What width wood floors would you do?

I have posted a message on the house building forum and have gotten some responses (thanks to those who did respond). I would like to ask over here too b/c you are into decorating/design. I am building a new house. It is a traditional Colonial. It will have a few formal rooms, but won't be over the top formal. We will have hardwoods throughout the first floor (kitchen included). Kitchen cabinets, all other cabinets and all trim will be white. In my current house, I have what I would call regular hardwood floors. They are oak and are 2.25 inches wide (I think). I am considering going a bit wider in my new house (probably 3.25 or so). What do you think? They will also be oak and I plan to stain them a dark brown (not REALLY dark, but rich). Is this a trendy look? Traditional? Country? I don't really know, so any thoughts would be appreciated (or PICTURES!). THANKS!
