape transferring heat by radiation to another nearby shape. But I get your intent. The heat flux density is higher closer to the gas flame, due both to more concentrated radiation, and to convection from the more concentrated hot gas impingement onto the shielding material. If the shielding material were highly conductive -- e.g., thick copper instead of thin stainless steel with an air gap behind it -- the thermal conductivity (heat spreading) could in principle be sufficiently high that, assuming a large enough surface with only some of it heated, it could conduct and then reradiate or convect back into the air the heat input such that all parts of the slab remained below the critical temperature. A heat pipe like architecture could also be imagined performing this function with less copper employed. The GE backspash, however, is the more practical approach.

@live_wire_oak and @weedmeister thanks for the tip. Looks like the Costco installer was an amateur. I asked him the exact same question and he mentioned the grates will be aligned and not the top of the stove. He also never checked the level. I guess I will call them and ask if they can send someone more knowledgeable over. For the back it says 1inch gap is enough but who knows, looks like no one knows what they are doing anymore. Also, I am hoping that once I install the microwave on top the vent will be pretty good and quickly remove any heat. @wacokid yeah I wish I never asked the question about cooktop + wall oven below the cooktop (instead of raised in the wall) on Houzz. After hearing it is not a popular combo in the US, I decided to demolish my current setup and change. Big mistake! Thanks for the filler options @Shannon_WI.

GC's grandson is doing GREAT. He gets to go back to school next week.

And we'd already decided to delay the range. One of the reasons I chose this GC is he has a reputation for taking mid-range (for our area) renos as seriously as high-end. If we'd chosen different finishes we'd have kept to our initial 25K budget. When we went with the Caeserstone and higher-end appliances...well it's going to be closer to 35K. Which isn't COMPLETELY out of bounds. (The Husband set a 25K budget so we'd stay under 35K.) Our GC was the only GC of the five we interviewed who said "Of COURSE you can do a kitchen for 25K. It will all depend on finishes and appliances." Everyone else said some version of "25K is too small a budget."

(We had a 5K "uh oh" fund set aside for unforeseen problems prompted by remodeling in an older home...that turned out to be unnecessary.)

Well--25K WAS too small a budget--but only because DH fell in love with a class C Caeserstone, (I was actually pusihing for laminate--appropriate to the 1966 house, and very functional) and $35/sq Jasba Lavita tile, and the racks and looks of Electrolux Ikon gas range. ;^) And when we realized that a Miele DW was only $200 more than the kitchenaid...well... a couple of hundred here, a couple of hundred there...

(I found all the deals...got our oak floors, INSTALLED, for $1600. And found great pendants for over the bar on Etsy--three for $350. And they will be stunners!) Maybe I'll straighten up and take pictures today...so y'all can see the general effect...mid-stalled-reno.

I showed the pick to my designer and if you can't get the counter replaced you could use 1/2" quarter round over the 1/4" gap and only tile up from that in the area you were originally planning. The little notch is more problematic - the trim to fill in the space would need to extend all the way from the ceiling to the floor.
