are any of you putting up a small tree this year?

We have a large bay window and a great tree that fills the entire bay. But...it takes 1-2 days to put it up and decorate and then again to take down. As we are traveling to the children this year, I decided to put up a small tree. Doesn't seem quite the same, but sure was a lot easier!

Not sure how successful I was, but I tried to pull in a vintage look. Couldn't find just the right table to put the tree on, so used the wagon bench that usually sits in the bay. Really made it easy, as I didn't have find a new home for it for the holidays. Added an ivory table cloth and then decided to bring in toys, adding the child's rocking chair and rocking horse to help with the look.

Anyone else want to share their small trees?

That's so pretty!

We are having a regular sized tree (7-8 feet) but it's on the skinny side, so it isn't overwhelming in our smallish rooms.

Wish I was wee enough to sit and rock in that rocker with the doll on my lap.

MaryLu, how cute! I love the rocking horse and child's chair. It seems like a lot of us are foregoing the big trees this year.

LOL Eden, Sometimes I feel bad about buying cut trees, but as Jen pointed out, these trees are grown for that purpose. I've never owned an artifial tree, well, except for 4 little 2'er's I set up to brighten the LR. There's something about a live tree w/its piney scent. I never knew trees were sprayed w/insecticides until reading this post..now I know why I broke out when handling the last few trees we purchased..I am allergic to most pesticides. and the smell stinks like Raid. Someone mentioned the movie, Christmas Vacation, and said something about they were looking for bugs..actually it was a squirrel living in the tree..lol..remember the family was running around the house while this squirrel hung on Chevy's back..LOL.. Also, as Foxy mentioned about beef..I feel the same way..not only w/beef, but pork, chicken, and yes, even eggs..When I eat I try not thinking about where that steak or 1/4 pounder came from. It is sad..but what do we do? I can't stand lettuce..don't even use in salads. Yuck. So, the question is, what do we do? Stop buy leather shoes, purses, coats..use plastic doors and walls? I woulnd't wear a mink coat now, but heck, who could afford one anyway..lol..Where do we draw the line? Toni

cheryl, Yeah, and look at those average temperatures, combined with a more intense sun due to a lower sun angle. Also note that it is very common for July/August to be nearly rainless, or occur on one or two days for this location. For example I got 5.25" here last July.......... all on one day. Was almost 8 weeks before I got significant rain again, and it had been almost a month before the 5.25". Averages don't tell the whole story. Also click the link below for a more complete story of the averages. Note the 90 average high for weeks in July/August, and the very low "average" daily precipitation, but when it does rain it's often heavy, raising the "average". Plus that does not preclude that last summer was VERY hot and VERY dry, and my paperbark did fabulously in FULL sun which is what I am basing my POV on. I was dryer than the Fayetteville reporting station last summer. I've never heard of tree sweating, but I accidentally experienced it first had this last week! I bought 4 Golden Raintrees from a highly reputable seller on Ebay who has tons of all positive feedback. I received the 4 tree "whips", and they all had terrific root systems, but it was odd for me to be planting these sticks. So this was in early March, and up to last week, there was NO activity from these trees at all. I ever so gently checked them for green underneath and they all had bright lime green going on. I kept saying to my husband do you see anything happening to these trees or is it just me, but he didn't see anything either. Well, flash forward to this last week. We had 4 days in a row of temps in the high 40's to low 50's and overnight lows as low as 19 and as high as 30. Every day we were going to be having frosts and/or freezes. (One day there was a very HEAVY frost). I said there is no way we are going out every day to uncover them for a few hours and then go out and cover them back up; that's just ridiculous! See, we had spent the last month going out and covering our trees with 2 heavy blankets each, and then going out and uncovering them. Anyway, so we left them covered up for 4, maybe 5 days, as I sit here I can't remember, but I know it was at least 4. Anyway, we uncovered the trees the day before yesterday and guess what? All the Golden Raintrees had buds that were beginning to swell! I said to my husband what in the world caused them to wake up? They were each covered up in 2 heavy fleece blankets for several days, they never saw the sun. I guess now I know what happened.

I'm so sorry your job has become such a nightmare. It's hard when something that is going to be a great improvement in your home becomes such a trial to get through. I'm with you in spirit - we started what was allegedly a four-month job on December 2, 2013. We knew at the time that six months was more realistic, but we would have the space back by July 4th, no problem. It's one year later and we're still not done (should be about two weeks out). We're close enough now that friends come by to look at the kitchen and say "oh, you're going to love cooking here" and, like OOTM Mom, I feel no pleasure or joy or anticipation, just "whatever, yeah." Every day is a day closer to finished. Hang on.

homemaker and deborahnj, thank you. I just wasn't sure how successful I was in bringing it together. In my mind I knew what I wanted to do, but wasn't sure it came across that way. We have collected many children's items for our home, as it was orginally a school. Hardest part was deciding what to put in the bay without cluttering it up too much.

I must admit that I do miss the large tree and I am not sure what DH will say when he sees that I did not put up the large tree. It is so beautiful when decorated, but I just did not feel up to all the hassle this year.

OMY Gosh Your Effort shows - what a Tree you have. I love love it. Its all a glow and of true beauty.

I have a little tree but its no where near - what you have created.

I am in the middle of a renovation and have no plans for a tree at all - even my little tree from last year.

Your tree looks pretty with all the toys. I think it is great that you put up a little tree when you don't feel like going big. If I wasn't going to be home and my kids were older I probably would do the same thing.

I remember when my Mom went to a smaller tree. She loved it because it wasn't such a overwhelming chore anymore.

There was a piece on the news tonight that many families are going with smaller trees this year. We'll be doing a smaller tree but that's because we need to have one up off the ground away from puppies.

You made a nice vignette, the whole thing is very warm and attractive. One suggestion: do you have anything, perhaps a second urn placed upside down, to put under the tree to elevate it up? I think it would look better if all of the branches were above the back of the bench.

I put up four trees this year. Three are small.

I put up five trees and two are small.
This one is in the DR--it's a trash treasure. DH picked it up off the curb.

This one is in the basement. Color of lights really looks funky in the pic.
