Here's a couple options. Pull the drywall put 1/2" ply to line the opening and it's now 28 1/2". Pull the cabs 4" forward with very usefull added counter space. Do the same recess and add a 2x4 and 1/2" drywall run the length of the wall to the left as needed to bring that section forward. Build the end panel you have to the right of the frig into an 8" end wall. Rotate the frig on an angle so the left side meets the counter depth pulled out to 26" and the rear right corner is recessed in the new wall. The left side trim panel can run straight back on that side. Add up the costs and see how it compares with this $5700 Liebherr FD. Here is a link that might be useful: Liebherr 36

The OP has said they are going to recess the refrigerator into the back wall/room, so they already have plans for dealing with the increased depth of the refrigerator carcass/box. From what I can tell, it's the doors that are bothering them...but, unless they get a fully-integrated, built-in ($$$) that's designed to have the doors flush w/the surrounding cabinets, they cannot do it b/c the doors have to be free to swing open. Vermonter...If you cannot recess the refrigerator into a room behind the refrigerator as well (b/c a wall will only gain you approx 3-1/2"), then either getting 27" deep base (or tall) cabinets or pulling them out from the wall approx 2" to 3" would be needed (to match the 28" depth or so...if it's important to you that the ref carcass be flush w/the surrounding cabinets/counter (The amount to be pulled out from the wall depends on the depth of the carcass. Also, since the refrigerator is next to a counter, remember the counter will extend approx 1-1/2" beyond the cabinets so the door will need to stick out beyond the counter as well.) Regardless, the doors will still have to stick out past the surrounding cabinets & counters... I would have liked to have had a full-depth refrigerator and recessed it into the back wall. However, our refrigerator is on an exterior wall, so recessing was not an option. We do have a second refrigerator in the basement, so we're OK with refrigerated space. I found that a 36" cabinet-depth refrigerator wasn't enough while our kids were growing up (two kids). I suspect, however, that once we're empty nesters the one refrigerator will be enough. Then we'll probably just use the second refrigerator during holidays and, possibly, the summer for drinks (it will be off other times). [We generally shop just once every week or two b/c of the distance to a decent supermarket and b/c we both work full time outside the home and wanted to minimize our "away" time, so we'd stock up - hence the need for more refrigerated space!]

Fuzzy, it is true that you can get a counter depth fridge that is 24 cu ft. but since the volume is a product of height, width and depth, if you reduce depth you must increase height and width to keep the same volume. For example, a 36" wide Miele counter depth fridge is 80" tall, costing you the storage you'd have above a standard height fridge, but still has only 18.9 cu ft of storage. To get more volume, you have to go wider, sacrificing cabinets on the sides of the fridge. If you recess a full-depth fridge, you can get the volume without giving up cabinet space. If your kitchen is very large and there aren't space constraints, then it's not an issue.
