uh oh rug mistake need advice

Hi everybody, hope you're all enjoying the holidays! I'm in a rug nightmare and I hope someone can give me advice. Ill refresh your memory - I bought and had end-capped a beautiful runner for my foyer. The foyer is longish and narrowish 13 x 5 and 1/2. I wanted to put something on the tile floor to help deaden sound and to warm up the entry way. The "runner turned area rug" arrived a few days ago, and I don't like it in the hallway, although I still really like the rug, the colors and the feel of it. The length of it makes the hall seem even longer and looks kind of weird to me. Now I did try putting down paper in the hallway to simulate how a rug of that size would look before I placed my order, but I just don't like the way it looks. It's not returnable. Can a rug be lengthened? If I could have that done I would use it on my stairway. It looks great there but is too short. The other alternative would be cut it so that it doesn't start at the door and run the full length of the foyer. Right now it starts at the front door and ends at the end of the last tile in the foyer. Do you think it would look better if it just covered the middle portion of the hall? Was the mistake using a long rug in a long hall? I"m so confused. But my first choice right now would be to have a piece added on and use if for a stair runner. Is that possible? I've been off the board for awhile, so I'm not familar with the rug you purchased. Can you post a pic? I've shortened many rugs, so that is probably doable. Lengthening is another story unless it's carpeting.

Your foyer is much shorter in length than our hallway. With the floor bare, it looked like a bowling lane.

This runner really helped deaden the noise and it visually shortened the length of the hallway.

How wide is your "runner"? If it's too wide to look like a runner then that may be your problem.

Can you post a picture?

I am with GG48. Fungi around plants are to be appreciated rather than feared. The organic material simply breeds bacteria, fungi and other critters. There are good and bad of everything. The good guys eat either decaying matter or other "bugs". The bad guys eat plants. Using organic matter results in a high population of non harmful worms, bacteria, fungi etc. This population helps to naturally control the plant pathogenic version. Fungi in particular are mean, territorial, violent organisms. They do not take kindly to competition and will go to war over territory. Even the various 'good' fungi will go to war where their territory overlaps with other good fungi. What will not happen is a pathogenic fungi spore falls into the middle of this and be able to grow. It will become food.

Tym, As Pirate Girl said, you're too concerned about watering these. They'll be fine. They are drawing resources from their lower leaves in order to live, but this takes months. As the resources are depleted, the lower leaves dry up. You can remove or not. This is a natural process, especially when they're in growth - as new growth appears, old growth dies. As you note, until there are roots there is no reason to water them. The only condition where you would is one you can't supply right now - lots of sun and warmth, a broad expanse of sidewalk or a heating mat, and the plant sitting in pure pumice in a pot that will warm easily. Until you have those conditions when an Aloe is rootless, watering is fruitless - or rather it's worse than fruitless, because it will kill the plant. Just be kickin' it with the Aloe - stand it up in a nice sturdy vase/container (a 155mm shell casing works great), or leave it potted in dry soil, and spritz as needed. It will be fine until growing time. I hope this has convinced you, because frankly I'm out of words.

I think that bat plants need a lot more "bright" light that people are led to believe. They can tolerate very bright light (not direct sun) but thrive in a place that gets good filtered or dappled light and high air movement. I tried one in the house years ago when they were still very expensive (Before they started showing up at Walmart and other box stores). There was one at our local independent nursery for $35 and I had 15 "bonus bucks" saved up from previous purchases so I got it for $20. It was gorgeous, not a spot on it, it had been living in their greenhouse for quite a while. I put it indoors in my house and it was either dead (or dormant...I didn't know back then that they could go dormant) within less than a month. I have both black and white ones in my greenhouse now and they do great. The white ones never go dormant, but the black ones will sometimes lose a few leaves and try to when the light changes with the shortening days in winter. The black ones even set seeds and they dropped and germinated without my knowledge and started 2 entire new stands of plants!

Good job on the fireplace it looks GREAT moved down.... and no one but you will ever know it's not perfect. It fits the wall much better. Gorgeous actually. But more important is that it was IMPORTANT enough to both of you to have it lowered. That's all that matters. As far as the granite....Both edges, the one you wanted and the one they're forcing on you, look to me too substantial for the edging you have on the rest of your granite (again it's a personal thing). One suggestion... have you asked them about other edging styles? One that might satisfy you but less chance of breaking the piece if changed? Several people here have talked about detailed granite edges. I had one in my other home and agree it's a pain to keep clean (toothbrushes helped). But you mentioned the reason they don't want to give you the right one is it probably will destroy the piece. And like you said they have no more pieces in stock. If they cut and break it then have to get another piece it could take several weeks (or months) for the piece to be shipped and fitted. And even then it might not exactly match the pieces already installed. Are you willing to wait for that to move into your home? Or is it such a personal thing that it will truly drive you crazy for years to come if you leave it like it is now? If that is the case rather than the granite place just not getting it right then you owe it to yourself to not give in on this one either. Or give up on the $600. While we were building 3 other couples divorced over their builds. In each instance it was in the final phase of the build when things were getting ripped out over and over to meet one idea of perfection over the other's. I'm not even saying that applies to you... in the least... so please do not take it as such....all I'm saying is sometimes it's more stressful holding on to an idea than it's worth. On my home DH and GC both wanted to do a poplar ceiling painted white in my "rustic" kitchen. I fought tooth and nail over that one and won. I've never regretted it for one minute. You have to decide what to fight for and what to give up. Good luck.

Depending on the size of the rug and the pattern, I'd cut it into 3 or 4 equal pieces, finish the ends of each piece (of course), and then put the pieces in the hallway, going the other way, as 3 or 4 separate little rugs, IYKWIM. That may help to visually shorten the hallway more than one long rug would.

Just an idea.

Live with it for a while. It may be just right, but merely something you are not accustomed to seeing.

If you do decide to turn it into a stair runner, it may not be necessary to lengthen it. A good installer might be able to end it where a riser meets a tread, and then start the new piece abutted to that.

I agree with the three pieces idea from Uxorial...but to avoid a static, "off the rack" feeling, make the center piece longer, and the two on the end the same length.... I'd use a three-five-three proportion, and then jigger it to make the pattern end in the same part of the repeat at all six ends.
What do you think? (Am I explaining clearly what I mean?)

If you like it on your stairway, then that's where it should be. Just buy more and have it installed just as bbstx suggests. You will need to order enough to allow for piecing it together. It can appear to be seamless if the pattern is matched correctly. The only problem could be some variation in color because the two pieces were bought separately. I'd love to see photos and hope you post some when you finish whatever you do.

I have the feeling you might be happier if the rug left some bare area of flooring at both ends. I can envision what you're talking about and for a foyer I think it will look much better if the rug doesn't run all the way from the front door to the end of the foyer. I would definitely leave at least a foot if not more of flooring between the foyer and whatever area comes next. Perhaps you could have a pretty inside floor mat at the door and then have the carpet start about a foot from that. This would really help to break up the foyer area.

Thanks so much for all the ideas. I think I would like to try using it for the stairs. Now, I bought it online; how do I find someone to install a rug that I didn't buy from his store? Or for that matter if I wanted to have it cut and finished who would do that for me if I didn't buy from them? Thanks all, i'll check back in after New Year's day.

Most carpet and tile people in our area are subcontractors, i.e., they will work for money from anyone. Find someone who does flooring work, ask them if they will do it for you. That should not be a problem. We have a little local newspaper thingie that runs ads selling labor, wanting to sell labor, selling furniture, similar to a Craig's list but hard copy.
