Sink Grids ... coated or stainless steel

I have a choice of a coated stainless steel grid or a plain stainless steel grid (Franke sink). I'm concerned about the coated since I think a hot pot might melt the coating ....

Any suggestions? Anyone with experience with the coated model?

Go with the stainless grid.

We have both kinds of grids (2 sinks); I would love to have a plain stainless steel grid instead of the coated one, but it's not available. The grid that is coated already has a spot where rust is showing, so it's obviously not stainless steel underneath. A hot pan will definitely melt the coating.

SS--all the coated ones we'd ever had rusted. The SS ones have been much better.

Most SS sinks come in 2 gauges: 18 g and 16 g. The lower the gauge the heavier duty the sink. Nothing wrong with an 18 gauge. I have one in my laundry room. But for the kitchen I would go with a 16 gauge. Then look to see if you want a classic sink with curved sides or a more modern 0 radius sink with 90 degree corners. Top of the line brands are Julien (handmade in Canada) and Franke. Juliens run around $1200 and are excellent and have some semi-custom sizes. I had a big deep one in our apartment and loved it. An 18 gauge sink for $1000 really should have gold inlay and some semi-precious stones on the corners. But fortunately, like faucets, there are many brands good 16 gauge sinks at very reasonable prices.

I don't have a ss sink-mine's silgranit. However, I now believe that no matter what material your sink is made of, you can't go wrong with a sink grid!!! Not only does it protect the bottom of your sink but it looks nice too. It's easy to keep clean-I just wipe it down every night when I wipe down my sink. Or I just fill the sink up with a few inches of soapy water and use a little brush to clean in between the squares like ccoombs 1 said.

yes, i know. stainless. there's a few on ebay for just under $85 in biscuit. i can't do it though... the stainless is also coated but i just know the biscuit or white would look to plastic-y ...to me anyway. i was just hoping someone would say, oh, yes, get the biscuit it's perfect and you don't need to spend any more crazy money so go for it. i guess we all want the stainless which is why the biscuit is on ebay. the stainless NEVER shows up at a bargain price!

Thanks starcraft. Quite some time ago, I bookmarked your 31 kitchen design rules. Your website is really helpful! A Kohler cast-iron sink was my first choice. I happened to see a used Kohler sink for sale at a great price, it had classic scuff marks as though from a pan. I bought it figuring that elbow grease and and the kohler recommended cleaner and bon ami would do the trick. While it looked better overall, no marks came out. I then tried every cleaner I had, nothing removed them...I finally gave the sink to habitat for humanity....I was really surprised that I couldn't get the marks out....which is why I am looking for a sink now and considering stainless steel. Do you know if Kohler had a couple years of really bad finishes? (Government regulations can really mess up a manufacturer in the short term) How do you wax a sink - by hand or with a machine using different types of buffing pads?

I have both and wish the coated one was "naked" stainless steel! The coated one is somewhat stained. I don't place hot pots/pans on it in fear that it will melt. I'm even careful about pouring boiling water on it! (I aim for the "hole" over the drain.)

yep..... I hate our coated ones and now that we're remodeling look forward to new ones without coating to avoid the rust stain.
